| My nLucy Yesterday, when my 5 year old grandson bounced onto the bed, Lucy was under the covers and he landed on her. I took her into the vet clinic(they have several different vets) shortly after that, because she was in so much pain she couldn't even walk straight. They xrayed her, but found no breaks or dislocations, but she was in so much pain they gave her a shot of morphine. The vet said she couldn't have anti-inflammatories, because she's taking steroids or something for her recurring staff infection. She was out from 4 PM when she got the morphine until this morning, so I didn't realize she had another problem. This morning she was still walking in circles and I noticed that she wasn't turning her head to the right, not even when I offered her her favorite treat. All she wanted to do was lay in my arms. Her neck and head were the only areas that weren't xrayed yesterday. I took her back to the clinic, but I saw a different vet. She took an xray of the head and neck. When she brought her back to me she, they xray showed no damage to the bones. The vet said she had severe muscle spasms and she had given her another injection. I asked if it was morphine again and she said no that it was an anti-inflammatoy. I told her she wasn't supposed to have that because of the steroids. She just said "Oh". I don't think she even checked to see what else she was taking. If she had brought her back to me before she gave her the injection(as I feel she should have), I would have mentioned it. I don't think the vet should be giving my baby any kind of meds without me knowing. I asked her what to look for if there was a problem and she said Lucy might have a little stomach upset, but there shouldn't be much of a problem since she isn't continuing to take it. It didn't help, anyway, because she's still in a lot of pain. She still can't turn her head to the right, she still walks in circles, she still just lies here and she still cries out in pain if she moves wrong. If she isn't better by morning, do you think I can ask them to give her another shot of morphine? She feels so bad I just want to cry. |

| It's hard to type with one dog in my lap, one under my arm, and one periodically walking across the keyboard. |

| Maybe they can do some other tests. Bones don't have to be broken to be in pain ... it could be ligaments or nerve pinch ... not to try and scare you ... just saying ... Is she feeling ANY better? Walking in circles sounds more neurological ... Please keep us posted ... sending good vibes your way ... |

| I'm sorry. They can't give meds without your consent... I would be beyond mad. Walking in circles is a neurological symptom. I would be worried about her brain. Can you try a different vet?

| It is so hard to know what to say. I am just so sorry that you are going through this difficult time with little Lucy. It is so hard to find vets that know what they are doing. By what you have written it makes me wonder if either of them have pin-pointed what the real problem is with Lucy's neck. Just stick to your guns and keep searching for the answer. Someone out there has to have the knowledge that will help your furbaby. Joanne |

| If she isn't significally better by tomorrow, I will probably call the first vet she saw about this as he is an orthopedist. He was going to call me, to see how she was doing, when he got in this afternoon, but because Lucy felt so bad, I took her in before he got there. That's how I managed to see a different vet today. He will be very concerned if she is still in pain. He will refer me to someone else if needed. I trust him much more than the other one. He's the first one Lucy saw for her LP and he diagnosed it as grade 4. He knew he didn't have enough experience to handle it, so he referred me to a place that did them all the time. I think she is in so much pain that she is confused and that's why she's walking in circles. (I hope!!!!!!!!!!) Last edited by majic50; 02-20-2008 at 05:51 PM. |

| If it's just muscle spasms, she should feel better shortly. If not, you might want to take her to a neurologist or orthopedic vet. Dogs can get herniated discs just like people and that wouldn't show up on an xray. I hope she feels better soon. |

| as i agree with a possible neuro issue what about her spinal alignment being out of whack.. Like when we go to a chiropractor. I know it sounds weird but our horses see a chiropractor and it works wonders.. but also if when the little one jumped on her (accidently of course) and her head was in that angle it could be out of alignment.. | Sounds like a pinched disk or nerve, but also remember that she will be slightly stoned for a while till the morphine clears her body. Prayers she feels better and nothing terrible is wrong.

| We were back to the vet this morning as she was in pain still. I saw the first vet, because he was in early for surgery today. He doesn't think it's neurological, but he will keep a close watch on her. In the mean time he gave her an injection of Robaxin to relax her muscles and some tablets of Robaxin to start giving her tonight if the injection seemed to help. He wants me to bring her back this afternoon to see how she is doing. She hasn't been drinking much, so this morning I mixed about a half teaspoon of baby food chicken with a saucer of water and she lapped it right up. I've also been feeding her canned food instead of her usual dry, because she didn't seem interested in the dry at all. |
