| New job prospect So here I am, stuck in a job I don't really enjoy anymore, in a city I'm sick of, in the same province I've lived in all my life. I've decided I want to move next year, I don't know where, I don't know when, but just sometime I want to get out of here, and it'll get done if I actually put a timeline on it! So last week I found this ad for a job in Vancouver and I didn't have quite the experience they were asking for but I thought what the heck, I might as well get practise making a new resume and sending one out so it's not all new to me when I'm ready. I sent it last week and when I got home tonight there was a message on my phone saying they have my resume and want to talk to me. WHAT??? So I couldn't breathe for awhile, and then I was shaking for awhile, and then I even cried for awhile lol. I am calling him back tomorrow. Oh my gosh I'm just a small town Saskatchewan girl and this big Vancouver engineering firm is INTERESTED in me! I just wanted to share. I'm pretty much overcome with emotion. I want to go SO BAD but wasn't expecting anything this soon. I have never been to Vancouver and I don't even know if I'd be able to afford living there. From what I've seen it's really tough to find dog-friendly rental places there. I just feel so frazzled right now!

| Congratulations! It sounds very exciting, isn't it wonderful when dreams begin to come true. You've never been to Vancouver??? I've been twice and it's one of the coolest, most hip cities I've ever been to. I really love it a lot. It is clean and high rise and the scenery is gorgeous. I loved all the cultural variety and it gave me a sense of fun and adventure! I think you should check it out! It can't hurt and it will give you experience, even if you don't get the job or if you decide not to take it should it be offered. You are young, and this is an exciting turn of events. Enjoy it!!!

| Thanks! I've always wanted to go to Vancouver, but life has just never taken me there I've been to the mountains tons of times but never to the other side lol. If this job is offered to me, as long as the salary is more than cost of living, I will take it in a heartbeat. I'm a little confused about what is happening when I call back. The recruiter said he'd like for me to call back so we can "discuss the job further". Does that mean a telephone interview? Or what? Then will the employer also interview me if the recruiter thinks I'm good enough? I'm not good with this stuff... I had one interview during college for a work term, and then the same company called to ask me to come back before I was even halfway through my last semester of college. I hadn't even made a resume or applied anywhere! So my current job came to me pretty easily. I'm just not sure what to expect now.

| Oh my gosh he called my cell phone at work and I didn't want to answer there. It was 15 minutes to lunch so I ran out right away and just got his message on my voicemail asking me to call him back again. I drove home and called right back. He's on the phone. I left a message for him to call ME again. Ugh I'm so nervous I can't even eat lunch! Just waiting and waiting...

| Let us know what happens!!! I"m sorry, I'm no help with anything - I've only had 3 jobs in my life and really didn't have to "interview" per se, for any of them. But let us know how it goes ASAP!!!

| Well he called back right after I posted here. We talked about my qualifications and he told me about the company and the person who left and stuff. I guess the woman who was there is a step up from me, with more design experience. I did tell him that it's my interest to go in that direction and gain design experience. But he did say the only thing he's hesitant about is my lack of experience. But he said I have the right attitude so they might go for that and train me, but not to be really surprised if they don't. He also said since I have less experience, they wouldn't give me the salary listed in their ad, and if anything maybe a bit more than I make now. Oh yeah and the job isn't in Vancouver, it's in a small engineering firm in Chilliwack, which is about a 2 hour drive from the center of Vancouver, and about 1 hour from the outskirts apparently. It's a smaller town with a population of 70,000. Now I'm not quite sure what to think! But I did tell the recruiter to go ahead and give them my resume. He said the next step if they're interested would be to set up a phone interview, and then an interview in person. He said that would be MY expense though to fly out there to interview and stay at a hotel and fly back. I told him I'd only maybe consider that if it was a very good possibility I'd get the job. I guess we'll see

| Well maybe the smaller town is a good thing, for several reasons. Maybe there won't be as many applicants because it is out of Vancouver. Also, maybe it will be a lower cost of living and that could be very good!!! It sucks though, that they won't pay for your interview expenses... Maybe you can make a vacation of it, or something - go on over to Vancouver for the weekend!! Good Luck!!

| How exciting I'm the QUEEN of phone interviews so I can give you some tips. Do a ton of research on their company, make sure you have at least 3-5 questions to ask them, and SMILE! They can tell you are smiling by the tone and inflection of your voice. Good Luck, I'm really excited for you~ |

| Thanks! I looked at their website and there's hardly any information there! I'll be coming up with questions tonight because the recruiter will be calling me tomorrow after work to go over anything else I might want to ask before the interview. I guess I do have one problem... I have a vacation already booked and paid for in November, and I wouldn't be getting holidays yet from the company. How do I bring this up to them?

| Yeah that might be best. The recruiter said he's basically working for me and anything I tell him, he can't tell the company without me giving him permission. He is also going to work with me on the offering process until we reach something that both I and the company are happy with in terms of salary and stuff. Maybe that's the time to bring it up. Oh yeah, and on my resume I put references "available upon request" because I didn't want to tell my boss I was looking for another job, when I really wasn't seriously! Now what? Should I ask around my work for references tomorrow? The one person who works directly with me already agreed, but I haven't told anyone else. Is it time to talk to management? Would they ask me for references in my phone interview?

| They may ask for references at the end of the interview. A good rule of thumb is 2 professional references and a personal reference (who can speak of your character). Perhaps 2 people that you work with and a college professor/mentor that you've had? Some companies will not call your supervisor without permission from you however, if you are not ready to give that permission they may question it. |

| Hmmm I'm not sure who I could ask for a personal reference. I've been out of school for two years and most of the instructors there were retiring that year, or close to retiring. The head of the program was my mentor for my final project but he rarely could remember my name, he was looking after so many students. How would I bring it up to my office manager that I'd like him to be a reference? He does not want to let me go. He doesn't stop talking about how much I've done for the company in the past two years. I don't know how to say just out of nowhere "can you be my reference for another job?" Should I do it in person or is email okay? I feel so bad I'd probably cry in person

| I say you hold off on asking your manager for a reference until you know the company is interested in you and you are interested in them. I think it's important for you to really know as much as you can so you can decide if that company is a good fit for you. Ask about their organizational culture, do they provided professional development opportunities (improvement training, etc.) and the other things that are important to you. Since it's a new area it would be appropriate for you to ask about the area too. When you do want to ask your manager for a reference I would do it in person. Explain to him why you are looking elsewhere and what your future plans are. Best of luck tomorrow I have my fingers crossed for you |
