| Teddy had a seizure! My 9-month old puppy Teddy had a seizure. My husband had taken him to the vet this evening for a nail trim. Apparently, he was not unusually stressed during the nail trim but when my husband went to leave, he noticed something wrong with Teddy's leg - it was trembling and wobbly and then it progressed to his whole body. They rushed him in the back and gave him valium and said he was having a seizure. I had them run blood work in house all of which was normal. Teddy is back home but he is a little loopy from the valium. We are keeping him away from the other dogs and he is quiet in his crate. I'm very upset about this and don't know what my next steps should be. Do I pursue a cause, or is this a wait-and-see type of issue? I could take him to specialists but am not sure that it would produce anything. Any advice or thoughts are welcomed. Thanks.

| oh no! I'm so sorry. Wish I could give you some advice but I just don't know what to tell you. Did the vet say just to keep an eye on him? Are they going to run blood work or anything? |

| yeah they ran the bloodwork -- it was all normal. He had normal liver and kidney functions and his blood sugar was normal. We are keeping him quiet now at home, and hopefully he will be ok. We are 20 minutes away from a 24-hr vet hospital in case but hopefully we will not need to go.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Oh that must have been scary. Since the blood work was normal maybe just keeping an eye on him. If he has any more or other symptoms I would have a Bile Acid test done and pursue it further. Hope he feels better soon.

| I would watch him to see if he has any more seizures. If so, I would think about the bile acid test. I sent you a pm explaining what we did with Harley when he was having his seizures. (((((Hugs))))) |

Actually a liver problem won't show up in a regular blood screening until there is significant damage to his liver. I would have him bile acid tested to be on the safe side and the results of that will determine if more testing is required. Yorkies are 36 times more likely have liver shunt than any other breed and one of the biggest symptoms is seizures. You can learn more information here. Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Seizures are not a disease...they are a symptom of an underlying cause. Prayers for Teddy.

| Has he had any medical problems before? Personally, I would pursue it, but maybe that's just me. IMO, dogs don't seize without good reason. And liver functioning issues do not always show up on a blood panel.

| No, he has not had any other medical problems. He has been just fine all along. He has a slight head shake/bob that my dog trainer noted during puppy class and she wondered if it was a neurological issue. My vet did not think it was anything of concern. Teddy was neutered and was just fine. His blood work was all completely normal. His ALT was under 10 U/L. I know that this is not determinitive of LS but it is a factor. My MVD dog routinely has ALT readings near 200 U/L. She also has symptoms that Teddy does not have. I am familiar with LS because of my MVD dog but I just do not think that is the road I should take now. I am not adverse to running BA but my time and money may be better well spent (at least initially) with a neurologist or other specialist. I am waiting for my vet to call me and will go from there. Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. I am taking them all into consideration.
