| 5 weeks in heat My Yorkie has been in heat for 5 weeks and 1 day. I called the vet last week, but my regular wasn't in and she recommended immediate spay. When I asked why she said due to anemia. I then asked if we could do a blood test to see if that was the case before we opted for the more risky surgery of spaying while in heat. We did that and she was fine. However another week has passed so I took her to my regular vet today and she said 5 weeks is abnormal, but she checked her over good and she seems to be physically fine. She advised we give it another week before we discuss spaying while in heat. By the way, I did have an appt to get her spayed, but she came into heat the week of the appointment. Her mammary glands have also gotten very full in the past couple days and the vet mentioned there is a chance she is going into false pregnancy. So I certainly will get her spayed as soon as it is safe to do so, in the meantime does anyone have experience with such a long heat and/or false pregnancy? |

| This is not medical advice. This is just what happened to Gracie. When she was about a year old she came into a long heat. (She was a rescue and we had already scheduled for a spay.) That turned into a false preg. (there was no contact with fertile males). Her teats swelled and even leaked fluid. Her vulva stayed puffy. After about a month of nesting behavior with toys, the heat and false preg. ended. Then she was spayed. Even after being spayed, once in awhile she gets into nesting mode and hides her toy babies in her crate, she fusses with them for a few days then stops.

| Thank you Teresa, I am a little bit of an over protective momma, I just wish my baby didn't have to go through this. The one thing the vet mentioned is that depression is possible, did you experience that at all? |

| Eevee is just ending a 6 week heat. A week ago I talked to her vet, who said that 6 weeks is the longest a heat can be normally, and he wouldn't be concerned unless it lasted longer than that. Her "peepee" (I don't even know what to call it) is almost completely back down to normal size, but her nipples are still very large. The vet said that he wouldn't want to spay her during her heat unless he had to because of the increased risk. I've researched it and they bleed more if they have surgery during a heat. The vet also said spaying during heat increased the risk of false pregnancy. I would not spay her during a heat unless I absolutely had to. She acted pretty much like she couldn't tell she was in heat. She licked her peepee a lot. That was about it. I kept a diaper on her during the bleeding, which lasted less than 2 weeks (don't remember exactly). Your vet mentioned anemia, are you saying she's been bleeding the whole 5 weeks? That sounds very odd and I would be worried. If she's stopped the bleeding and is just swollen, etc that sounds more normal. If she has stopped bleeding I can't imagine anemia would be an issue though. |

| Belle was in heat for 6 weeks last year. She was spotting on and off the whole time. We did have her spayed while she was still in heat as it seemed to be never ending and she was miserable. My vet said that her uterus was very swollen and vascular, the surgery took longer than a routine spay, but she did just fine. I hope everything goes well for your little girl.

| Yes she has been bleeding the entire 5 weeks. Every morning I get up and think today it will be over but there is blood all over her blankie. I can deal with the blood, but I just want to ensure she is okay. I guess I will give it another week like the vet suggested and see what happens. I can't wait to have her spayed, I never want her to go through this again. |
