Question Fussy Puppy

Our puppy just turned 8 weeks old, she's doing really well with potty training, she still tries to eat my fingers but she's learning not to do that and to chew on toys instead...but we have one problem.

She's a whiner!! She'll go right to sleep in her crate if she's tired, but after her late night potty breaks it takes her a lot longer to stop crying and whining and to go back to sleep. i'll try sleeping on the floor with her until she's out and i put my fingers in there with her, but she still takes forever to lay down and go back to sleep. it drives us crazy listening to her yap and yelp. We're so sleep deprived and exhausted that my DH got a terrrible headache and threw up last night and i'm getting a cold from all the potty breaks outside in the rain. we're just pooped out and wish there was an easier way to teach her not to cry in her crate and just go back to sleep.

Any advice here? Advice about stopping the whining and about the biting on my hands would be great.

i try to only use pee pads if it's actually raining cause she won't wear a rain coat yet, she's great about using them or the grass whichever is offered to her...she's always awake, but i'm exhausted at 1am and 3am and don't want to play with her long. do i do it anyways or just keep putting her back to bed and calming her down to sleep again?? how long will i have to do this before she goes back to sleep quickly on her own? how old are puppies when they finally sleep the whole night through, she did that her first night, but never again after that. she'll go right to sleep at 10pm, and always wakes up once between 1 and 3am and then again at like 5:30-6am

help me understand her better and how long will she do these things?

Rachel, it's just like having a newborn baby. They do the same things.

When I was raising Ellie, I would put her crate on my night stand. Then I would put my fingers through the door so that she could see that I was still there. I also put one of my shirts that I had worn that day in there with her. I also lined my bathroom with pee pads and that's where I would take her in the middle of the night. It worked and after 3 weeks, she was sleeping in there on her own and didn't get up very much. She always seemed to get up around 2 in the morning like clock work. Just hang in there and it will get better.

This, unfortunately is one of the reasons so many people urged asking her breeder to keep Sadie longer.

She misses her littermates and mother. She doesn't have THEM to teach her proper dog manners or when/where to do things.

You have a newborn. You are going to get up for at least a few more weeks. Her bladder is the size of a lima bean, there is no way she can hold it 8 hours yet. Part of the training process is training yourself to do things: take her out every hour during the day (potty training! yeah!), scold her when she chews innapropriately. If she chews on your fingers do NOT put them in her crate. A puppy experiences the world through her mouth, so, stop giving her innappropriate chew toys (it would be like saying "hey, don't eat this lovely ice cream sundae even though I locked you in a box with it" to us).

Does her crate have something for her to "snuggle into"? I used a shirt of mine as well as a rolled side pad AND a recieving blanket her breeder sent with her. He had the smells of "home" and "new home" all surrounding him and he learned to comfort himself by snuggling down into them.

I covered Fergus's crate with a thin blanket because if he could SEE me, he wanted to be held/played with. If I put him in and covered him (like a parrot) he went back to sleep, no stimulation.

Good luck. Remember, she is an infant you have taken from her mother and she does NOT understand it yet!

Sadie's behavior is typical for an eight week old puppy. The general guideline for how often they have to potty is one hour for every month of age plus an hour (although that can be less for toy breeds). So Sadie's every three hour schedule is perfectly normal.

As you are aware, if Sadie were still with her mom and littermates, they would be teaching her bite inhibition. Since she is home with you, you have to teach her yourself. You've already gotten great advice in your other threads. Just be persistent as it is not an overnight solution.

I know you are sleep deprived, but try to look on the positive side. You are very fortunate that you haven't had any problems with hypoglycemia and that Sadie is so happy and healthy. Before you know it she will be an adult and you will miss the puppy stage!

Sleep Consistant

Ok, i basically keep hearing to just be consistent, so that's what i'm going to keep doing...hopefully in another month or two she'll catch on to it and go to sleep on her own and stay asleep longer and go back to sleep when she's done pottying.

i'm sorry it's not that i'm trying to say she's not a baby, i know she is, it can just be a little overwhelming at times expecially when it make you feel sick and catch cold over not getting enough rest. i am gone to work 10 hours per day with lunch hour and drive time, it's too far to go home for lunch so i don't usually get naps, when i come home, Sadie wants to play with me and not nap like i want to, she's napped with her daddy all day long as is not tired anymore...

he's home most of the day with her, he gets to see her relax and sleep and enjoy her, i have to deal with her hyperness and crazy behavior because she's ready to play again.

