My furkids Donating Member | electric fence for yorkies? I DO NOT have an electric fence... My neighbor has a yorkie and is getting a shihtzu puppy soon....their yorkie is constantly running out of the house and into the road....they do tie him...but if they open the door he takes off...they want to install an electric fence....I'm not sure how I feel about this...We have 3 yorkies and really can't fence in the yard....this would be perfect but, again...not sure how I feel about "zapping" my furbutts....just want to know everyones thoughts on this.

| I'm not an advocate of electric or "invisible" fences. They do not protect small pups from predators coming into the yard. A chihuahua in my town was out in his yard protected only by an invisible fence when 2 roaming dogs came along and tore him to pieces. Also, some dogs figure out quickly that the zap only lasts a second. Once they are on the outside of the fence, they don't like to risk the zap to get back in. Third, trainer Victoria Stilwell has said on her show that there is medical evidence that the shock of devices like invisible fences has detrimental effects on the heart and nervous system. Most fences give off a "warning" sound before the shock, but I know my guys would go for the full shock if they saw something they wanted to go after. Many people have invisible fences in my neighborhood and there is only 1 that I really trust. The others have become lax about putting the collars on the dogs, changing the batteries, checking the systems periodically.

| PetSafe does sell a little dog electric fence. Not sure who else does. PetSafe PIG00-10773 Little Dog In-Ground Fence with Collar - Electric Dog Fences Cozy my mama dog is + 16 pounds but is trained to a wireless electric fence by PetSafe when she was 10 pounds. The company stated over 7 pounds which she was and still is. She is fine with it. Never bothered her. I doesn't use it at my parents house though anymore because she harresses their new neighbor who is afraid of dogs so leash for her there. Everyday is different. I know she is the only yorkie of mine who is appropriate for it. Roxy and Lucy are very obedient. Zoey is a runner but is a timid personality.

| For what it is worth before selling a dog or puppy, I refuse a sale to someone without a safe properly fenced yard. |

| I personally think its terrible and abuse. Also is does not keep other animals from getting in and attacking and killing your dogs. I have known dogs to take the shock and still get out. Sounds like your neighbors just need to do some training to teach there dog not to run out the door.

My furkids Donating Member | I agree with most of the comments....I don't believe it to be abusive as some people feel it is protecting their pet from getting out! I do know some people that have had their dogs run through the fence and not get back in...I too, agree that it doesn't stop other dogs, wild animals, from getting in and attacking the pet behind the fence. There isn't any way I can talk my neighbors out of installing this fence...they feel they are doing it to protect their pup...and as we ALL know these little furbtts can have a mind of their own..the little guy next door is only 9 months old...EXTREMELY hyper...he isn't neutered...yet....he is alone WAY too long during the day and is the only pet....They feel bringing in another pup will help to keep him company and burn off some of the energy....IMO...the reason why he is so hyper is because he IS in all day and into the night and when that door opens...it's like....WEEEEEEEEE! I'm out!!

| Wow- it sounds like your neighbor needs to do some training! Peanut use to bolt out of the door- He did that in his young days, probably like 1-2 I just worked with him and taught him just because the door is open doesn't mean you fly out of it!! He is really good now, I guess he is getting older and wiser at 4 People are so lazy now a days! I feel bad they are getting another puppy when they cant even train this one!

| I dont think its abusive but I do think its laziness and unnecessary when there are other options like training or putting a gate by the door if they just arent going to train their dog

| No Way. I know the rescue group I volunteer with, we will not adopt to people with Electric Fences.

My furkids Donating Member | agree! now that we have 3!!! It's a little harder to keep them away from the door when someone comes in or goes out...they way our living room is set up (and I very country) We are going to be putting up a picket fence gate so they cant get to the door...this will keep them safe and I think it will look good....

| I agree, No on the electric fence. I have heard too many horror stories of larger dogs killing the little ones in the E fence as the little one will not run past the E fence for fear of being zapped & ends up dead because of it & the same goes with tying a dog out, it can not escape aggressive dogs so just not safe or fait. They need a real fence period. |

| I would never use an electric fence with any of my dogs. Other things will still be able to get in the yard as mentioned and the electric fences rarely works if there is something outside of the fence the dog really wants. There are so many safer options out there. A dog run is the first thing that comes to mind. My parents next door neighbor just got a shih tzu puppy and he took chicken wire and stapled it to post to make a safe area for his dog. The third thing I would try is training. I have a privacy fence around an acre of land. However we have trained everydog that they cannot go through the gate unless they are told. If someone such as the electric company comes to the house to read the meter and they leave the gate open I want my dogs to know not to go out it. |
