| Summer heat... How do you deal with the sumer heat? Do you do anything special for the babies? Last year, Kaji and I had AC. This year, we're not so lucky and we're starting to feel the heat. I wonder if there are things that I could do to help him cope with the heat. Any tips?

| We just had our AC installed a month ago, so we haven't had to tough out the heat... but I would suggest a kiddy pool and sprinkler to help keep him cool.

| I don't have a backyard, or anything. We live in a teeny apt.

| I leave the A/C on for my furry kids during the summer and heat during the winter, no one seem to be able to cope with either extremes here in my home. I do live near the ocean and some days i need a computer break during the day since i work from home few days , i go for a nice walk and sometimes it is very very hot, i put on the body harness and soak it with cold water, and bring a bottle with us , as long as i keep them soaked they do very well. Yorkies will do better than our shihtsus ... those need to be soaked from head to tail if we go out during a summer day and it is hot ... but we play safe and stay mostly in the shades of the trees... I also put ICE in their drinking water when they are free in the backyard ...they love it ! and of course some doggi ice-cream is also always welcome by them, but i keep it to a minimum ... i am not very fond of giving them many treats because of their teeth ... I am sure many more creative suggestions will come your way ... enjoy your summer I love summer ! XOXO

| I freeze water bottles and put them into their outside water buckets during the day. Most of the time they spend inside the house, being lazy under the AC though |

| What about a cooling vest? I just bought two of them for Holly. They dry on the outside and stay moist on the inside to keep their temp down.

No Longer a Member | I just put a fan out that blows right into the kitchen where he sleeps at and I make sure that they (dog and cat) get nice cold water in the morning before I leave. Plus the marble floors are usually cool to lay on (luckily) I see both him and the cat sprawled out with bellys full on the floor. I feel bad, but it really doesnt get that hot, probably about 80 during the day time. Why doesn't your apt have a/c? That really sucks! |

| I lost my job back in December, and moved back in with my parents. Kaji and I gave up living in a beautiful condo that we shared with my roomies and their furbabies. My parents live where my dad works as property manager, among other things. It's a building built in the 1950's or maybe older. Most apartments still had the cool boxes in the kitchens with the door in the hallway for the milkman to leave milk and cream in. The owner tells me, when she purchased it, the previous owners called this building the "honey moon inn" because newly weds took residence in this building when it was brand new. I love it because of it's history, but it doesn't have all the modern commodities. Usually, since my parent's apt is hidden away, it doesn't get much sun, so it doesn't heat up. Recently, the weather outside went from gloomy, and cool, to usual summer weather. It's the first time I've seen Kaji pant without exercise. He must be hot. So I'm wondering what I could do to help him cool off. I put ice in his water bowl and that's all I could think of. Kaji's not allowed in the kitchen if I'm not home. My mom uses chemical cleaners all the time, and I'm afraid he might get it on him and lick the toxins. I'd rather not have him in there because no one watches him. ANYWAY.... does anyone use cooling beds? How do they work?

What bugs me is it's warm in here with A/C - but if I drop it too low it never shuts off - I have 4 slim tower fans in my place & a ceiling fan in the bedroom - it does help - but with no A/C it would be unbearable I do add ice cubes to the girls water - both attack it when I drop them in so that may be an idea ps - the news just said we're looking at 107 heat index today. that sucks eggs

| I had a bed that you filled with water. It had some kind of gel (or something) inside that absorbed the water and it kept the dogs cool, that is until someone chewed a hole through it (Chester the bulldog). Worked great. I got it at petsmart. I think it was called Cool BedII. I also keep a fan blowing across the floor. I try to get away without ac so that people will spend more time outside (we have a pool). Had to put the ac on though, it got stinking hot and humid and the poor dogs were panting all the time.

| I have central air and keep it on 70 degrees but my one dog shaffer hates the heat, he pants and pants after a walk. I often need to give him a cool water down in the sink. I did buy the cooling bed it looks kinda like a mat and it gets cool when you sit on it, Shaffer didnt like it at all he hated to sit on it, and while he is about 10 pounds im not sure he was heavy enough to make it work. I also use these cooling wraps that go around his neck, I bought them at a pet store they are like a little bandana filled with this gel that you put in ice cold water for about 10 min, then they stay cool for about 1 hour, they really seemed to help shaffer i bought a few of them and switch them out. I know they also sell them for people but they did cool him down. They worked great on the 104 degree days when my house ac would not get down to 70 degrees. |

| Maybe you could fill hot water bottles with ice water and put them in his bed? I also saw kind of a head band that's filled with a gel, after soaking it in water it stays cool for a while. Maybe a small bandana soaked and refridgerated would work around his neck?

| What if you freeze soda bottles filled with water? Will take a while for them to warm up, you can wrap one in a towel and lay it in his bed, cheap cooling system, it may work, if he is hot he may choose to lay against it and if it is too cold for him he will stay away. I know it works with heat, if we put hot water bottles wrapped during winter they lay against it when they are cold, just like heating pads ... it may work other way around too... you could try and let us know , I would wrap in a towel to be safe and avoid cold burns. XOXO
