| Toby has Luxated Patellas. Toby was favoring his right leg this morning so I took him to a 24 hr emergency vet that said he has a stage 3 LP (right leg) stage 2LP (left leg) I have VPI's BEST coverage plan but Luxated Patella corrective surgery is one of only a few things NOT covered.I've got the money to pay out of pocket so that's O.K. but was wondering if anyone knows the average cost of this surgery per leg.The stage 2 one is not of immediate concern but If I can I may go ahead and get both fixed. I am taking him to his primary vet tomorrow for a second opinion but I'm sure the emergency vets diagnosis is correct.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | What I'd do is ask for a referral to a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. That is the only type of doc I'd let operate on my pups for osteo conditions. Keep us posted. And there are lots of threads here about LP, and surgery, and successful outcomes too!

| I'm sorry. LP really sucks. Callie's surgery on her knee and her ACL was around 2,500 I think. I would make sure you get an orthopedic surgeons opinion and to do the surgery.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Hi Dennis ~ I'm so sorry to hear about Toby's dx; however, as others have advised, I would definitely get a second opinion from a reputable ortho surgeon. My Abi has stage 3 LP in both knees (confirmed by her vet and a reputable ortho surgeon). We were so blessed to have been sent to this surgeon, who thought of the dog...not $$$$. She said that she treats the condition individually. Some dogs live comfortably with stage 3 for years, never needing surgery. Others, have only a stage 1, and she's gone through with the procedure, because the dog is in pain almost daily, and it interferes with quality of life. We watch Abi for signs of stress, as advised by the surgeon. Her consult was last September, and she's had only two episodes where one knee got stuck; but I was able to gently rub it out. Otherwise, she runs and plays like nothing is wrong; so it is not interfering with her life quality at this time. I hope you find a good surgeon for a consult. Praying for Toby...

| Thanks for the advice everyone. Toby is seeing a highly recommended ortho surgeon Friday 7/13.If he decides he needs surgery we'll do it right then. Maybe he won't need surgery but we'll see. I'll keep everyone posted.

| I'm sorry to hear about Toby. With Grades 2 and 3, you may be able to just crate rest him with the use of medications rather than go right to surgery. My dog had both knees at Grade 4 as a pup, and one leg went lame so she had surgery at age 2. The other leg which is a grade 4 has never needed surgery as she has never gone lame. She's now 12 so they can do very well post surgery and also without surgery if rested and medicated (as long as they don't go lame). I'm glad you are going to a boarded orthopedic surgeon - this is very important in my opinion. Hope you get a good report!

| Hi Dennis, I just found this post. My dog is going in for surgery with Dr. Wagner for the same issue. How did your dog do with the surgery? Thanks! |

| Our dog Zach was diagnosed with Luxated Patelles this past Saturday. He's 3 1/2 years old. We had no idea. He never showed any signs. She told us to keep an eye on him and if he startes favoring the leg we should call her. So far so good. She also said we have to keep his weight down because he's 12 1/2 pounds but not a drop of fat on him. He is tall and has ballet legs. |

| Our little Maggie has grade 3 LP in both back legs. We didn't know about it until 2 years ago when she and our other yorkie Ginger got into a fight. Maggie being much smaller than Ginger didn't fare so well. She started crying and wouldn't put her right back leg down. We thought she just sprained it but after 2 days of not putting her leg down we took her to the vet. He told us about the LP. He gave her an injection, gave us some meds to take home, and told us to crate rest her. He said the only way to fix LP is with surgery, but he also said we could see how she does and if it doesn't become a chronic problem we could wait and see how she does going forward if we didn't want to do the surgery right away. After the meds and crate rest, she hasn't had any issues since. I can feel her knee popping and moving when drying her off when she is wet, but it doesn't bother her. Unless it gets to bothering her a lot, we are going to hold off on doing any surgery. I'm sorry your baby has LP. I hope it doesn't bother a lot, but if so then surgery will be necessary. It sounds to me like surgery by an ortho surgeon is around $2000 per leg. Good luck!
