The owners need to turn this poor guy over to a rescue to make sure he gets the proper treatment and care before being adopted. | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This is so sad, heartworm is so easy to prevent, and so painful and costly to treat. I get so angry every time I read about someone saying that heartworm medication isn't needed and doctors and drug companies are just trying to rip you off. People recommend "holistic" medications that seem more like "snake oil" treatment, and yet for some reason people want to believe them. Please treat your dogs with a heartworm preventative, and get testing once a year. I agree, it would great if a rescue could take him. I wonder if the owner has tried that option?

When I lived in NJ I always had my dog on heartworm medicine (due to high tick population) but in So. Cal. my vet said he didn't think it was necessary. Said he did not have his dogs on it. Do you feel it is a precaution that all dogs be on it? |

| My Blk Lab, Lucky, got heartworms years ago when we lived in Council Bluffs, IA. He was already on seizure medication but our vet, bless his heart, called the University of NE for information on how to treat him. He had to have 2 treatments. We almost lost him. It was SO hard on him but luckily he was young, in terrific health, and it was caught early on. He did live to a ripe old age of over 12 yrs. I really don't remember the cost - I was just so worried about Lucky making it through the treatment. Bless your heart if you decide to get him. I hope you do. Best Wishes....

| What a cutie. If you can afford it I say get him. I would talk to them and see what has been done... He already had a vet check so perhaps you can go back and get the medication.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh that's great, I hope they realize how important it is to start treatment right away. I'll bet whoever she got this dog from, knew it had heartworm, perhaps some breeder, and it's more cost-effective, not to treat, and just get rid of it.

| Hopefully my email to the craigslist address will get to them. I gave them a link to the rescues/shelters in the area that was on the animal rescue site's shelter challenge. Check it out. It has lists of the rescues/shelters in each state. Validity?? but it's a start.
