| What's Your Story? Do You have a great story to tell of how you first became a Yorkie owner? Well I'm not sure if mine is great but I would like to share it. I went through some ups and downs and learned alot along the way. My 2 daughters wanted to get a yorkie for a while but we had heard they were not good pets for small children. They were 5 & 7 at the time. My sister in-law has a yorkie that she bought for her terminally ill teenage daughter. We would dog sit for her at times and my daughters were actually really good with her. She's around 7-8 lbs and a very calm dog. Sadly my sweet neice passed away and at one point my sis in law asked if we wanted keep the dog but at the time my husband said no. As my mother started getting closer to retirement age she began to get lonely living alone and she started to consider getting a yorkie to be her companion. That was exciting for me and my girls because we would have another yorkie in the family! Sadly though my mom grew ill and within 2 months of her being diagnosed with cancer, she died. She was my very best friend and a part of me died when I lost her. I suddenly had an extreme urgency to find a yorkie that I could love just like my mother wanted to do. I searched for breeders in my area but $2000-$3200 was way out of my budget. I looked on craigslist, puppyfind, ebay classifieds, you name I was searching. I read all I could about the breed so I would know what to expect when I finally did find one. I spoke with several breeders and the ones that I really liked although their price was too high all wanted us to come to their home and meet us and our girls and for us to interact with the pups. Well I found one "breeder" close in my area that had just sold her last pup but she would keep my number for when she had another litter by her other female. Meanwhile, I kept looking, but there was always something that just didn't work out. I found a woman in MO who was willing to take monthly payments and would ship the puppy to me here in California, but something just didn't sit well with me. So I researched her and read about half a dozen horror stories from people who bought pups from her. (That was my first time learning of puppy mills) Fast forward to May 2011. The "breeder" who kept my number called me to say her female was due In June and that I could have the pick of the litter. I read NO horror stories about her so I was glad!! We went to her home and met her and her mother and the beautiful dogs including 1 of the pups from the last litter that she kept. She had the papers for her female and her mothers male out on the table for us to look over. They were the nicest people! $799 for males & $899 for females was the price. I gave a small deposit since the litter wasn't born yet. I signed a contract and couldn't have been any happier!! The next month I emailed her and she didn't respond. I called and her number was changed, went to her home and while the dogs barked and barked no one would answer I was angry, sad, embarrassed. I decided to give up on finding a dog for a while. Then 1 month later my husband came home to tell me his sister's yorkie just gave birth to 6 babies! I think I might have shed a tear or two. I was going to get a yorkie from my sweet neice's yorkie. It felt just perfect because it was family. I didn't know anything about back yard breeders either at that time, but that is what my little Ladybug is a prodcut of. That's also why her tail isn't docked. Although my sis in law said she wouldn't breed again because it is entirely too much work going back and forth to the vet, deworming, and immunizations I am so very glad that I got my Ladybug. I feel as though my long wait and the ups and downs trying to find the right yorkie was for a reason. My girsl are now 8 & 10 and I have the perfect yorkie......My Ladybug

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Great story! I got my first yorkie back in 1970 after I graduated HS. I loved long hair on everything and everybody lol. I wanted an Afghan hound and my parents said no way. I talked them in to a Yorkie. My Dad RIP was an animal lover and we were pretty good at talking him into getting us pets, from horn toads to a marmoset monkey. So I saw an add in the paper for a male yorkie puppy. I took my last 50.00 out of the bank and my Dad drove me a few towns over to "look" at the puppy. I had zero experience in purchasing a dog. So when they brought out Karma I fell in love not bothering to notice he was pretty big for a yorkie pup. Well Karma grew to 18 lbs, had a shorter curly coat and floppy ears. He was the toughest little dog in the neighborhood. I moved out when he was 5 and my Dad was so attached to him I left him with my parents. Karma passed at 13 years of age and it was the first time I had seen my Dad cry. He built a little shrine to Karma on his dresser. Until the day he died, 41 years after Karma came in to our lives he still talked about Karma. He would always laugh at his antics like peeing on my BF suede shoes one time when he came over, taking on the white German Shepherd next door ( a gentle giant), and wiggly his butt in between my Mom and Dad when they were sitting on the couch. After I moved out I lasted one year without a yorkie and went an got Zorro. Ever since I've been hooked on Yorkies.

