Can microchips be tracked or is it only if they are scanned at vet?

This site gives an overview of GPS products. The GPS for kitties can be used on small dogs. GPS for Dogs|Tracking collars

Microchips cannot be tracked at this point in time. They do make collars that pets can wear that are trackable.

I microchip puppies, and all my dogs I purchased were microchipped. How-ever it is a very good idea to make sure the chip is still scanning. "note to self" next vet visit have them scan to confirm.

And if it isn't picked up in the neck area, have the vet scan the whole body... they can migrate... Tink has two chips now, one at her shoulders and one near her lower ribs.

Jaxson was microchipped at 12 weeks & he was just fine!

Suzi and Miely are microchipped, the vet told me the size of the chip is about the same as a grain of rice. The vet took them one at a time in the back, and they were back within a couple of minutes. It is important to know what type of microchip services they use, my vet uses Homeagain, I completed their regerstration online. Now I recieve notices every time their is a missing dog in my area that uses homeagain. i was given a tag for each dog too. The cost is $35 at the vet , worth every penny. They are also city licensed perm. because they are service dogs, they have a purple tag for that, and i will not have to ever pay again for the city. I did not have to pay at all. PLus they have their rabies tag , so they are all done .

I have 4 little ones and they are all micro chipped. Recently, I have been concerned, and have read that they can slip or move. Hope it's not a high percentage. As far as the scanning goes, it is a peace of mind, but the person who takes them MUST take them to have them scanned. There are many people that will not do that, if they decide to keep them. I don't think the vets will do it unless they are asked.

I had Couver and Khloe microchipped while they were under for their spay surgery. I occasionally have my vet scan them to make sure the chips are still working.

My cats, Tiger and Beau were both microchipped when they were just a couple months old at the shelter when we adopted them. They were not sedated and had no problem.

IMHO I would use a vet. Dori was chipped during her spay appointment. We have scannable bar codes in her file and on my keychain. My vet said to use the system preferred by the local authorities, which is AVID.

BTW...there should be an app for this! There is GPS for everything else, why not for our furbabies!?

All the dogs I imported were re-chipped because their international chips could not be read.

My puppies are all microchipped before they go to their new owners.

One of my dogs came chipped and the other will never be.
Personal preference.
My boy's chip is sitting right next to his spine right now. I'm sure it is perfectly fine since they are inserted over the spine area anyway. I just don't like it there, nor do I like to feel how it is sitting/rubbing there.

There are so many chips and scanners now. Most vets don't check for chips either. It is not a bad system, but is not a great one either.

Sorry to hear that in your area, the vets don't check for chips. I lived about an hour south of there for 10 years (near Toledo, but in Michigan) and every time I took a stray dog to the vets, the first thing they said was "lets scan it and see if its chipped."

Vets here check for chips. Mostly because he have 3 military bases here, and you are required to chip your pet and live on post, and some pets are stolen or re homed a lot here.

I had Corky chipped, at micro-chipping clinic held by a local vets office, cost 20 bucks. You never knew anything happened to him.

This is why I personally would never buy from a breeder that microchips before selling. The choice of which chip do use should be mine as the owner.

There are GPS collars available for dogs, but like most battery operated systems, it only works if the battery is charged.
