Sick after shots My little 12 week old Abbey got her second set of shots this morning and began vomiting about an hour after. She did eat more than she usually does this morning (I shouldn't have let her do that knowing she was getting her vaccines). She vomited 3 times and then when she voided, her urine was bright orange! So, vet said bring her right in and to leave her so she could be watched. I just hate it! Our vet seemed to do everything right, too. He said because she was so tiny (29 ounces)and a Yorkie, he didn't want to give her all her shots at once, so he is spacing them out over a couple of months. He also said that way, if she were to have a reaction, he would know exactly which vaccine was causing the problem. He is also using newer vaccines made just for toy dogs. Yet, she is still sick. My 'nurse' self is saying she is going to be just fine, but my 'mommy' self is really worried. I am not sure if it is because she over ate or from the vaccine..or a combination of both. Please say a prayer for her. Thanks so much Ellie

I will keep your tiny in my prayers and for your strength as well. She should be fine. Being at the vets she seems to be in good hands.

I am sure everyting will be OK. I have my little guy, 16 weeks in the same boat. He got his shots yesterday PM. This AM he was sick. Went to the vet and he said keep and eye on him all day. Got home, he vomited, went back to vet, he is spending the night. Good luck. Lisa

| Ellie - It really sounds like your vet is very experienced with toy dogs and I am very impressed on how he is spacing out the vaccines and that he told you to immediately bring her in. Please keep us updated on how she is doing. I am very interested by your comment regarding "vaccines just for toy dogs" as I have never heard of this before. Would you be so kind as to let me know the name and manufacturer of these. I do Yorkie Rescue and over vaccination has concerned me so if there is something that could alleviated this I would be thrilled. I really would like to research this.

Abbey is home Thank you everyone for your words of hope and support. The vet said she had an inflammatory reaction at the injection site and he thinks this then caused her to vomit. He gave her fluids, phenergan and an anti inflammatory med. She took fluids and ate a little and kept it all down. She also voided. I thought her urine still looked a little darker than usual but he said it was fine. She is still a little lethargic and yelped at times when I was holding her. I am going to keep her in her crate the rest of the night. (she gets a little rambunctious when playing with the dog and cat). I looked on my statement to see if it gave the name of the vaccine that was for toys...the vet actually said "it is designed specifically for these little guys under 5 pounds", rather than that it was made for toys. He told me the manufacturer but I don't recall the name. It shows on my bill as distemper/parvo for puppies. I will try to remember to ask him when I see him again and will post here. I sure hope this is the last of unplanned visits to the vet. Thanks again to everyone. Ellie

Amber, I hope your babies will do fine. It sounds like your vet is doing what mine is doing...spacing the shots out. He gave Abbey only the distemper/parvo for puppies under 5 pounds (he mentioned why that was given that way, but I don't recall what he said exactly. He then named the other vaccines she would need and said he was only going to give one at a time...and one of them he wasn't going to give until she weighed well over 2 pounds even though by age, she should be getting it sooner. I guess I should have been paying closer attention, but honestly never gave a reaction much thought. (Any reactions my other dogs have had have been fairly mild and she had no reaction to the first one...strange) She also was given another de worming pill. I really hope all goes well. Let us know Ellie

Sick after shots I'm so sorry your baby had this problem. My vet also spaced the shots for both of my pups, Bogey 17mo. and Gabey 13mo. If you elect to have the Lyme shot be prepared for that to possibly be the roughest shot given. We live in the woods and have deer all around the property and there is a great deal of Lyme's disease here in Maryland. Therefore, we decided to have both dogs vaccinated. During the first series of shots there are two Lyme shots given a few weeks apart and then a booster each year after. Because Bogey was uncomfortable after the initial shot the vet gave him a small dose of pain killer and advised administering another dose one hour before the second shot. I did the same this year for the booster and it did seem to minimize the reaction in comparison to last year but he was still feverish during the night and had aches and pains, even in his chest for up to 72 hours after the shot. (The vaccine was given in the hip.) I am not looking forward to Gabey having his booster in November.