| Thank you for sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear about your losses. I too have lost a loved one to cancer (cousin at age 38) and I lost both of my parents who died in a car accident when I was 23. There is nothing harder than losing someone you love. As for my story, I wasn't looking for another dog as I already had a dog and a daughter with a serious illness that was taking most of my time. My oldest daughter however really wanted a dog of her own and decided on a Yorkie. We researched the breed together and she found a terrific breeder located in Toronto. So we went to the breeders and after a lenghty interview to make sure that she was going to a good home Chloe was hers. Well of course I fell in love with the little girl. My DD was spending a great deal of time out of the house. We live in a more rural area without bus access and she was spending a few days and nights a week with friends in the city. So I was caring for Chloe and every day becoming more and more attached. I became very sick with a bad virus and was in bed for over a week. Chloe was by my side the whole time. I was told that she would go out for a pottie break, grab some food and water and then was right back in bed with me. Once I was up and feeling a bit better my DD came into my room to tell me that Chloe was now my dog. She said that there was no way that she could take Chloe away from me. She said that it would be cruel to me and to Chloe. I actually started to cry. It was such an amazing gift. My DD spent a HUGE amount of money on Chloe and wouldn't even allow me to offer to give her a dime. Chloe is now a little over two years old and I cant begin to express how loved she is or how much joy she brings to my life. I have never had a bond with an animal like I have with her. She waits for me at the front door when I am gone and follows me all around the house. She is funny and spunky with a wonderful personality and is so affectionate. I feel blessed to have such a great little dog! So thats how I came to be the proud mommy of a sweet little Yorkie. I don't know if it qualifies as a great one but my daughters act of incredible kindness sure made me feel great Last edited by Tina21; 01-04-2012 at 06:41 PM. Reason: error in grammer :) |

| My husband and I married in November of 2006 and by the middle of January I found out I was pregnant, but miscarried shortly after finding out. DH was supposed to deploy for Iraq during that time frame as well, but thankfully a recent injury ended up keeping him home, but we were really unsure what was happening with his deployment at that same time. I was devastated by the miscarriage, my mom was practically on her deathbed (she recovered, thank God), and DH's birthday was coming up in February. I asked DH what he wanted for his birthday and he said he wanted a dog. We had kind of mentioned it before, but hadn't talked seriously about it. He said he felt that having a dog would be better for us than having a baby at this point in time in our lives and maybe having something to care for would help me heal from our loss, as well as help my mom recover after she returned home from being in ICU for almost 3 moths. I said okay and reminded him we couldn't have a large dog knowing his favorite breed is a German Shepard. He said he knew that and when I asked him what breed he was thinking about he said he wanted a yorkie... my exact words were "You want a WHAT?!" I had been raised around large dogs only and always thought of yorkies as little fru-fru prissy dogs. I wanted anything BUT a yorkie. I looked at everything and tried to persuade him from a yorkie, but we found little Chippy and I fell in love. Six months later I get a phone call from a good friend of mine who told me that her mom's groomer has a yorkie that really needed a home as he's been bounced from place to place to place. She took him in only to find him an appropriate home as the original caregiver was wheelchair bound and could not care for him. I called the groomer the next day and the day after that brought Smokey home with us. I wouldn't change or trade my boys for the world. I love them beyond words.

| Ashley V, I'm so sorry for your loss. But I am so happy that you have 2 fur babies to love. I also believe that these little love bugs can help you heal. I know Ladybug will NEVER take the place of my dear mother, but she has given me a little more happiness since I lost my mother. When I'm feeling down it's like she kinda knows I need her to cuddle with me.

YT 3000 Club Member | This is my story chester is my first yorkie and how he came about was I was going through a very bad depression and lifes stuff back in 2002 and I started seeing a counselor in march of 2002. She called me at home on the phone one day in october and said I want you to do some research and I said on what and she said on what kind of dog you need to get and I said what. I always had dogs growing up and I loved animals and I did not want to have a dog and not be able to travel because it would not be fair to leave him or her behind. I done my several weeks of research and I wanted a small dog that was a cuddler and a dog that did not shed. I got chester just before thanskgiving of 2002 from a gal who worked with me at the hospital. I first met him and he came running to me and it was love at first sight. He is now the most special thing and joy in my life and he goes thousands of miles with me on road trips every year, I love with every ounce of my being and he is so spoiled imagine that. He is now going to be my service dog for my ptsd. I wanted a 6 lb dog and now he is around 10 lbs, my studly boy, just more to love |
