| Cheap Spaying/Neutering Services So time has come for Mason to get neutered. I have been reading about local shelters/organizations providing spaying/neutering services for cheap (around $50) offered by licensed vets. From what I read, local vets volunteer their time to spay/neuter pets that otherwise do not get fixed due to high costs of these sugeries. My vet is charging $340 for the surgery and I am contemplating whether to take Mason to a local shelter to get fixed. Of course I am concerned about safety and quality of surgery offered at such location and don't know what to do! What do you all think? Has anyone had their baby fixed at a shelter or an organization? Do you think this might be a bad idea? HELP! |

| I get all of my animals done thro our local animal birth control. They do the surgery the same way and the vet is a good guy, I personally don't see the point in paying extra if you don't have to. This doesn't mean the day Pita gets fixed won't be a horrible day for me, I will be sooo nervous!! |

| I am curious to hear responses to this post. Esme's spaying will cost $209. My husband thinks we should have it done at the shelter for $35.. I kind of would rather have her spayed with HER vet and want to pay the extra money. Esme is going to be spayed in June.

| The vets that do the low cost spay and neuter generally have their own practice and do the low cost thing in addition to their normal patients, so the vets are good. If you have concerns you can call and ask about the vets and if they are used to working on small dogs most of them are experienced with all types of animals. |

| I had my cocker spaniel done with our local SPCA which has the SNIP program through PETA and it was done the same day , and for 35 dollars.Plus you are able to get other meds ,by a vet there if needed for a discount. The animal must be current on all shots with proof. They were very good and I was pleased with how professional and caring they were.

| in Cook County (the county where Chicago is located) they have spay/neutering months where you file a claim and the county reimburses you so your spay/neuter costs $100. For example, if your vet charges you $194, you send in your claim form and get $94 back. I would not hesitate to bring your puppy to an animal shelter for the surgery. Having dealt with them and obtaining pets from shelters, I trust them completely. Also, many vets will do it very cheaply because they want to control the pet population.

| i went through a low cost clinic and it costed $35 for toby's neuter. The vet was wonderful and the "nurses???" were great. they all loved toby and were very concerned and had great senses of humour. When i picked him up the owner of the place walked be back personally to get my baby out of his cage, he was laughing because toby didnt make a peep until he saw me, and then he was laying it on thick like he was in pain . also the owner of teh esltablishment gave me a great deal on everything, the neuter was $35 and then i got 7 months of advantage AND a micrchip put in. (so that added to the cost, but he was super nice, he gave me the microchip free, and a month of advantage free).... go to teh facility and talk to the staff there to gage whether you are comfortable getting youre baby fixed at their facility. |

| Got an UPDATE!! So I've been researching pretty much all day on my options of neutering Mason and I came across a website of an organization called Friends of Animals. You can buy certificates for spaying/neutering (prices vary by gender and type of pet) and they have a list of all participating veterinarians in your area. And guess what, I found my vet on the list !! So I called my vet, asked them if they currently participate in the "spaying/neutering program" of Friends of Animals, and they said yes. So all I have to pay is $54 for the surgery (well, and $65 for pre-anesthetic bloodwork which I will definitely do for Mason). It's a little disturbning to know that this morning, I was about to pay $340 and now I am paying $119 for the same surgery, by the same vet, at the same clinic!! |

Hi Guys, Just wondering if I can be put at ease, Cody was Neutered yesterday which he's fine now =) but after looking at his surgery I noticed that in the small insicion made by the vet a small gap was left open and at the other end it was stitched is the gapping normal it shows no blood or signs that it was stitched and he lost the stiching. It was to late when I noticed and the vet. was closed, vet is open 7 days a week but today it's Easter so I dont know if it would open till tommorrow.
