| Talk about venting...... OK, I confess, I am a smoker. I consider myself a considerate smoker and do not smoke in public places, around my puppies or other people. I go outside even though my hubby smokes too, we go outside even at home. I was recently in the hospital - no smoking, ok. But did they offer me a patch or anything? No. Did the head nurse have any compassion at all? No. MY nurse did and asked for permission for me to go outside and smoke but the head nurse vetoed it. I asked for a patch, having nicotine withdrawals. Did I get one? No. Doctor has to order it. They knew I smoked when I registered. What did I get for my nicotine withdrawals? Valium and xanax!!!!! What is wrong with this picture? They kept me doped up rather than let me have a cigarette! I know they are bad for me, but rather than help me find a solution that might have helped me quit or worked with me with some compassion and understanding, they pumped me full of mind meds so I would shut up! I'm still a little off from all that stuff, I hate mind meds and they seem to take forever to get out of my system. Thanks, just needed to blow this off, I still don't quite get the point!

Me too! I think that was so mean of them! I would have been such a pain in the a$# that they would have had to do something. I'm glad you're home and doing well!

| I was a pain in the posterior! Threatened to ama and everything - I think that's why they loaded me up with the drugs, keep me quiet and all. At first I thought they were giving me some kind of nicotine drug until I started feeling the effect and thought, wow, cigs don't make me feel this good, I'll just start using the nicotine pills! About to get addicted to nerve pills - wonder which is worse for you. By the by, my lungs are as clear as a teens - NO ONE could believe I was a long time smoker! I'm thinking of seeing the doc and telling him to put me on those valium nicotine drugs to help me quit the nasty habit of smoking - become a druggie instead of a smoker, guess it's probably cheaper and I wouldn't have to worry about the second hand smoke hurting others.

| Windy - that is B.S. I am a smoker, too. I know what you mean about house arrest on the floor of the hospital. I went to visit my newborn nephew and took him for a little stroll up and down the hallway. We started beeping and about 10 people came running. They thought I was stealing him.

| Im a smoker to! and the same as you I never smoke in my home etc etc.. and having a previous experience like your's, so I asked the Nurse to contact my Dr. or that I needed to see him, for him to prescribe the patch, and I (really) bugged them till they brought in the patch my second time when making arrangements for surgery I requested that the patches be submitted with my other meds. So if you ever have to go back just make sure you have that ciggy (patch) condtion in your pre-op once i checked in I confirmed that the patch was included with my scripts. |

| That's ridiculous. Instead of giving you a patch to sooth one addiciton, they just give you addictive painkillers? That's just problems wit the whole system, gosh....you should write a letter to the editor. I'm serious! I work for the paper and process letters to the editor every day and I would let this one be put in! (I throw out a lot of crap. But this one needs to be in there, for sure!) I smoked since I was 16 years old....but was determined to QUIT in honour of my upcoming wedding, when I was 22. I smoked a LOT thru college (not sure if I could have made it thru any semester exams w/o it, haha) ....but I am soooo glad I was able to kick the habit. It took a long time, like nearly a year, to not want a cigarette anymore. But now, I can think fondly of "the old days" but I dont' desire to smoke anymore...and I even tried once while out with a girlfriend venting about work issues (and I used to vent BY smoking) and I just coughed....it wasnt' the same. *sigh* but, that's a good thing. Anway, moving on....

| Gosh Windy, sometimes I truly wonder if doctors have any common sense. Could it have been because the nicotine could have interferred with the tests they were doing on your heart? But what about the effect of the other drups like you said? You honestly feel like saying "Think people!!" I've never been a smoker but boy with my obsessive compulsive personality if I had I'd be a heavy smoker. But I'm allergic and have asthma.

| in my expeirience hospitals have never offered very good care...... my brother was in the hospital a while ago because he and his friend ran into abrick wall going 45 mph (his friend was drunk, and so was he..... friend was driving) anyways, they put the BOTH OF THEM IN THE SAME HOSPITAL ROOM, (when my dad went in there he wanted to kill the guy..... sharing a room was NOT a good idea) on top of this, they treated this guy (lets call him chris) like a KING (HES THE ONE THAT RAN INTO THE F*ING WALL and almost killed my brother!!!! ) so........ this guy chris gets treated like a king, and my brother is IGNORED, he had NO NURSE (My mother took track of everything they were giving him, they werent even sure hwo much of what they gave him!!!!... he ran out of IV fluids and it took them a whoel day to replace it) and then they said he couldnt go home untill he ate solid food (and they gave him a liquid lunch!!!!!) they wouldnt even give him solid food.... the whole thing was horrible, my mother yelled at the head nurse and threatened to sue the hospital for their lack of care (after they heard this we had people calling the house to apologize and also they practically DID the paperwork for victims assistance.....)......... i dunno.......... i hate hospitals , and like i said, this is only one esperience out of many |

| Unfortunately, you are in KY, therein lies the problem. In NYC, any hospital will give you a patch???? Actually 6 years ago when I had my son and I was in a major NYC hospital, me and a nurse hid and had a ciggie together!!!!!!! All hospitals have the patch handy and it's easier to administer than, say, NARCOTCS! You have every right to be pissed. I hope everything is OK with you though???? |

| Windy, You have every rite to be upset. I dont understand why they didnt give you the patch. That is way to help you stop smoking. Instead they drug you up. Some hospitals, grrr. Jbarile gave you a good advise. |

| The pills were definetly worse for you and very habit forming. If you were in pain you should have gotten pain pills that aren't much worse than valium and Xanax. I would definetly complain to the hospital and really bad. Getting off XAnax is as bad as getting off Cocaine. Really bad stuff. |

| Hospitals all almost always suck! I like Baptist Hospital in Corbin though. I got in touch with the head of nursing in Baptist in Lexington (that was not my only bad experience there) she was most apologetic and said that the head nurse had no business butting in, the decision should have been between my doctor and my nurse. I never had the patch before because I always go to Baptist and they discuss smoking up front during admission, if the doctor says it's ok, you can sign out to smoke and sign back in when you're done, you can go outside for walks if you get clautrophobic (which I am) or you can get a patch and mild anxiety reducers. I guess I'm just use to them and thought a Baptist hospital is a Baptist hospital. I had some specific requests, backed by my doctor - bed next to the window if at all possible and a regular diet, I don't weigh a hundred pounds soaking wet and need all the carbs and stuff I can get. Neither request was honored and I told that to the head of nursing who then passed me off to the head of admissions. Oh well, guess the important thing is that the problem is fixed and I'm back home recovering with Lida Rose. While I was gone she apparently had a reaction to the front line the vet gave her and her hair is slowly falling out. Poor baby. She acts just fine and the vet said it will grow back. Apparently she's old enough for it just maybe not big enough yet!
