| Naughty things your Yorkies do? Newbie Questions! Hello! I am new here, and finally got up the courage to post. I am planning to get a small breed dog sometime in the next few months, and a Yorkie is on my rather short list of potential dogs. We have a small staffie, and she is a good little dog, but boy does she like "looking for trouble"! And due to her ridiculously big jaws and super high intelligence she is very hard to entertain, toy-wise. We're not sure if this is just her terrier nature, or if it is the doggie OCD (our vet actually recommended meds for it!), but I really don't want a dog that is a hyperactive little nut, lol. Yorkies are often described as lively, active, busy, etc, and I was wondering how that "translates"! So, for all you yorkie owners . . . when your little ones are naughty, what is it that they do? I'd love to hear about the most terrible, destructive things you can think of. Also, do yorkies like sitting on laps and cuddling? I really want a lovey, affectionate dog, not one that is aloof and likes to be alone. I would be getting a male, if it matters. And is it true that if you have a yorkie in the house it just has to be the dominant dog? Our boy dog is a sweetie, but he is big and definitely not the submissive type. Thanks so much for reading! I'd appreciate any advice you have, and look forward to meeting you all. Regards, Colette |

| Welcome to YT. Yorkies can be so different. Some are angels that like to lie on your lap all day, some run around like mad and get into all kinds of mischief, than there are all the ones in between. You can have one owner describe two so that you'd think they were not the same breed. Mine isn't descructive but he would fall into the hyperactive little nut category. He is always on the go, likes a lot of attention and requires a lot of wearing out or I will not get a good night's sleep. Nothing naughty comes to mind but he was difficult to housebreak. I'm able to be home all day so I was on top of it but it still took a year (my first yorkie took two months). I don't think many yorkies like to be alone but not all of them like to cuddle on laps. Gus is very affectionate but not much of a lap dog. He likes to be near me all the time though and loves to give everyone kisses. He is the dominant dog in our house.

| I only have experience with my Sissy. She loves to play, but equally loves to be on my lap or cuddling in my arms. I would not describe her as hyper at all. We also have another dog (an Eskimo Spitz) who is 12 years old and has never acted like a dog (she does not play with toys, hates the car and walks and does not play well with others). She basically ignores Sissy or growls and snaps at her when she tries to get her to play!! So, I'm not sure who you would say is dominant there. Sissy's most destructive habit is she will shred any kind of paper or tissue she can get her little paws on. You have no idea just how many tiny pieces a single kleenex can be shredded into!!!! She also tends to be a barker and will bark at anyone she sees outside, including the squirrels!! As long as she is not by a window, she is fine.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | 3 of my 4 Yorkies that I have had, when they were puppies chewed holes in the walls. That's the worst. All of them have been more laid back but playful. All of them have been snugglers. But they all have had unique personalities as well, I have an older Pomeranin who is very dominant and Cali will test her but respects her as top dog. In my opinion, you can;t go qrong with a Yorkie. Just do your research and find a great Breeder.

| I have one yorkie who's six months. He's in the middle of his "terrible" stage with teething etc. I guess the worst thing he does is chew and scratch on the walls along with fingers but that goes along with teething I guess. We have just gotten a ex pen so he cant get to the walls in his room (which is the only place he goes after the wall). Other than that he loves to cuddle and play. High energy but again he's a pup. I don't think you can go wrong with a yorkie....they are the best. |

| I also have just one, a boy, he's going to turn 7 months after Christmas. He's naughty in a cute way (or maybe it's just cute because he's so tiny, if I had a lab behave like that I wouldn't think it CUTE LOL )... He gets those zoomies sometimes, running wildly and growling at his toys, he takes them and throws them around, it does get pretty loud, I'd never think such a small thing can throw that hard. He learned how to open his gate and gets to the bathroom where he usually steals the dirty clothes from the hamper and chews on toilet paper . He used to have a biting stage and was chewing on some furniture (clear deo helped! ) - he's done with teething thank God. Now he throws something under a cabinet (the one that it's a pain to take it out from underneath) and stands there whining and scratching the floor - I know he does it on purpose when I'm trying to watch TV . He gets that scratching thing when he stands on two hind paws and starts scratching at the mirror or door (to the closet..). He jumps up and tries to nip at my hair when I'm not paying attention to him. Or sits down with his toy and squeaks. BUT, other than that, he's the most loveable cuddle bug giving kisses when I ask, knows how to Sit and Down. Knows Treat and Walk too. When I call him, he drops everything and runs like it's burning . Pretty independent but always makes sure he knows where I am in the house... Very smart too. You're going to have a lot of fun with your dog, and because they're so small, we let more things slip away than we would with a bigger dog.

