Angel's White Blood Cell Count is Very Low We took Angel in to do her heartworm and wellness test last Thursday, and the vet called on Friday to say that her white blood cell count was very low at 2.5. She recommended doing more tests to check the differential. She called today to say that Angel's neutrophil level is very low at 0.5 (norm 3-11). She said it could mean an immunosuppresive disease and recommended we bring Angel in for an exam. We're going tomorrow afternoon. She also mentioned a bone marrow biopsy may be a possibility but it's premature, so they want to examine her first, and we may have to do a urinalysis. Are there questions we should ask? Have any of you experienced this before? Is this common in Yorkies? Angel has sneezed on and off since Saturday and hacked like there is something in her throat. I haven't heard anything today. She did vomit a brown liquid (could be her kibble) on May 9 and vomited bile on May 13 and May 14. She does vomit bile when she doesn't eat a lot. She hasn't been her energetic self since Saturday. She is mostly lying down. My parents watched Angel over the weekend, and my mom said that she was shaking on and off on Sunday. When we took her home, she seemed to only shake when she was on the ground but not on the couch. I don't know if she was cold or not. We have been giving her Nutrical and adding soft food to her kibble to get her to eat as she won't eat her kibble by itself. We're feeding her Wellness whitefish and sweet potato canned and dry food. We have also been giving her water from a water bottle for pets for the past couple of days to make sure she is hydrated. Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, DJ30

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | She's not on any meds, right? Sometimes meds can lower WBCs, but I'm sure your vet would've ruled that out. It really could just be an anomaly, but it could also be what you already mentioned (immunosuppressive dis.); could also be a bone marrow disease, viral, and sometimes, WBCs are low w/ cancer - but I really don't want to alarm you. Is there any way she got into something toxic? The vet may just wnat to recheck WBCs in a while before proceeding to a BM biopsy. I'm sorry your baby is going through this - please keep us updated -- I will keep her in my thoughts.

No, she isn't on meds. My fiance and I are very careful when it comes to her eating things she shouldn't, but I can't say the same for my family. They think she's "just a dog." She's basically an indoor dog, but my parents recently started taking her out for walks on occasion. My sister and parents have ant traps in their homes. My sister removes them before we go over, and my mom has them where Angel can't reach them. Thanks for your response Wylie's Mom. Last edited by DJ30; 05-19-2009 at 06:15 PM.

We took Angel to see the vet and she is fine physically. The vet recommends a urinalysis and wants to put Angel on an antibiotic just in case of an infection she is fighting that we can't see. She said it wouldn't hurt and suggested a derivative of Amoxicillin for 11 days and then to repeat the blood work. If the repeat blood work still shows a low WBC count, then she would recommend a bone marrow biopsy but she doesn't think it would come to that given Angel's young age. They tried to take urine from her bladder but there wasn't any. We'll have to bring in a sample. I'm communicating with the breeder to see what she thinks. The breeder said she could just be getting over something she picked up, and the vet will test and test and she could be fine. We didn't get the antibiotics for now as we don't like to put her on meds unless absolutely necessary. We're thinking about waiting until we get the urinalysis results to decide. We have to keep Angel inside (can't go to parks) until we figure this out. Is there any harm on putting her on antibiotics when we don't know the cause of her low WBC count?

| the amox is fine i pray she is fine after the round of antibiotics.. with that said dont wait to long after to have her rechecked, one of my dogs had cancer at 13 weeks old, it had a mast cell tumor and is the youngest dog that the lab knows of to have that kind of cancer. we did catch it and they cut it all out and she is 3 years old now and cancer free

I took Angel's urine sample in today, and the urinalysis results came back normal. She was prescribed 1/2 tablet of Clavamox 62.5 mg every 12 hours with food for 7 days. Is this dose normal? She weighs a little less than 4 lb.

Did they check for addison's? Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) in Dogs addison's is very hard to detect in dogs. Has your dog been losing weight recently? another thing with the coldness is hypothyroid so has a 6 panel thyroid been done these are both immune disorders so please have them rule these out as these are the first two things i am thinking in what you describe - leaning more to addisons as my friends bull mastiff was just diagnosed with it and my dd has hypothyroid but with wbc and the neos sounds more like addisons and many vets do not detect it soon enough before an addison crisis Last edited by dwerten; 05-22-2009 at 10:05 PM.

No, I don't think they checked for Addison's as I don't see ACTH in the lab report, and no thyroid tests were done. She hasn't been losing weight. I don't know if she was shaking due to coldness or not eating, but she hasn't been shaking since early last week. She has been eating all her meals with the soft food and started acting like herself by the end of last week.

I don't know if this is true but I heard the Wellness Fish is dangerous because of tiny bones. They show it here. Don't know but there was more than one video on it. I hope the little one is OK. It is a pretty serious video and hope there is no truth to it. Please watch it for your baby sake Carol and Jemma Last edited by Jemma; 05-25-2009 at 06:02 AM.

We repeated Angel's CBC on Friday. Her neutrophils are a little higher at 1.7 but are still low. The vet recommends repeating her blood work in 3 weeks before doing invasive testing. She also gave us the option to put Angel back on Clavamox, but we decided not to do that. She is eating better and is acting like her usual energetic self. Hopefully, her neutrophils will be normal next time. Last edited by DJ30; 06-01-2009 at 09:49 PM.
