| Yorkies and Children I am new to the site, though, I am obsessed with it--I am on it several times a day!! I haven't gotten my Yorkie yet but plan to in the next week or so. My concern is that I have four children, ages 15 mos, 4 years, 7 years, and 10 years and I have heard a lot that Yorkies are not good with kids. The Yorkie that I am looking to adopt is a puppy and the breeder has kids, so she is used to being in a house with kids, but my breeder's youngest child is 7, not 15 mos. I figured that if I got the Yorkie as a young puppy, and he grew up with my kiddos, then, he will be fine. Have any of you had any positive experiences with Yorkies and kids? Any advice? Thanks so much! Michelle |

| Hi Michelle and welcome to YT. I think alot of it has to do with socializing your yorkie pup to little kids in the beginning. Pasquale met my nephew the first day i got him. They are best buddies. In fact, Pasquale can tell the difference between an adults voice and a childs voice...and gets super excited when he see's a child. He absolutely loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess kids! Remember, lots of training and socializing!!

| I think I would be more concerned with the yorkie getting hurt. That was my concern when I first brought her home. I think it's a great start that the breeder is bring it up around kids. I have a 4 & 10 yr old they they are great with each other. The kids are NEVER alone with her. My girl is going to be on the large side, so that makes me a little more comfortable with her playing with the kids. Good luck!!

| I think your puppy and 15 month old will love each other. You will want to watch them closely while together and never leave them unattended. Once they get to know each other I think they will be great playmates. Your Yorkie will probably even keep an eye out for the baby. I babysit two young children ages 4 and 10 months old. My Yorkie was just curious about the baby more than anything. My own kids are 10 and 11 yrs old and and he loves them. They have the energy he craves! Getting your Yorkie as a puppy raised with children he won't know any different. Enjoy your new furbaby! Congratulations |

| I agree with a pp on this. I would be more concerned with the furbaby getting hurt. I have four kids from 8 years old to 1.5 years old. They have all done great with our 2 yorkie babies. My two furbabies were bigger than average, though, so that helped. However, there were strict rules they had to abide by to protect the yorkies & my kids. I didn't allow the kids to pick up the puppies. If they wanted to hold them, they had to sit on the floor (only the carpet, too). I also monitored them carefully while playing with the pups. If you teach your kids the right way to handle pets & supervise them properly, I am sure they will have a wonderful relationship! Good luck! |

| Duke plays with my 4 yo nephew and 2 yo niece very well. Even though he only sees them on the weekends, all 3 of them get along. The kids used to be scared of Duke as he was a puppy when they all met and Duke was teething too, so I had to be careful he wouldn't hurt the kids but now, I'm more careful so that the kids wouldn't hurt Duke while trying to play with him. I think that once they are used to one another, they'll be fine. My niece was only 6 months old when I got Duke and she has gotten used to him. Duke loves to chase the kids around the house and the kids love to run so it works out. Good luck

| hello and welcome! exciting that you are getting a yorkie! i have a year old yorkie now and an 9 year old brother (who is a rough houser) and i don't advise the mixture. my yorkie baby is a rough player now and bites ankles and when commotion arises in our house (from my brother) he gets a little crazy and will go after him. i'm also scared for his own safety because he's a little guy and i'm constantly having to protect him from my brother's rough housing. so i don't know...and 3 kids is more than 1! all in all, it is up to your best judgment- so good luck !!! |

| Jackson LOVES kids - more so than adults! lol. I think because they are closer to his size. He sees a 15 month old girl daily along with a 5 year old boy. He LOVES them both (mainly because they always seem to have food all over them, lol) But he is a great child friendly dog.

| I have 3 kids ages 6, 4 and 3. They do great with Missy. You just have to supervise them and make sure your children understand how gentle they have to be with the puppy. We set certain rules when Missy came home. They have to be sitting on the floor to hold her in their lap. No running in the house and pick up your toys!

| I have 4 kids ages 5 , 6 , 10 and 12. we only have one incident that my 6 year old daughter put the pup on the bed and the puppy fell but she is okay now. They are really good with our dogs... you just have to keep an eye on them all the time and tell them to be really careful with the dogs. I have to tell you that my Great Grandmother is worse of all....... She feeds them table scraps, carry them around like a stuff toy. My kids has to tell her not to do it because she could hurt them in doing so. And there's nothing wrong with my G grandma... if you're wondering....

| Ginger LOVES my 4 year old daughter. She gets super excited to see her. We picked a yorkie that would be on the larger side - no petite ones. We have strict rules too. My daughter can not pick her up and must sit on the floor to play with her. We supervise all play and my daughter is learning that Ginger is small and you have to be careful. They have a terrific bond already.

| We got our Yorkie for my daughter for her 3rd birthday. My other daughter was a little over 1. She was a little afraid of him and his jumping but she got used to him and he has ALWAYS been great with the girls. He loves them to death and vice versa. He was a perfect choice for my girls. He is a very loving, gentle dog. We got him he just turned 5 months. |

| We got our yorkie when he was 5 months old and my kids were 3 and 1. He has been an absolute angel and loves the girls to death! He was a great choice. Our breeder too had older children like 10 yr. Things have been great, never a problem. Last edited by tskinner; 04-17-2009 at 08:27 PM. Reason: duplicate post |

| I have a 15 month old as well, and Oscar (my 20 month old Yorkie) is excellent with him and visa versa. The important thing is to teach all of your children to be gentle with the dog. This is easier with your older kids, but will take some time with your youngest. The key is consistency. Once my son was old enough to pull fur, ears, tail, etc, we would tell him, "No" and then show him how to "do nice" to Oscar. Now he is very good with Oscar, he pets him and hugs him and is never rough. You also have to teach your Yorkie how to properly interact with small children. Yorkies are very excitable, so it's important for the puppy to learn early own that he or she should not jump on, nip, etc.
