| So maybe this is the cause of her diarrhea and not the Metacam.

| Wait....the pharmacist said that antibiotics would cause this? Sounds confusing to me. It is a bacteria and it sounds to me like an antibiotic would be given to get rid of it? Am I missing something here?

I'm wondering too. One page suggested antibiotics could be the cause, another suggests antibiotics as the remedy?

| It is a bacteria so an antibiotic would be needed. I did not see the one that suggested the antibiotic caused it, but it might be the use of an antibiotic that was not for gram negative or was not given the right length of time and the bacteria went bonkers. I will have to go find that post.

| not sure but this all started in february after the metacam and metacam is known for damaging the intestinal walls if mixed with steroids so i think her intestines are jacked up and then i stopped the probiotics, soaked her kibble, went basic as it took 30 days of soaked food for her to stop vomitting her food up after the metacam. Then she developed a staph infection in May of 2009 probably due to stopping the probiotics possibly but the whole time intermittent diarhea since february, then in july she had a dental but in february of 2009 her blood work, fecal and urine were PERFECT - so this all spun out of control 3 days after that when she hurt her leg and i went to a different vet for digital xray - I have no clue but due to being on temarilp she is susceptible to bacteria issues so i should have never stopped the coconut oil and probiotics as she was perfect for 2 years but when she was vomitting whole kibble up for a month unless soaked I was baffled. I still think her intestines were damaged as nsaids can perforate a human bowel if given with steroidson empty stomach so i do believe it can damage a 7lb dog as well - even dh who is clueless says ever since that drug she has been a mess so had the intestines been damaged who knows if they are not functioning properly how that can cause bacterial issues etc so if something isn't functioning 100% it can allow other things to spin out of control. All i know is my dog had no diarhea issues for 4 1/2 years NEVER and come 2/09 when she hurt her leg she has been a mess and it is very upsetting and frustrating hopefully antibiotics will help the staph and the intestines and she can get back on track again |

| I find it hard to believe that one dose of Metacam would do that...I told you that last night. I would think it would be longer term usage with the pred. I have a feeling it was maybe this all along. I certainly hope it is....it would be wonderful if an antibiotic would fix this problem!!!

| what happens is the antibiotic kills the good bacteria and the bad bacteria so what happens is the bad bacteria this one takes over so it can be a vicious cycle for a dog on immune suppressant drugs like dd who is on temarilp - so the antibiotics will kill again the good and bad again and i am going to load her up with probiotics again along with it and hopefully she will get balanced out again. This why antibiotics are tricky as it can be a double edge sword for a dog with a suppressed immune system like dogs with allergies like dd has as you try to suppress the immune system as it is hyperactive with allergies then you open the door for bacterial issues as the immune system cannot fight off bad bacterias as it is suppressed this is why she is such a difficult case and she has hypothyroid as well which is an auto immune disease so she is on drugs for her thyroid - NOW YA KNOW MY NIGHTMARE oh and throw in the mvd liver issue so she cannot process meds well you have a double whamy |

He has had antibiotics many times for skin infections .. staph which is very common for them to get. It is not the same staph that people get and easily clears up with an antibiotic. He does not have MVD. But, I have no problems with antibiotics and he has never gotten diarrhea except for a couple of bouts of pancreatitis.
