| New members, Joy and Louis. Please share tips 4 teaching Yorkie tricks & obedience! Hi Everyone! I am new to this board and have enjoyed reading everyone's stories for a few weeks now. Thought it was time to finally introduce myself. I am Joy and Louis Vuitton is my fur-baby. He's 5 months old. Louis is my happy, playful & obedient little guy and he loves car rides and hanging out in my tan Coach bag when we are out and about. Just love love love the spunky, loving and boy-ish natures of the males. I'm hoping to put that puppy energy toward more productive uses (like dancing on his hindlegs, playing catch, hide-and-go-seek, coming to me wherever I am in the house to bark to be let outside to pee and poo, coming immediately when called no matter what, laying down, going to sleep on cue, keeping his head down when he's in my purse so I can take him to class , etc) . Please share your step-by-step training tips here. I will start off with one I found from JuneBug when it comes to teaching your Yorkie to come the second you call him. Quote:
Be back a little later to post pics of Louis and share how I got my puppy 90% housetrained. (We haven't had an accident for 9 whole days now!!) Joy | |

| Joy's tips for house training. It took us 3 months to get to the point where Louis stopped having accidents in the house. His bladder grew to where he could hold it for 5-6 hours now and he's gotten a lot of reinforcements and reminders about "going to the bathroom OUTSIDE." Here's how I did it: We had Louis for 1 month before we found the Holy Grail treat: Pupcorn! He LOVES pupcorn and gets very excited to get it. You can buy this at Petsmart, $4 for a huge container and I break about 3 up into little pieces that have to last a whole day (there is a recommendation serving per 10 pound of dog). When he was a puppy, I took Louis outside every 30 minutes when I was home. Literally every 30 minutes. After he got up from a nap, after playing with his brother for about 15 minutes, after he drank water, ate, etc. 1. I got Louis very very excited about heading outside. Starting from the living room, I lead him to the door. I would say, "Louis, go outside," loudly and clearly and open the front door to let him out. When he steps out, I give him a treat. "Good outside, Louis!" Gradually, I showed him to follow me to the front door to the grass from further places in the house, like our bedroom. 2. Lead him to the grass on a leash and when I see him pee, I used the words "Good go to the bathroom" for #1 and #2 was "Good Hurry Up." Repeated for 3 months every time we go outside, Louis now knows to pee or poo on cue whenever I use the words. 3. I never let Louis out of my sight, he was in his crate if I could not watch him. My sister used to say that it was mean for me not to let him run around the house, but it was worth it when he learned that he should only go OUTSIDE. 4. Louis understood the three words (1) outside (2) go to the bathroom and (3) hurry up ... after 1 month or so. Whenever I saw a pee or poo, I would say, "NO. Go to the bathroom OUTSIDE!" and then march him outside. 5. When Louis was done with his business, I tell him "INSIDE!" and hold up a piece of pupcorn. Now he knows that when he follows me back inside, he will be treated. "Good INSIDE!" "Good GO TO THE BATHROOM OUTSIDE!" Now that he's finally learned how to wait and go outside..... We're going to have to teach Louis to pee on a puppy pad this winter since it does get to -40 degrees below here where we live. Pics of Louis as a little puppy. | Welcome to YorkieTalk, Joy and Louis!!! You said " -40 degrees below here where we live. " Where are you??? Congratulations on your excellent job potty training! We have had great success with wee wee pad training for Toto using the "reward and praise" method. I'm sure it won't take Louis long to get the hang of it ... especially at -40 degrees!!!

| Bettyeanne Thanks for the welcome. Okay, whoops! Not -40... high in the 40's and sometimes a low of 6 degrees in our cozy Nebraska home-away-from our sunny home of Southern California. (I'm at school and Louis is a native Husker.) The problem I have had in the past with pee pads is that Louis does a very hyper "poopie dance" and he needs to totter around in WIDE circles before settling on a spot. Squatting calmly on one little square is going to be very hard for him since he's used to having a wide patch of grass to go poo on. I have used reward and praise very successfully with OUTSIDE and now hopefully we won't start all over with the messes inside now that we're forced to switch. Quote:

| Joy, I just had to tell u that the pic of Louis in the Count costume is absolutely adorable!!! He looks soooooo cute in it. I wish I could find some outfits for my little one that FIT!! How much does Louis weigh? My Dolce only weighs 2 lbs. 7oz...., I tried buying her some baby clothes last night, but the smallest baby clothes are still too big for her. I think I have to find some online places that arent that expensive for a sweater because it gets cold here in NY too!! Welcome to Yorkietalk!! |

| Louis is a cutie! Welcome Joy to YorkieTalk, it's good to know people learn a lot from this site, it's what it was created for! It looks like you've done some great training work with Louis so far! Especially since he is only 5 months old! For training on pee pee pads, dab a bit of his pee onto the pad at first, then get him to associate the pad with peeing. If he can pee on command, let him sniff the pad next time he needs to pee, and then command him to pee there. It'll take a bit of time, but I'm sure he'll get associated with it soon enough. Have you read about Junebug's BANG! trick with Otis? It's definitely one of my favorite tricks of all time! And simple to train! :P http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...highlight=bang |

