| Hi, and congrats on your adoption of Peanut. I love the Yorkie breed and they can be a little of both. I do put my girls up when young children are in the house. Honestly, they don't like all that action. I think if you have a lot of time and patience and maybe a dog trainer, things can get better with young children. |

| yorkie temperment Hi! My Lexi is 1 year old and she is not snappy at children, she just lays beside me when kids are around, she gives kisses to my new niece and nephew, very loving but she is yappy and I'm still working on that. |

| Hi Dougie, Peanut is adorable! Congratulations on the new addition to your life. As indicated above, Yorkies vary in personality. They tend to be high energy. Exercise helps with behavior and training. My Max grows a little yappy when he has pent up energy. My Yorkies have not had a lot of exposure to children, so they don't like that kids are fast moving and often noisy. I let kids pet Max while I am holding him, but I hold Teddy back. Teddy doesn't like when kids put their hands over his head, or play with his topknot. As Lisa indicated, lots of patience and training could help Peanut accept children. Also, the children need to be trained for how to behave appropriately around a dog.

| My yorkies are good with children, but one of them went into a terrible depression when her daddy moved away for a new job and we were all separated for 3 months before moving the family (she is daddy's girl!). She has never really been completely the same since. She will snap at anyone she doesn't know or anyone outside the family since we moved here. She is still fine with everyone she knew before and is fine with our kids and grandkids, but we have to keep her away from the neighbor kids now.

| Through the years I have had five Yorkies. They were socialized early, and they were around a lot of people through daily walking. Most small dogs are leary about the fast movements of children, but all of my Yorkies loved children, especially babies. Katie wags her tail whenever she sees children and loves to give them kisses.

| Congratulations on Peanut, I am on my 5th yorkie, although LOL should I say 4.5 since Lola is a yorkie mix. Two of mine were high strung, high energy yappers and not good with children or other dogs. In fact 30 years ago when I did not know much better I had my first yorkie debarked because he was such a loud mouth II would never do this to a dog again) My other two and now Lola were much sweeter and two of the three loved children. One was afraid of children but she was the most laid back of any of them so she never nipped she just tried to stay away. Like the others have said there are a variety of personalities within the breed but they do tend to be more spirited, high energy and a little on the barky side. While I do think some of it is in how they are raised (and of course if they have been abused) I believe more of it is in their genes, because I raised all my 5 the same yet each had very different traits that were with them their whole lives. You did not mention how he was with other dogs, but chances are if he is snappy with young children he might not be that crazy about other dogs, so you will really need to protect him from himself, even when encountering dogs that owners say are friendly if your dog snaps first the other dog my react by biting.

| I've only got Yumi so not a whole lot of experience, but she pretty much loves everyone. she doesn't let anyone catch her, but she bounces and wags around them in circles, stands up on her hind legs a couple feet away and hops up and down, general crazy yuminess and if i hold her to let people in she runs in my arms trying to get to them. Yuri isn't a yorkie but he's our mean dog. He just doesn't like strangers. He's never bit a child, but he doesn't like them in general. Over time he gets used to kids individually. He's even happy to see kids he know well, but he's more on edge when they're here. He was really only around 1 kid growing up, and multiple kids together is a whole different level of crazy. Our biggest issue is getting him used to a child in the 1st place. Most adults you can tell how to act with him, kids are much harder. |