he gets upset about getting up in the night, but he gets to sleep until 1pm if he wants to and i have to get up at 6am and get ready so getting up three times at night SUCKS for me.

he helps as much as he can, and most nights he's up once or twice so i can sleep, but last night he was sick and i did all the work and now i'm coming down with a cold and won't want to be up all night either...

it's just frustrating, i'm sorry i sound like a terrible mom, i love my puppy to death, i don't want to give her back or anything, i'm just venting a little here, she's a joy to have when she's good and when she's sleepy, or when her play mood is at the same time as my play mood, but we sometimes are on opposite moods when i want to sleep and she wants to play and it's just tiring.

i promise i love her and won't stop trying and persisting with her, just had to vent a little of my stress and sleepiness.

I had a pup before but she was 12 wks when I got her, she wasn't too bad that I can remember losing sleep over. But then again I had a almost newborn baby so I was up at those hours of the night. I had the pad out for her and she would use it most of the time. I would put soft blankets in the crate for her, so she could "hide" under and in side of them.

The hyper and craziness isn't going to die down any time soon. I have a 10 month old and she is WILD! lol She likes to play for two hours straight in the morning and then again a few times throughout the day. The best advice I can give is just tire her out with fetching a toy or run around with her for a good little while so she gets tired! Good luck

The barking and being crazy is just a part of them being young, but at an intensified level due to the fact that she missed that stage of learning the do's and don'ts from her mom and brothers and sisters. Now it's just up to you to pick up the slack of the mommy and her siblings. It's hard, but you'll get through it. I too got my Bella before that stage at only 8wks old, so I had to be the one to show her "NO BITING!" and tap her on her nose, or yelp the way that puppies would do it and then move her away and get up and walk away to show her I had no interest in playing with her any more. As far as the barking goes i would just clap my hands once to startle her and then say QUIET or SHHH while putting my finger to my mouth. She's doing really well now at 5 months but it is lots of work. Good luck, and just remember it does get better!

is it normal for her to deliberatly bite me, this isn't chewing or nibbling, she's being mean and she's growling and barking at me and i can tell she's being mean not just playing rough...her eyes change and she's evil

what do i do here?

Sadie is not being mean. If you had watched her play with her littermates, she would have acted the same way. Puppies can sound downright vicious when they play with one another.

That's why ideally Sadie would still be with her mom and littermates for another month. If she got too rough with a sibling, he would have yelped and stopped playing with her. Sadie would have learned that rough play means the fun stops. It's a very important lesson in socialization that Sadie missed.

You will have to be patient and persistent and work extra hard with her. Bite inhibition is much harder for her to learn from you.

I hope you are joking, puppies are not evil, people are. I'm really upset with breeders who continue to ignore, the recommendations set forth by the YTCA. Sure you can take an 8-week-old lab home, but they are like a 4 month old Yorkie. You need to get it out of you mind that this is being evil, it's being normal, what's not normal is for her to be away from her mother and littermates at this age. Sure people have done it, and they say their dogs are fine, but in many cases they have other dogs at home, that can help teach what the mother teaches. Puppies do a lot of biting and chewing the first year, they are teething nearly the whole first year, first they are getting the baby teeth, and then start losing those and get the adult teeth, furthermore, dogs have a huge need to chew, so please don't think of this as being evil, or you might be tempted to discipline her in a very inappropriate fashion. I don't know if she has all of her baby teeth yet, but I can tell you, it' hurts when they bite with those, they are like pins. Many people recommend saying no or making a dog-like yelp and saying no, and setting the puppy down, and give it a chewing stick. I can tell you this biting doesn't stop overnight, and if you have children, please don't let the child around the puppy, it might bite the child, who would just react by dropping it. Your baby is scared, it is your job to make her feel safe, and I think you can do more training at a later time.

I think you are also expecting too much in the way of potty training. Most of us don't begin crate training till 12 weeks, and remember at best a yorkie can only hold 1 hour for each mouth it is, so an 8 week old puppy can only hold it 2 hours, if you don't want to get up every two hours, you can use a pee pad, in a larger enclosed area, this is what the breeder would have done. There are several toys that imitate a mothers heartbeat, and this has been helpful to young puppies who have lost their mothers. I know it's really hard on you now, I always tell new mothers to get lots of sleep before the puppy comes, even at 12 weeks, Joey was getting up every 2-3 hours, and it would take several minutes for him to get back to sleep. Raising a puppy is very hard, but if you are patient, you will not create any problems that could really be hard to fix. Best of luck.
