| Is your baby microchipped? Get your dog microchipped! Ian isn't, but I want him to be. I was thinking that sedation is needed for this, but I'm not sure. If so, I wanted to wait to have it done during a procedure that required sedation, and have it done at the same time. Is it done without sedation? What are the side-affects? Thanks!!

| Raley is microchipped! I had it done when he was about 4 months old. No sedation needed and no side effects. On the other hand, my kids' both had their furbabies microchipped when they had their spay surgery at the age of 6 months! I highly recommend microchipping!

| No sedation is not necessary. I had my Biewer rechipped... her international chip wasn't reading at all. Maybe a little worse than a vaccine... but that's just the initial stick... no after effects. Infection is always a possibility, so just keep an eye on it for a month or so. The actual chips are even smaller now than when they first made them. I wouldn't combine it with another vaccine or a surgery though. But that's just me, lol.

| It is very similar to a vaccination with the exception that the needle is larger. It is so quick that by the time they might feel it, it is over! Our vet told us to give Raley ibuprofen that day. I did. The next day he was perfectly fine!

| Thank you...all of you for the quick response!!!! Great information! I assume this procedure should only be done with a vet?? The link I posted sounded like a good deal, but I would opt for going to a vet.

| It's perfectly fine to get it done at shelter events like in your link. The shelter I used to walk dogs at held events like that where they would offer services like rabies shots and microchipping to the public at a reduced/more affordable price. |

| I did not microchip, Choppa. Didn't think he would be in a position to be lost or stolen. As I type this, he is STOLEN! My new baby will be microchipped and not 'let out' in her own yard with privacy fence ever without me. I say chip them. I never thought I would be in this position. Can microchips be tracked or is it only if they are scanned at vet?

| Good morning everyone! Just thought I'd let you know what happens 'over here'!! Puppies are USUALLY microchipped at the same time as their initial vaccinations. It's a procedure that costs about £20, but is often done 'for free' along with the first vet check, jabs etc. A law is currently trying to be passed by our government, that ALL puppies have to be chipped - they'll probably get their way in the not too distant future.... It's rarely done under sedation - the needle used is only slightly larger than the vaccine needle. The chip itself is the size of a grain of rice, and is placed between the shoulder blades. I know all of this because I was watching, very, very closely!!!!! Sally + Harry x |

ZoE was microchipped at 6-7 months old, when she was spayed. She's had no ill-effects from it, but I can feel it under the skin by left shoulder blade. It literally feels like there is a single grain of rice stuck under there. Everytime ZoE has a scheduled procedure done at the Vet (yearly check-up, booster shot, etc.) I ask that she be scanned to verify that it's still scanning, as microchips can migrate and then be more difficult to read.

| A lot of breeders now do their own microchipping....it is a simple procedure that only involves a large bore needle....these needles are soooooooooo very sharp, they slip right into the area they need to be positioned for correct placement of the microchip! Not a big deal at all! Like ANY other injection site, you just observe the area a couple of days for any signs of infection. |

| Jaeger was chipped-we live in a high volume area (townhouses) and while yorkie owners can tell he isn't purebred, he's yorkie looking enough that people always call him that, and I while I didn't think he'd be straight dognapped, that if he got loose, he was more vulnerable. I had both him and my mom's first dog (back when they were newer and cost more, 4 years or so ago) chipped, neither without sedation, and they were fine. |
