| Would you correct someone's pronounciation in this situation? At my shop (bike shop) there are lots of components made by companies outside the US, thus many company's names are mispronounced. Since I am the "professional" LOL should I be correcting customers who pronounce names wrong? I don't want to sound like a pretentious know it all, but I'd say about 99% of the fixed gear community here in my city are pronouncing stuff wrong, and since most of them are pronouncing it the same way, they think they are right. Example: Sugino (japanese). They say sue-jee-no. Correct way: soo-gee-no. Japanese does not have a soft "G" otherwise they would have used a "J". There are many others, but the Sugino crank is very popular in our community and I hear it almost every day. What's a nice un-snobby way to correct them? Actually, what would you do when people call you by the wrong name? That happens a lot too, and I'm too shy to correct them, then when they find out they got my name wrong, they are even more embarrassed. They call me Patricia instead of Priscilla. I even got a Michelle and Stephanie before.

| I always correct my name. I get called Melissa a lot, so I just call them another name and when they correct me, I say oh, well my names Michele, we were both calling each other wrong! Hubby has stopped trying to explain that there is no such thing as a hot water heater. It's a water heater. It heats cold water to make it hot. Why would you want something to heat hot water??? I laugh at him when customers call because I can always tell when it's a "I need my hot water heater changed" call. I would just repeat back to them and say it correctly.,. You want the xxxx crank, correct?? Maybe they'll pick up on it. Maybe not. Quote:

| LOL I have! I say soo-gee-no, they say, you mean sue-jee-noh? That's funny about the hot water heater though. That's true. I hate when they say wheel when they mean tire. Wheel = rim. Tire is a tire.

| Maybe instead of 'correcting' them, just make a point to use the correct pronunciation a time or two in the conversation. I know what you mean about bike names and components. Some words don't sound too bad if they're American-ized and mis-pronounced, but some can really grate on the ears. People get names wrong all the time, even very common ones. If someone gets my name wrong, I may say something like, "well, actually it's Jim, but so long as I know you're talking to me, I'll answer to most anything". You know, just something to keep the tension off the situation.

| I'd want to correct them on the company name because it can make a difference. My friend bought her baby a Graco carseat (grey-co) but said Grecco (bless her heart). She does buy some ritzy unknown brands so I assumed I heard right only to see that it said Graco. But if I was looking for the product by that name it could throw things off. As for the name, I have terrible short term memory so I completely understand. If it's a one time meeting or something I'll let them say whatever but if I'm going to see them again I politely say "oh, it's Christina" & smile. And if I'm not 100% sure on theirs, I omit the name.

| I agree with casually repeating the company name in conversation. If they try to correct you, politely try to explain the pronunciation. Sounds a lot like Porsche. Most of the US is convinced that it is one syllable and leave off the "ah" at the end. Ask a German to pronounce it. Personal names I always correct. The instant the person says Patricia, you say Priscilla. Don't wait for them to finish their sentence. If I got someone's name wrong, I would want to be corrected.

I don't know how to get Stephine or Michelle from Priscilla. I will correct them when they get my name wrong. However, not many ways to get Amanda wrong unless ppl think I am my sister and start asking me about my sister Amanda. | |
