| 4th of July Fireworks-I don't want her to be scared! This will be Gracie's first real 4th of July. She was less than a month old on 7/4/06. My cats have grown to tolerate the fireworks, so I don't worry about them. What can I do to let Gracie know that fireworks are fun and she should not fear the noise? In the future, I want to be able to go out with friends to see the fireworks and have Gracie with me, or leave her home knowing that she won't be freaked out by the noise.

| Last year, we held Buttercup in our arms and cuddled with him while my son and the neighbors' children played with fireworks. He seemed a little distress over the loud popping for the first 30 minutes and then he warmed up to it and joined them (only he didn't pop it himself). Just a precaution though, it can be dangerous because my neighbor's poodle ran staight into a rocket that was about to shoot into the air. |

| If Gracie is anything like our three, she will hate the loud noise of fireworks. We were home last July 4th and our babies ended up in our back bathroom, in our arms just shaking. I am so worried about this year's fireworks as our Lexie is pregnant with 6 or more puppies and she is due July 19th, so I must do something so she and really all of them don't stress. Any suggestions how I can accomplish this? Do they make ear plugs for Yorkies?

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if you don't want her to be scared of the fireworks you must act like nothing is wrong with the loud noises. If she acts scared don't coddle her and make her think that there is something to be scared of. Same thing goes with thunderstorms. If you start babying them its only reinforcing their 'scared' behavior.

| I don't think all dogs are scared of fire works, although a lot are. Lacy has never been afraid of them and even went with me last year to watch a firework show. She just acted like her normal self.

| My Petey is afraid of everything and I never cuddled him, but when it starts to thunder, he comes running into my arms.. Some dogs, just like children are afraid. My Bell is also very pregnant and she isn't afraid of the firework noise but she barks and runs around like a crazy woman. Problem is she is due anytime between July 6th and 12th.. I need to try to find the quietest place in the house for her.

My furkids Donating Member | For Sadies first 4th of July I took her with us to the fireworks. She was absolutely TERRIFIED! I felt so bad for my poor little girl..Nothing I did comforted her. She tried to crawl up over my shoulder to get away from the noise...I think if she could have crawled into my body she would have...She is not afraid of any loud noises. We have a shooting range behind our house so she hears guns firing all the time and it doesn't bother her at all...Thunder...not a problem but the fireworks sent her into a panic..I will NEVER take her with us again.

| This is Wobie's first 4th of July as well. I'm planning on taking him with me to the fireworks show, so I hope he doesn't freak! He's usually fine with new sights and sounds, so I'm not too worried.

| Get some Rescue Remedy - It's a blend of Flower essense that has a calming effect. You can get it at most health food stores or Nutritional suppliment stores like GNC - All it would take is one or 2 drops in their water or spritz it on them with a diluted mister. "Rescue Remedy helps ease stress and stabilizes the emotions of dogs during times of upset. Rescue remedy is helpful for pet medication in a great variety of stress inducing situations. Rescue Remedy acts as an excellent all-purpose bach flower remedy for dogs who reportedly respond very favorably irrespective of their state or cause of suffering. The single most useful bach flower remedy combination as it helps with any kind of stress or trauma your dog may suffer, such as accidents, birthing, illness, traveling, and stress. Rescue remedy also is excellent for visits to the vet or groomer, fear of loud noises, shock, trauma or mistreatment, separation anxiety or any emotional difficult dog behavior. Dr. Bach combined Rock Rose, Star of Bethlehem, Impatiens, Cherry Plum, and Clematis in his only composite flower remedy and called it Rescue Remedy."

| Do you have anything loud enough to drown them out? We have a dehumidifier in the basement that's loud enough to cover the sound. Maybe keep the AC on, or the house fan, or a CD of some nice music? Lucy and Tucker seem to get mad at the fireworks, not so much afraid. As in "who dares to disturb the peace??" mad. I don't provide any reaction to the fireworks. It is the one time I let them bark for quite awhile. If it's ok to shoot off fireworks, you have to take the repercussions that come with it. But I'm usually in bed by 10 with the air on, so it's not like they're out there barking all night. Teresa |

| Thanks for the reminder about the rescue remedy. I have some and may give some to Gracie before show time. I don't want to distract her from the fireworks because I want her to experience them and understand they are nothing to fear. I would in no way consider taking her to a public display for her first fireworks show. I would be so afraid that she would freak, slip out of her harness and run off and get hit by a car or something. She is afraid of the vacuum and the ironing board folding (it is very old and loud). Thanks for the reminder about not coddling her. I try not to do that when she is frightened of other things. I think we will watch the fireworks on TV, and share an ice-cream cone, our usual evening routine (except the fireworks, that will be new).

| We live about 15 min. away from Disneyland so we hear fireworks evey night at 9:40 pm! It's more faint than the local 4th of July fireworks but I'm hoping since they are used to Disneyland that having the sound louder will be taken with a grain of salt. On top of that, we just had the Space Shuttle land in CA and we got the Sonic Boom and they did ok with that too. They barked and ran to the door but calmed right down. Good luck to all of you!
