| Does my Yorkie need a playmate? Hi everyone, I have a 6 1/2 month old female Yorkie named Trixie. When I first got her I was able to be home a lot but my circumstances have changed and now Trixie spends a lot more time by herself. My fiancé and I are seriously considering getting another small, high energy dog to keep her company and play with her. Most likely a male Maltese since they also shed very little (my fiancee has allergies). My question is when and how is the best time/way to do this? Should I wait until she is older and completely trained? Or the earlier the better? I would like them to be relatively close in age etc. I'm a first-time Yorkie mommy so this is new territory for me, I just want my baby to be happy. Any feedback, opinions etc would be great! Thanks! |

| If you do get another puppy (and even if you don't) please get Trixie spayed, and if you get a male puppy make sure you have him neutered. make sure your fiance isn't allergic to whatever puppy you get. (Someone recently got a Morkie and now is trying to rehome it because her son is allergic to it) so make 100% sure your fiance isn't going to be allergic to a new pet. When I got my very first Yorkie I got a second one only weeks later, they got on fine. I have also had dogs further apart that got along fine. It all depends on the dogs temperament. Oh and:

| I've had 3 Maltese and 3 Yorkies, and they are quite different in temperament. While Maltese are energetic as puppies, they don't tend to be as energetic as Yorkies. My Maltese's didn't have a dominant bone in their bodies, while terriers will try to run the house. Expect your Yorkie to be alpha, and the Maltese to be perfectly content being the "underdog." Terriers just have stronger personalities.

| Thanks @ ownedbyjezebel. I'm getting a lot of conflicting info about Maltese dogs but I have a feeling Trixie is going to be the boss lol. I'm going to be getting a male so we'll see how it goes. |

| I'm not so sure about switching breeds. If you already know that your husband can tolerate yorkies but not sure about maltese, it would be devastating to get a maltese, bond with it and then find that he couldn't tolerate it. Also, maltese are sometimes a bit laid back when they grow and you wouldn't want it to be bullied by your yorkie, you'd want it to hold its own. That said. I'd definitely get another dog. I'd get it as soon as you can, but at a time when you take a vacation or something so that you have enough time at home to be there for the acclimation. It will take some time for them to get used to each other. At first you may think you made a huge mistake. It takes awhile. Once they get used to each other they become fast friends. I have two and I cannot imagine what just one would do when we're gone for hours at a time. She would be bored silly. As it is, they play together and have ball without us. Still crazy to see us when we come home..

| I had a Maltese and have always had terrible allergies. He didn't impact them at all; though I realize we can all be affected differently. If your girl already has an 'alpha' personality; a more laid back companion might just be a good fit. Everyone will be happy with their role. Casper had tons of energy and could walk for miles and miles. Though - it is true he wasn't quite as 'everyday hyper' as my little Lucy Lu! She would love a little maltese to play with and boss around!

| I think the OP should contact the lady who has to rehome the Morkie.

| We have 2 Bassets 14 months old, a Shorkie 10 months old and a Yorkie 51/2 months old and everybody gets along fine. The Yorkie and the Shorkie have each other for company when we're out they are both non allergic dogs I made sure of that because I have asthma. The Bassets are locked in another room because we're afraid of their size. They love to play with the two little ones, but they are so big that I would never trust them alone because they weigh 50 lbs each as opposed to my Yorkie who is 5 lbs and my Shorkie who is 12 lbs. |
