Question Cheap Spaying/Neutering Services

So time has come for Mason to get neutered. I have been reading about local shelters/organizations providing spaying/neutering services for cheap (around $50) offered by licensed vets. From what I read, local vets volunteer their time to spay/neuter pets that otherwise do not get fixed due to high costs of these sugeries.

My vet is charging $340 for the surgery and I am contemplating whether to take Mason to a local shelter to get fixed. Of course I am concerned about safety and quality of surgery offered at such location and don't know what to do!

What do you all think? Has anyone had their baby fixed at a shelter or an organization? Do you think this might be a bad idea? HELP!