| Joy, you're absolutely right, I think we lucked up with Miss Prissy Paws! We were also furtunate that we could be with her 24/7 ... that makes a lot of difference too! In the beginning we simply watched her at those times that all the books instructed you to take them outside, after naps, meals and play. After these activities we simply placed her on the pad instead of outside and said "tee tee here"! She would get a little treat and lots and lots of praise and didn't take her long to get the hang of it ... or was it the treat?? On those occasions that she went somewhere other than the pad .... we would sit her on the pad and say "tee tee here" and gave her nothing! We use only the one command for both pee and poop ... so she knows if it's coming from "back there" it goes on the wee wee pad!! She had Paul, her trainer, in Louisiana, who stressed using "one word" commands ... he simply took our list of words that we were already using and added to it! He was wonderful ... she went from "belly-crawling every time we put her harness & leash on, to trotting alongside Paul like she was in the show ring in ONE session!! We really miss him ... he was making great progress with her at our home and was going to slowly begin to socialize her at his "Boot Camp" when we were suddenly transferred! We miss him! Nebraska!! I understand it gets quite cold there even if not -40 degrees!! Noone here in Colorado seems to even notice when there is SNOW on the high mesa!! My husband just laughs at me when I say "but it's going to be DOWN HERE"!!! It's really neat to see the "snow line" move lower and lower down the mesa! Tell Louis that Toto thinks he is very handsome and that his "Count Louis" costume is "the bomb"!!

| Dolce's Mom .. do you have a store called "Build-a-Bear"? You might find a little sweater there to fit Dolce. My granddaughter and I found a tiny sweater to fit Toto, when she was less than 2 lbs., in a toy department where they sold doll clothes!! It didn't fit her for long but at least it fit for the moment!!

| Dolce's Mom I second the Build-A-Bear stores. That is where the Count Louis outfit came from. Louis is around 4.5 lbs now and was around 3.7 when Halloween rolled around. I'll post bigger pics of the costume, you will see that it was slipping off of him. The Lil Rascal Just barely held still enough for the pictures. My sister and I were literally rolling on the floor laughing when we took the pics, it was sooo cute. Can't wait for Christmas, we're going to go buy a Santa bear costume. The great thing about the hats is that they have openings for the tails AND the ears... and they are much much cheaper than Petsmart. Good call, bettyeanne! | fasteddie Thanks for the welcome! I read the tips and that post is "da BANG!" LOL This is a very addicting site, I can't believe I've found a group of people who are just as obsessed about the little cuties. A little FYI: The last Yorkie I had (gave him up to a friend b/c I lived in a no-pet apartment at the time) I named EWOK!! He literally looked like one. Tee hee! |

| bettyeanne Wow lady, Tee Tee is a smartie and SUCH A cutie!! You're going to laugh but the FIRST Yorkie my dad ever brought home (the one before EWOK above that ran away from home) I named TOTO. Toto, Ewok and now Louis. This one's a keeper, I swear. Yup, mmm hmmm. LOL <Joy is taking notes furiously> The detailed tips for pee pee pad training helps a lot... I would treat Louis but have never used the "praise" method before. Also, I did not know that we were suppposed to use one word commands. Can certainly understand that long strings of words about "Go to the bathroom" "Go for a Ride" "Go for a walk" would confuse the little guys. Heard so many good things about Doggie Bootcamp, when I get back to Cali I'll be looking for a good trainer. A friend of mine knows of a trainer who does police dogs, hopefully he'll whip my ball of undisciplined energy into shape. Colorado is beautiful! I have never lived anywhere with snow ever before, so I am dreading the first one this winter! Thank Toto for Louis and she is certainly a cute perky one in her picture. Right now Louis is working on COMING immediatly when called. No exceptions. We'll post our progress shortly. Thanks again everyone, for the welcome! |

| Joy, Thanks! The only problem we encounter with "Toto" is that most everyone assumes that she is a boy!! The wee wee pad is the most wonderful thing ever invented!! Toto seldom gets her "Prissy Paws" on the ground so that's all she knows! The one word commands are great too. The only thing I miss about Louisiana is Paul [Toto's trainer]! He was just wonderful with her ... it was amazing! We had tried and tried to get her to tolerate her harness and leash and all she would do is flatten out on the floor and no amount of coaxing would get her to even stand up!! Ten minutes with Paul and you would've thought she had been on a leash all her life! She was the smallest dog he had worked with ... and they just hit it right off! He taught us as well. A few commands have 2-3 words ... for instance, when she is walking on the leash and gets the "slack" out or stops to sniff, you simply say "Stay with me" and she falls right back into pace! This is one tiny little girl who can take you on a walk!! Another command that we were all learning was ... if you want her to come to you ... hold your hand down near your shin and say "Right here". We certainly found that a good trainer can do wonders for these little energetic, wild babies! When we get settled here in Grand Junction, we are going to see if we can find someone like Paul. He actually trained "Service Dogs" ... if I could figure out how to get Toto certified as a service dog, she wouldn't have to stay in her carrier when we fly! I don't know what she could train for except to give peace of mind to her Mom ... I don't think that's a qualified service. We have spent several winters with snow! Two in Chicago, one is Missouri ... last time in Colorado we only saw the fall and actually left during the first day of snow! We are kinda looking forward to it ... as long as we don't have to walk in it! Most of the "locals" here say that they don't get much snow ... hey! we're from Alabama ... if the ground is white, it's a big snow!! Tell Louis that Toto does admire "handsome guys"! Keep us posted on the training ... and please share tips! When trying to train these spoiled babies ... any tips are helpful!
