I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Retractable cord leash Do any of you have a retractable cord leash? The inside pamphlet has all sorts of warnings. I know companies have to be careful about stating warnings for legal purposes, but it starting to scare me. I did a forum search for it and didn’t find any information. Thanks. http://www.flexiusa.com/warnings.asp |

| I use them. I have 4 of them. One for each dog. blue, black red and pink. We walk only 2 at a time tho. I never hold 2 in one hand. You do have to be careful with them. I can see how they could hurt your dogs if you don't pay close attention to them.

| I have one. You should be careful, as the cord could cause harm to you or to your pup. I only use mine when I have Gracie in a big grassy area and want to let her have enough freedom to run. I don't think it works well for training, or in situations where you may need to gain instant control of your baby. I also had it get tangled up with another dog's retractable leash. It was not fun!

| I never use them. I don't advise my clients to buy them either, it just teaches your dog to pull. Especially our little guys more so than larger breeds. You want more leash? You just pull to get it! is the message they typically get. Then when your pup is on a 6' instead of the retractable people wonder why their little one is choking himself at the end of the lead (this could still happen even if he/she had never been on a retractable though.) Either case, in regards to safety? If never personally heard of an injury related to the use of these leashes. Walk on I say, use 'em if it appeals to you! |

| We use one for Toto and don't have any problem. She is trained to potty inside and out but doesn't like anyone right beside her when she "goes". She is a very modest little girl ... the retractable leash gives her "space". We did have a bad experience with one [not ours] in a PetSmart parking lot. We were about to leave the parking lot when I noticed a man holding a leash and, natural reflex of a pet lover, I automatically looked to see what his dog looked like. When I saw no dog I automatically realized it was on the end of a retractable leash and the idiot had let him full out! I screamed at Patrick just as we were about to back up .... yep, the pup was right behind us! The man looked so embarrassed .... the idiot had just bought the leash and couldn't wait to try it out!!

| If you use a flexi please be responsible. Always know where your pet is, don't use it in high-traffic areas (people, dog, or cars) and make sure they learn how far they can go. I have about 5 leashes but I do training, and I don't train on my flexi. We train on a 4 or 6 foot flat leash. We walk on either a 4 ft flat leash or my hands free bunjee leash. We use the flexi to let Loki go potty outside because we do not have a fence (townhome) and he is trained to go right out to the grass and come back in. I don't think I would ever let him off leash so this is a great answer to not having a fence. He is completely housetrained and he is trained to sit to get his leash on and off. I have had bad experiences with Loki where he was on a short leash walking by my side and someone's big golden retriever was on a flexi and charged him. Friendly dog, but Loki gets fearful when a big unfamiliar dog comes running at him and he is on-leash, so I didn't appreciate it. Plus, we were in a crowd and the man didn't even know where his dog was and I almost tripped on the flexi and it almost got Loki tangled up in the middle of the crosswalk. I can train my dog, but unfortunately I can't force people to train theirs...

| We have them. The only problem we've ever had is they same as with any leash....the dogs getting them tangled around each other or walking around us with them on. Nothing I would consider dangerous though. |

| I have one too and I like it, the regular leash keeps getting under my pup's belly, he steps on it and it tangles around his paws etc... The retractable one is great, stays up but you have to be careful with it, and pay attention to the dog all the time... otherwise you keep walking and realize your dog's 3 feet behind you chewing on something he shouldn't...

blondflava - That is why I use a 4 ft leash. The 6 foot ends up under his belly because it is too long. I also love my new hands free leash!

| If you have the type of retractable leash, where it has a little bit of leash then a cord, please be careful. I found out this summer that if you are wearing shorts & you pup wraps it around your legs it can leave nasty rope burns. I have a scar on each leg because of it now (not that I didn't have a tons of scars anyway). I finally convinced my husband to buy the retractable leash that has a wide piece the whole length instead of the cord & it has illiminated the problem.
