| Need Help. just got Tiko neutered My heart is breaking. Tiko was neutered today plus he had 7 baby teeth removed. I was supposed to keep the e-collar on for 10 days but 10 minutes after getting home we couldn't stand it. Tiko was crying, trying to get it off, my DH and I crying. We took it off. I'll be with him 24/7 so I can watch him. And his almost back to his old self. Just a little lethargic, but he is Starving and Thirsty. We got home at 4:30Pm, and were told to give him a tiny bit of nutracal and a mini biscuit at 5:30Pm. and one tiny bit of water at 10:00pm. He keeps crying and scratching at the kitchen gate wanting food, and going to his crate looking for his water bottle which isn't there. At 7:30 I caved in and gave him another tiny biscuit, a tiny bit of nutracal and I held a piece of ice for him to lick a little. But I'm so tempted to give him a little more. He's starving hasn't had anything since 9:30Pm last night. Would something really bad happen if we gave him a little more? Please give advise. |

| I donnou what would happen...i think they would just throw up? That is what happened to my chihuahua (my lil brother gave him a little bit of food) I would just wait a little longer...is for his own good. And as per the E-collar, just supervise him and it should be fine! Good luck and i hope you lil boy is back to normal soon! |

| Our vet wanted both of our girls to eat as soon as they would, so maybe just give him a little bit and wet it so its not too hard to digest? Water should be fine too, maybe just give him some ice cubes to lick so he doesn't get too much at once. |

| Thank you. I called 2 emergency animal hospitals. They didn't want to go against my vet's advised cause they said that because of the anesthesia there's a chance that they can vomit and the vomit aspirate into the lungs. I'm scared to give him anything else and it's so hard to see my baby starving. After reading your posts dh and I decided to give him a little more ice at 10:00pm and try to put him to bed. I know I'm not gonna sleep at all tonigh so I'm just gonna sit right next to his crate all night. Thanks for your quick replies |

| Carter was neutered on Tuesday. They didn't tell me not to feed him so I did. He had 4 teeth removed. He ate upon his return home that same afternoon and he did absolutely fine. I can understand your dilemna! Puppy kisses and hugs to all of you!

| Poor baby.........Gracie had 2 teeth and a rear dew claw removed as well when she got spayed and she was starved as well.......... I'm sure licking on an ice cube would do no harm if he's still restless in the middle of the night. I think I gave gracie about a tablespoon of wet food and she was still starving, I let her lick an ice cube, and snuggled up next to her to keep her warm.......after several hours she got sleepy and I put many warm blankets in her crate next to me so when she woke up I could watch her void and make sure urine was normal. The next morning, I let her eat more and drink what she wanted, but kept a close watch on urine and stool to make sure "all the parts were functional" She did not lick at her abdominal incision, but did lick at the dew claw dressing for severral days . I tried to keep her occupied with something else. You can apply bitter apple spray around the incision if the licking continues. Hopefully you will have a peaceful night and tomorrow will be better. hugs and puppy kisses from gracie |

| Archie just got neutered and I had the same issues with the e-collar. I couldn't take it anymore. I called the vet and told her I'm taking it off. Archie never licked his stitches or bit it. We just kept our eye on him and if he even so much as went near it, we just said, "NO!" And that was that. I hate the e-collar. He cries when he sees it! Maybe I'm not understanding why your dog can't eat? Archie stayed at the vet's overnight and didn't eat the food they gave him, but he ate a lot when he came home. No one told us not to feed him. Is there something else that's going on? |

| Oh, I'm so sorry you are having to see your little guy not feeling well. I am sure the reason they don't want him to eat is because he may get sick. I think you are doing the right thing by just giving him tiny amounts and the ice. I know ice is what pregnant women get in the hospital when they are delivering, so I'm sure it is o.k. for your little patient to have some as well! Hang in there....tomorrow will be a much better day. (I dread the day I will have to have my Sophia spayed. )

| When Mojo and Byron got neutered (at 9:00 in the morning) They hadn;t ate since 6:00 of the day before (i left water available until a little later)and only ate again around 5:00 of the surgery day. My chihuahua was given some treats by my little brother and was vomiting a bit...but later that they both ate normaly. I guess some dogs may have a problem eating before the recomended time and that is what they (vet) try to avoid. And thinking about it, they only missed 1 meal (they only eat 2 times a day) Last edited by Babbie; 02-18-2005 at 07:55 AM. |

| Iris: anxious to see how Tiko's first meal post-surgery went. How much did he eat? Is he doing okay today? We had Lexi's surgery yesterday, too so I know how worried you are. |

| Iris- My Jackson was neutered last Thursday. He is still wearing the e-collar. It is annoying. Mine also had teeth removed. The vet said to feed him jarred baby food- plain chicken flavor. He stayed on it for 4 days. The reason is because their mouths are sore and the trachea gets irritated from the tube for anesthesia. I can't wait to take that stupid collar off this Saturday. They also make another style which is circular and flat rather than funnel shaped. I have seen it at the pet stores. |

Avoid any heavy pet foods for the first 24 to 36 hours following an anesthetic or sedation. An animal may be given things such as toast, cottage cheese, lean meats and rice. Following this an animal should be worked back into a transition of food to its pet food. In other words, part bland diet, with increasing % of pet food. Hope this helps. | |

| Hi, I know im in another country, and mitzy didnt have teeth pulled when she was spayed 2 weeks ago, but my vet advised rice, chicken or scrambled egg for a couple of days, then i gradualy weaned her back onto her own food. I fed her when i got her home, but not sure what time they done the operation. Maybe they hadnt long done the operation, so giving time to recover |
