I'm not so sure about switching breeds. If you already know that your husband can tolerate yorkies but not sure about maltese, it would be devastating to get a maltese, bond with it and then find that he couldn't tolerate it. Also, maltese are sometimes a bit laid back when they grow and you wouldn't want it to be bullied by your yorkie, you'd want it to hold its own.

That said. I'd definitely get another dog. I'd get it as soon as you can, but at a time when you take a vacation or something so that you have enough time at home to be there for the acclimation. It will take some time for them to get used to each other. At first you may think you made a huge mistake. It takes awhile. Once they get used to each other they become fast friends. I have two and I cannot imagine what just one would do when we're gone for hours at a time. She would be bored silly. As it is, they play together and have ball without us. Still crazy to see us when we come home..