| I too have yorkies that like to dig holes in the walls. I dont know what it is. They like to chew shoes, tear up any paper, books, shoes, etc. They drag my socks outside so I never have a pair that matches. LOL........Most of them are snugglers. The males are my biggest snugglers. They are really attached to me. I have 2 females that are dominant and the others seem to let them be the alpha dogs and are fine with that. My little male likes to think he is but he gets put in his place by the females..... |

| I forgot to mention they love to chew on the wires. I am amazed they havent gotten shocked yet. I need to find a way to break them of that because I am worried they are going to get hurt or even worse. |

| Owning a yorkie is like, IMO, raising a two year old for 15yrs! LOL They are "Always" into something like toilet tissue, going into your purse/pocket looking for kleenex, watching you eat hoping they will get some and some, like Buddy, will constantly try to be boss! And they actually "THINK". I can see the wheels turning in his head when I talk to him and he really knows what I am saying. They get to know numerous words and react when they hear them be it go out or someone is coming, who wants a treat, let's go shopping, or in the car for a ride, whatever they know! They are loving, cuddling and playfull. Good luck and welcome to YT. Carol & Buddy |

| Roxy and Titan are very lovey and cuddly and can't wait for me to sit down so they can be on my lap. When they had pups they were pretty much the same. Now we have a new little girl that we bought a few weeks ago, Naughty little Nicky. And so far she has lived up to her name. she is into everything. Ate the phone cord, chews on the carpet, digs my kids underwear out of the hamper and carries them around, eats my magazines, eats the Christmas tree eats your socks while your in them. We sold the last of our babies the week before we got Nicky and never had any problems with them doing any of these things. Every Yorkie is different.

| Yea I didnt want to mention the underwear but dont leave them out because it could be quite embarassing when you have company and here they come with your underwear hanging out of their mouth and they all start fighting over them and tugging them in every direction. Not a pretty sight. LOL....... I just wanted to edit this to say, not that is has ever happened to me or anything..................... Last edited by CO_yorkie_momma; 12-21-2006 at 11:32 AM. |

| Notice it's only my kids underwear that mine drag out . And of coarse my kids always throw them in the hamper so the pup has to drag them out of there. My kids would never leave them on the floor (or at least that's what they tell me) But i always feel so bad taking them away from Nicky bc she seems so proud of her find

| Yorkies do bad things? What? Maizee to this day still pulls all my underwear out of my dirty basket and piles them up. I hate it! When she was a puppy, it was so cute because she would take off with one of my bras and hide under the cup. All you could see was this bra skating across the floor. Other than that, she wasn't bad at all. Potty training was a little rough on her, but she finally got the hang of it |

| Thanks you all for your replies! I'm really enjoying reading about all the mischief your yorkies make. Getting into laundry (lol at the bras!) . . . shredding paper . . . CHEWING on walls (!?) . . . they sound adorable! Really, though, it sounds like normal doggie behavior to me, and like some of you mentioned, it can be cute because they're small. Our staffie does things like rip up throw pillows, tear apart comforters, and run off with and destroy whole kleenex boxes and potholders from the kitchen counter in the blink of an eye (she is spring loaded, I swear!). No shoe or laundry hamper is safe! And once we left a set of 10 lb plastic coated dumbells in the living room, and came back to find her making great progress chewing them up, and then she came up to us prancing around with one in her mouth like a bone. And she's not even knee-high! So . . . I think a yorkie's antics would be no problem, lol. And it is nice to hear about the variation in yorkie temperaments. I guess I would have to ask the breeder for one that is less dominant (not the first to eat), and more cuddly. I hope I could find a breeder to sell to me though, so many of the good ones seem super picky about placement and we have two larger dogs. |

| Gracie was the leader of her pack (litter). Now, I am the leader of her pack. Dominance is all in how you interact with your dog. Gracie loves to snuggle on my lap, but equally loves to play and chase the cats. She will shred paper, cardboard, pee pads, whatever, if given the chance. That's about as naughty as it gets with her, at least so far! She is my first dog at least as an adult, and I don't think I could have picked a better breed or a better dog.
