| Stool with lots of GEL...Need help Hi, I am so tired. My Angel had diarrhea and vomiting. I took her to the vet and got medication [flagyl] and peptic pills. Gave the meds for 7 days and the pills for 5 days. The vomiting stopped but the diarrhea persisted. I was feeding her as the vet recommended : Chicken with rice. I then started giving her sweet potato chicken & rice and the diarrhea started to resolve. I got a few weeks of excellent stools. She was tested for parasites and the test showed she had no parasites. The vet said there was no obstruction. I kept her on the chick, sweet pot, rice diet as per my vet and it did work until yesterday. Yesterday I had to go to the hospital. My dad was in the hospital again and she overheard me arguing with someone on the phone regarding my dad's care. I was gone for 11 hours because my dad was in a hospital an hour from my home and he did not want me to leave him. He is very sick. Her stool in the morning was great! But after I fed her I saw her run to the wee pad and she defecated more then one stool and one was with so much mucus/slime. The slime was clear and yellow and looked like gobs of mucus. I was horrified. I fed her the same thing. My dad is on contact precautions at the hospital and I am careful to glove up and gown up when there. I do not know if the stress affected her or if I brought something home to her. I am exhausted. Her bought of diarrhea was so hard to get rid of and I had to cut down the hours I spent with my father to stay with her. {I was spending long hours away from her to be with my sick dad and I live alone, so my Angel was alone a lot}. Also I am under so much stress and I wonder if she is picking up on it. Can someone advise? I was going to start Angel on heartworm meds. but now I have to call the vet sometime today to let her know what is going on. Again, she tested negative for parasites so I am dumbfounded at this point and am concerned the stress may be causing a condition in my Angel. I just don't know what to do. I have a brother who will absolutely not work with me to divide our time with dad. He always has something to do. It has been tough and has been going on now for over 7 months. Please advise. Any of your thoughts would be very much appreciated. My Angel is the sweetest dog in the world. Thank you. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you ever tried feeding her a different protein than the chicken, or is it always chicken? I'd be getting curious to try a different protein. I had a similar prob when Marcel was a puppy...he had giardia, which can be a disaster for puppy's GI system longer term. Sure enough, he had diarrhea / mucus / gel poops for 4 mths and no vet could solve it. I finally and desperately contacted a canine nutritionist and she put Marcel on a whitefish diet and *bam*, he had normal poos within 2 days - I literally CRIED. It never recurred again. I fed him the fish diet for about 1 month, and then I switched to pre-made raw (Primal or Nature's Variety). The fish diet is any whitefish, potato, and green beans.

| Thanks Wylie's Mom! I appreciate your sharing. We r getting normal stools so far..her condition seems to be stress related. I may give her home cooked diet in future. Thanks again |

| I'm actually going through this now. I came home from work yesterday and Dutch had runny and bloody stools with mucous. Thankfully she isn't vomiting. She has vet appointment this evening. What a mess. I wish I had taken of picture of it to show my vet but it was so gross I immediately cleaned it up. Poor baby....At least she was able to make it to her potty pad . |

| My Yorkie, Abby, has finally been diagnosed and treatment has started. She has lymphanglectasia which is a Yorkie genetic disease. She is on a low fat intestional dog food, prednisone and cyclosporine. Already her stools are better. Her B12 was low because of the absorption problem, so needs weekly B12 shots until proper range is met. Eventually she will be weened off the prednisone, but will have to continue the atopica and low fat intestional food long term. So relieved. I had never heard of this before. Wish that I had known about it. |

| Daisy had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Her poo was soft and had a lot of that gel in it. The vet kept giving her something to aid digestion and told us to keep her on white rice and chicken. This went on for two or three months. In sheer frustration I finally took her off the chicken diet and it cleared right up.

| The kind of stool you describe sometimes occurs when a dog has had too much fat in it's diet. There is no way someone else could have fed her something or she could have nabbed something she is not supposed to have? Someone mentioned Giardia and it does sound a little like that kind of symptom. The thing with tGiarida is that they can get reinfected by simply stepping on the stool or where the stool has been. Does your dog go out walking with you or could she have been exposed to another dog? Did you vet say if she tested specifically for Giardia? |

| Thanks for the imput My Yorker is an indoor dog mostly and when I walk her outside it is usually at shopping centers. My mom has a dog that I am in contact with but since my mom lets her dog out I do not let my dog play with her....once I did and my dog got a tick. |
