Tiny Mator "concerns"

We finally picked up our little man this weekend. He was much tinier than I had thought, and the pictured showed. We now have doubts he should have left his mama yet, at barely 6 weeks old, but we drove three hours and didnt realize until after reading, etc yesterday/today that the standard it to not sell these tiny pups until much later weeks.

Please tell me if there is anything else I can be doing for him. He weighs 1 lb 1 oz (as of Friday at "breeders" vet, which I verified he had a complete health exam personally with them on the phone Saturday). He is a morkie (yorkie/maltese). He is scheduled to go to my vet next weekend (unless the need arises sooner obviously).

FOOD:He is eating puppy chow made mushy with warm water then microwaved and cooled before feeding, and is drinking water well,

ACTIVITY: he is peeing and pooping, playing with toys, chewing on toys, following our yorkie around and playing with him (with verey close supervision by us), sleeps 20min-1hr or so after about 15-20 minutes of activeness. He has food/water available at all times, and we remind him to eat every couple hours minimum. He has several snuggle blankets he curls up in, in his crate, and another in his little bed. He also gets held lots.

He seems happy, but is just so tiny Im concerned. He does whine when left alone in(but sleeps happily in his crate, even goes into it himself and curls up to sleep).

Last night, his first night home he slept from 930-230, 250-415, 430-6, then 6-7ish with me in bed...pretty well i think. When he woke I put him on his pee pad and he peed immediately once, offered food, he always ate/drank..then almost promptly went back to sleep...occasionally tried to play, i calmed him and put back to sleep in crate/blankets.

Anything Im missing/should look further into?

Wow, poor baby is way to young to be away from his mommy. Make sure he stays warm and only has short play periods with lots of sleep time. He is very young and will need a lot of sleep. Good luck.

Our new baby is very tiny but very healthy...that being said 6 weeks is to young even for a larger baby so watch carefully for hypoglycemia and I would get a good puppy food (soft) to feed her 3 times a day till she is a little older.

purchase some Nutrical and give him a bit if he seems sluggesh at all (besides calling your vet imediately), i didn't get my baby until he was 12. sounds like you are taking extra care and that is fantastic. don't leave him alone if you can't help it. good luck! and he's a cutie.

Please don't take this the wrong way; but, I have to ask, you have been on this forum for almost 3 years, drove 3 hours to pick up a pup that is less than 6 weeks old and yet had no idea he was to young to be away from his mother?

Okay, now because he is waaayyy to young to be away from his mother, despite what THEIR vet said, I would get this little one into YOUR vet pronto, I would go over all your concerns and get all the input you can from them and have them give him a good once over, put on a proper diet and supplements etc., This pup needs to be continuously monitored by you until he is atleast 10 weeks old..I would journal him daily.

Sounds like you are taking very good care of him... Yes, he should have remained with his mother for 6 more weeks, especially at that weight... But what's done is done. Definately get some nutrical soon!! I suggest a collar with a cat bell attatched... We have a tiny one as well (2 1/2 pounds) and also a new puppy.... They both wear bells so we can be alerted when they are running around. Also, be very careful having him around your yorkie as he is so tiny, innocent play could harm him in an instant!! Yes I have been a member for about three years, when we got our first yorkie. I was told the puppy I was buying was born Dec 9, which made him 10+ weeks when I picked him up, which I thought was reasonable from reading on here, I received pictures daily over the last three weeks and asked all the questions I thought were correct, There is one puppy left right now out of a littler of four, all have been sold....so Im not the only one that was misled into taking home this sweet too young pup.

I also had all the supplies I read about here and read stories on. I was not prepared for normal size 10 week old morkies, as Ive never been around morkie puppies before, and both his parents were very little so I didnt think too much of it when i saw the litter upon arrival. In hind sight I should have questioned the birthday further, but had no real reason to at the time. Since getting him home I have called her vet, who told me birthday on file was Jan 9, and was shocked she had let the litter go already, he was under the impression the "breeder" (i use the term loosly) was returning the following week for their 6 weeks shots to get started and their health certificates, etc. He had performed a full exam on the pups the day before.

I feel dumb, but theres nothing I can do now, as giving him back isnt an option due to distance, her ill regard to his health/well being to begin with letting them go so early, etc.

So I will continue to do my best and help this little guy get bigger by loving and caring for him like he should be.

Thanks so everyone who has given workds of advice/affirmation on the care we are giving him thus far. I appreciate the support of this forum, despite my stupidity.

Little man is doing well today, home with my husband I had to work. He slept very good last night, getting up a few times to go pee and eat a little.

I wouldn't microwave his food...I'd heat it in a water bath. Microwaving is well published to be avoided for infant formula...a 6-week-old puppy qualifies. There is ample research about microwave damage to food...I'd want him to get the full nutritional value.

Keep feeding him every 3 to 4 hrs and dont let him wear down because of too much activity

If it were me, I'd have him back with his momma. He is way too young and small. A three hour drive would be with it to ensure he is getting what he needs to survive.

If you are not going to do that, then you need to get him into your vets ASAP. He needs to be treated like a puppy that has been orphaned. The vet can give you all the info on what to do.

Grrrrr, greeders like this frustrate me.

ok thanks...i knew about breast milk in humans, didnt even think about it for pups. I will just heat the water to be safe. Thanks.

Believe me I have thought about it, but the woman ( i refuse to call her breeder anymore) had them separated from their mother already. They were crated, only the puppies. She said the mother stopped feeding them over a week ago...and they had been separated since then. I am so sad, even though hes doing well.

I texted breeder asking about the little scabs on him we have noticed...she said she didnt notice them, and that they had frontline already and none of her 11 dogs has fleas! OMG what did I get myself into with this nutsy lady! I think she probably just told me about the front line since she thought thats what I wanted to hear. And IF she did put it on him no wonder his little skin is scabby on his back (my opinion but i have no idea)! Poor little one.

We are going to the vet today.
