Default Help me convince bf we need another yorkie!

YTers... I need your help! You all are so creative.... help me think of some convincing ways to get my boyfriend to say yes to another yorkie! Sophia really needs a brother/companion. Everytime I feel like he's about to yes... Sophia does something to make him say no (like growl at him... or need to go outside at that very moment lol)!

Mike said no to Sophia at first.... but now she has him wrapped around her little paw! She sleeps on his side of the bed, follows him around, and even falls asleep on his belly! His rationale is that he doesn't want to go through the potty training again and enjoys getting a full nights sleep.

I said we could get a boy who's a little older... maybe 4 or 5 months... and I even offered to pay for the little bugger... AND to take him out at nights I thought I was being generous.... he still said no. I wish Sophia could talk... he wouldn't say no to her!

Now that's smart. I wish I thought of that before I tried asking... now I'll feel bad!

How old is Sophia? Getting a second will be a lot more work...but there are alot of benefits. You should look at this thread - Rachael and Sadie does a great job highlighting the pros and cons of 1 vs. two. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-have-one.html

Now onto having two. I think it is smart to get one that is the opposite sex and 4 or 5 months old. My Teddy turned a year old in December and in January we got Piper she was a little over 4 months. Opposite sex works great for us. Also, because she was older...she came very socialized. Teddy did not like her very much day 1 -3 but by day 4 they were best buddies and now only a month later they love cuddling. It took me a while to convince my fiance to get a second. But he now admits it was sooo worth it! They really tire each other out and they always have someone to play with

Good Luck!!

Sophia is 11 months. That's an excellent thread, thanks for linking me to it. It definitely mentions things that I didn't think about. She is SUCH a social butterfly. His parents have a lab, and Sophia just adores him. Her favorite place to go is petsmart and petco because she just loves the other dogs! One of the other problems I'm having trouble convincing him about is the time. We're both students. We have time to play with Sophia, it's just not always when she wants to play. So, I think it would be better if she had a companion to play with when we're not able to entertain her. But he said "Sarah, they won't always be playing with each other. Instead of me playing with one dog, I'd be playing with two!".

I wouidnt get the yorkie without his blessing. That causes trust issues in a relationship and can cause resentment. A little bartering never hurt though.

I think it's better to get another dog when your first one is still fairly young. They adjust faster and they have each other for years to come.

Personally, no boyfriend would tell me i couldn't have a dog but that's just me. I lived with a husband that told me what I could and could not do for many years. Then he decided what he wanted and it wasn't his family.

If you can pay for the dog yourself and are determined to care for both of them yourself then it is your issue. If he is paying the majority of the bills then you have another issue. It is double the work to have two dogs but if you enjoy that sort of thing then it is worth it. If you are unsure of your future, like kids, where you will be living 5 years from now, etc I would wait until you are more settled.

Ok - if this helps. Everyone thought we were nuts getting a second. My job is crazy right now because my boss is on maternity leave. On top of that we are in the middle of planning a wedding. Things will always come up! So technically, I really don't think any time is a "good time"...there can always be an excuse. With that said, I pasted the pros and cons from that thread to show my fiance and I think it was one of the things that convinced him. I started talking to a breeder and getting all the info before approaching him. Once the breeder started sending pictures and I had all the facts it was much easier to convince my fiance. Trust me...the first few weeks might be tough and Sophia will probably be jealous. But with you wanting the opposite sex I think you will be totally fine. Just give her extra TLC. Also, right now is the ideal time to get a second...you want to get another when they are young ... the transition is SO MUCH EASIER. Teddy and Piper ALWAYS play together. And playing with 1 vs. 2 is fine. If we aren't able to play with them its ok because they have each other. Let me know if you have any questions. Teddy was 11 months old when we got Piper and it worked out great for us. I am happy to help!

The age definitely is why I want to get one now. We live together and split everything 50/50. He helps out with Sophia a lot, so he'd really have to be in on it too, because i'd need some help with a new addition.

Thanks, I think I really have to stress the importance of her being young. And you're right, things will always come up! I already have my eye on one... I showed him the picture last night and he said "he is REALLY cute..but we can't". My problem is that I get my heart set and I don't take "no" for an answer very easily. I know it's only a matter of time until we get a 2nd one, I just really want it to be while she's young.

My logic was 'how would you like to be the only human in a dog family?'.

That said, it was tough the first week. They fought constantly! I did have a few 'what have I done!!' moments! I was in constant fear that Holly would hurt Hunny bc of the size difference. Turned out Hunny is the alpha! She bosses Holly around the house. They love to play now. So cute together!!
