| Purchase or Rescue ?? First let me say I am all about rescue. I think it is one of the greatest gifts you can give to both you and your family not to mention the homeless pet. When we think of a getting a Yorkie, we all have that fantasy of that cute baby doll face with a short nose and perky little ears and cute little body. But what happens when you decide to adopt a yorkie and it has the opposite of all those traits? That is my dilemma now. I am at a crossroad. I love the picture perfect yorkies we all see in those magazines that make our hearts melt..but than there are those sweet little or big yorkies that the breeder didn't want or couldn't sell. The yorkie I am about to meet from a rescue is 7lbs at 6months, has large floppy ears, undocked tail, and may be a parti..but not sure. He has the sweetest face but is not what I was looking for. But I can't stop thinking about him. I am at a place now where I can afford to get that baby-faced yorkie..but am wondering if I should give up my fantasy for now and rescue? Has anyone adopted a puppy mill rescue or breeder surrender and has no regrets? Thanks!! sorry for such a long thread.. |

| I think they both have their advantages and disadvantages but you sound like you've fallen for this little guy. Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the un-standard yorkies like you describe. There's just somethin' about them I love! I say go for rescue

| Oh! you are sweet! Thank you for the quick reply! I have not met the little guy yet..but he has the sweetest eyes..ughh! Yes, the disadvantage is not knowing his history..healthwise, or if he is mixed with another breed.. I can only go by what the rescue group tells me. |

Well if you fall in love once you see him...get him! But he doesn't sound purebred to me. If a is what you want that fits the standard description, then IMO you should keep loooking. I waited for months before deciding on my baby, because I wanted one that looks like those in the magazines. She was worth the wait.

Lexi is now 10lbs, with floppy ears. I originally thought I'd regret not getting a younger puppy, but that quickly wore off. I always get asked if she is a mix, but honestly I wouldn't be happier and couldn't ask for a better dog. What I'm trying to say is that if you feel a bond with this puppy, then maybe he came into your life for a reason. If you gut is telling you otherwise, keep looking.

| I say follow your heart. Go look at this lil guy at the rescue and see how you feel. If there is a sudden connection then I would adopt. I believe everything happens for a reason and there is a reason you came across this dog. We have a jack-a-poo that is 6 yrs old and my daughter bought her from a pet store. There was just something about Daisy that made my 19 yr old daughter pick her. I never owned a small dog in my life. When my daughter moved to NC to be with her boyfriend (now husband) i she left Daisy with us and I will tell you she has been the love of our lives. She is a very sweet loving dog. Now 6 yrs later we got ourselves a Yorkie. I really think I will always have small dogs in the house thanks to Daisy and her sweetness. So go to the rescue and see if there is a connection if there is and you adopt you will be forever blessed!!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The same is true with children, we all have pictures in our minds of the perfect baby, but we manage to love the ones God gives us anyway. I think you will absolutely fall in love with your dog no matter what it looks like, I mean looks are great, but it's the personality of the dog and their imperfections are what makes us love them. If you are looking for a pet, I highly recommend rescues and shelters. If you have the money, I encourage people to only support the best of breeders, those who are improving the breed. I think of it as being a "patron of the arts", when you support a great breeder, I didn't choose Joey's breeder because I wanted a beautiful dog, I believed in his breeder's breeding program and wanted to show my financial support for it. By the way, beware of breeders who advertise baby doll faces, this overly short nose, may not be a healthy trait, and many breeds seem to be having breathing problems because their nose is bred so short.

| I understand where you are coming from. When we got Crosley, it was a spur of the moment decision. My brother's neighbor had bought her and they didn't like her and were keeping her in the basement. She was three months old & was adorable as all get out! She's now 8 and she's a 17-18lb Yorkie-Poo with a great personality!! Then we got Wrigley from a breeder when she was 12 weeks and she's beautiful! Then came Camden! She was supposed to be a breeding dog, but she lost a litter of pups and the breeder (bad) was letting her go. We were already considering getting another Yorkie puppy the size of Wrigley for her to have a playmate. Well Camden was a mess when we went to see her, dirty filthy, matted, sick, etc.. I really wasn't even sure she was a Yorkie at first and she was 2 1/2 yrs old and certainly not the cute little puppy that we were considering getting. We have now had her two years and let me say, what a difference she has made in our lives! She is probably more puppy like now at 4 then the other two! She has some emotional scars, some that I think will always be there, but she has come a long way! Giving her another chance at life, has been so rewarding, I'm not sure I would have ever known how much! There is nothing wrong with wanting a little Yorkie puppy! I feel really lucky to have both that experience and that of a rescue! I think you should let your heart tell you if this little one is right for your family!
