| If you only have $400 to spend on a puppy, I would wait and save up some more. When you get the puppy, you have to take it to the vet, which can run you $50-100 just for the first trip. Then within 2-3 months you will need to get them fixed, which can run to $250. Plus new toys and bedding, if you're like me, will be ALOT of $$$. Then food every week, or if she/he gets sick. It's ALOT of money for a dog. And whether you believe your dog will get ill or not, it happens! Please think alot before adopting a new baby. If you've thought about it, and still want to adopt one. Check Puppies for Sale, Dogs for Sale and Dog Breeders they have tons of adoptable furbabies to look through. From 8 weeks to 8 years. I'm sure you'll find something for you. Good luck! Yorkies are such a joy.

| Not to mention heartworm medication, deworming, puppy shots if she hasn't had all of them, frontline plus, weewee pads, replacement of shoes that they chew up. Sorry! Just mentioning!!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | ^^^^^ Wonderful advice... I am glad you found out about the truth of pet stores and puppy mills. Even though those puppies may be in your price range now chances are you will end up paying quadruple that in vet bills. Puppy mill puppies are bred for only the dollar not for the quality of the breed... basically pet store puppies end up costing thousands more because you spend a lifetime trying to keep them healthy. Although, this my look like a cheaper alternative now.. it defiantly is not. Vet costs are mighty pricey.. I spent 440 on Taycie's spay. They also removed retained puppy teeth. I have spent well over a thousand in Taycie's first year and that is just basic vet care. Not to mention food, toys, beds, blankets, crates, heartguard, flea tick, collars, leash... and there is always the consideration of pet insurance, which for Taycie that is an extra 39 a month. My best advice would be to save for a quality puppy. In the long run you will be happier if you did. You can always look into rescues and always keep looking at the local shelter. Check daily or even hourly.. It is better to wait for the right dog then to rush into something..

| That $400 pet store puppy from a pup mill can turn into one sick $4,000 dog in no time at all...ponder that one please...SAVE UP YOU"LL NOT REGRET IT What vet are you going to that only costs you $50-$100 a pop? Seriously I'd either be scared to go there or it's so ridiculous cheap they don't like to advertise...my vet a basic office visit cost no other services included $110 flat fee...then if they pull out a thermometer...you getting the picture here...nevermind you are in the Bahamas...LOL yet another reason to want to live in Bali!

Yorkie Yakker | Thanks for all your advice this is very helpful, I have another question even if the pet store say that the dog have all there shots, netured and have a mirco chip, have all the papers and the first vet visit is free is this just a scam to get people in the door and also what is a good price for a healthy yorkie |

| The store just wants to sell dogs and I would not trust any health certificate from them. They buy largely from disreputable breeders who crank out puppies from little dogs who are often inbred, sick, living in their own waste often in crammed cages, infestated with parasites of all kinds and with little vet care. Most if not all of their puppies carry all of those problems in their bodies to their new home, protected the first few weeks only by the mother dog's indued immunity. If the genetic problems don't kill the pup at the mill or the store, very shortly after the dog is sold at only a few weeks of age, those problems begin to show up, though some wait for some time to manifest. Stores also buy pups from "reputable breeders" who don't run the traditional puppy mill but just turn their litter of dogs uncaringly over to the store to sell it to whatever person walks in with the money. The breeders or the store owners do not care what kind of person or family or lab the puppy goes to and what its little life is going to be like - they just want to make a quick sale and turn a profit off that little life. There is no consideration given to the puppy's inbred, genetic, looming problems and/or whether or not the person buying that dog will have the inclination or funds to treat the dog's medical problems. It is immoral dog-trafficking and those who buy from pet stores help to perpetuate the agony of all of those dogs - the puppies at the store and the parents back at the breeding site. If we all would nix buying from them as you did, they would go out of the dog-selling business. If you save up your money and buy a dog from a reputable breeder, you will 9 times out of 10 get a healthier, happier pet. Plus, keep calling reputable breeders looking for the occasional cheaper dog that they sometimes have to offer due to a non-health issue return or a dog they have decided to sell because it is not breedable, something like that. I hope that you can one day get your little Yorkie but if you can't afford it right now, a good, healthy Yorkie is certainly worth the wait! |

| Buy the breeder first then the dog...$2,000 average...but that guarentees nothing.

| There's some good advice on here, I'm a "broke" student and I thought a rescue was the best alternative for me, because the initial price would be cheaper, I couldn't find a rescue that was smaller than 40lb and I live in an apartment, so that was out. When I started looking at a breeder, I found a breeder who gave me a ton of stuff included, plus the dog and a health guarentee. It sounds really expensive to pay so much for a dog, but in the end you get a healthier dog and you don't need to pay all the vet bills, insurance covers any and all mishaps that Harley has. With a rescue they often have issues that require attention (not all cases), and well as those above me have said pet stores = HUGE VET BILLS and LOTS of PROBLEMS I would avoid the store because any reputable breeder would not sell their dogs that way. When I bought Harley I was questioned in detail before I had a chance to ask my own questions. My breeder wasn't even going to waste my time talking to me unless she knew she was comfortable selling me the dog. Hope this helps. If you do decide to go the rescue route (which I also think is great if you can afford the care) go to local dog expos etc to find the small dog rescues. There are tons out there, they are just hard to find sometime. Many rescues you can get pre-approved so that when something comes in you're good to go. Good luck, keep us posted.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I also look at like this not only when you purchase a pet story puppy the vet bills YES are usually extremely high.. but so is the heartbreak. For me watching a puppy going through health issues is always hard. They become your children, and your best friends. The emotional side of caring for sick puppy is extremely difficult and sometimes can end up being a life or death situation.

| You received some great advice. Seems as if Vets now charge more than Cardiac Surgeons! Trust me, I know. |

A responsible breeder will want you to come to their home. They want you to see their living conditions. They want you to meet the parents of the puppy, this alone will give you an idea of what your puppy will be like. But I would want to see this too! I hear too many stories where the so called "breeder" wouldn't allow this or wanted to meet you somewhere with the puppy and that is a big red flag in my book.
