| Protecting or Over Protective??? I can't tell you how much this site means to me...As a new yorkie owner, I've asked a gazillion questions, and have always gotten so many good answers...Here's probably one of the most important questions I've ever asked... I have a nice big back yard w/a 6 1/2 ' cedar fence...I've gotten past my fear of hawks (although I do, occasionally, see one, and grab my Apple up and into the house), but I'm still all worried about her picking up every single little stick, pebble and leaf and chewing it up...Unless I'm playing ball w/her, I worry about her grabbing anything and everything in site...Now my back yard is a clean one, w/no poisonous plants, bits of metal, etc. etc. etc., but there is a pine tree in the neighbor's yard, and, it seems that birds drop pebbles (?) acorns (?) in the yard, and I just worry about everything that goes into her mouth...Subsequently, I don't spend as much time in the back yard, as I would, if I weren't worrying about her...Should I let her chew (and I'm sure swallow) these little bits of twigs, etc., or what??? I think she's missing out on some good times, fresh air, and exercise because of my fears...Feed-back much appreciated... Love, Maggie & Apple xoxoxox |

| I don't think I would let her chew on things from outside but I would give her a healthy chew treat while she is outside. This will also help her associate outside with treats and she will stay away from the other stuff |

| Simon is a walking pac-man too! Hopefully we will have an answer soon, because I worry about the exact same thing! Simon is almost 14 weeks old and is so very "oral" just like a baby should be, but it makes me crazy! He will pick up and chew anything that lets him. My question to add to yours is, at what age do they tend to stop wanting to mouth/eat everything? He can't walk by a flower, twig, acorn etc. without a taste when he's outside. HE LOVES being outdoors and with the weather here in VA trying to get warmer, I'd like him to enjoy grass vs. concrete! LOL... |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | its hard to keep everything out of their mouths. Mine manages to eat rabbit poop and acorns, and chew on stix even when i'm watching and playing with her. they are just really quick adn think its a fun (and annoying) game.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | You can try what i did when i was training Morgan not to chew in the house. it might work with outside stuff too. When morgan was little i boobie trapped her with little papers and stuff sprayed with bitter apple. she always used to grab stuff up that fell on the floor and chew it up. so a few boobie trapped items later, no more chewing up little things. it might work with sticks and acorns outside too. worth a shot

| It's very hard to stop them from picking things up, chewing, & swallowing. The vet told me that there's a type of muzzle that can be worn, but I haven't tried it. When Gus was a pup, I let him enjoy playing in my yard. I realized that it was impossible to stop him from eating things off the ground. So, I let him. He ate twigs, leaves, dandelion flowers, wood chips, mulch, acorns, earth worms, squirrel droppings, etc. He was treated several times for worms & parasites. Antibiotics have harmful side effects. He has an undiagnosed problem with excessive thirst & frequent urination. I don't know if it was caused by something he ate from the ground or something else. Now I walk him in the yard on a leash, trying to avoid things on the ground, & give a tug if he tries to pick something up to chew & eat. This is really futile, as he finds things everywhere. If you lived near me in NJ, I'd say no yard. However, TX yards may be "cleaner".

YT Addict | I have the same worries and concerns. Pebbles is 12 weeks, and now that the weather is nice she loves it outside. But she try's to eat leaves, sticks and even try's rocks and then she went as far as to chew on the bricks on the side of the house. I do not let her but it is a constant battle to keep everything from her mouth. So sorry I have no advice for you other than to tell you that your not alone. |

| Out of our five, we have two that will grab anything (very quickly) and put in their mouth. We also have a Gus (short for Bogus) and I used to allow him to explore and put most things in his mouth, until he was 13 months old and noticed he was hoarding pine bark nuggets in his kennel. We live in Texas and I would leave the back door open on pretty days and they would play and come and go as they wanted out into their courtyard...well, he was EATING the pinebark! The moment I discovered what he was actually doing, that very night he woke us up crying. My husband and I picked him up and turned on the light in the bedroom and saw blood running down his back leg and lifted his tail where we saw he was trying to pass a golf ball size mass of BM and WOOD! Of course I felt like a heel for letting him chew on these....We of course call the vet and we had to manually work out that mass with him wailing and barking in pain and bleeding..it was awful!!! HIs rectum prolapsed, he was on a special food with stool softners for 2 months and even now, he occasionally has problems if he eats too much or more than 1 treat bisquit a day...the new recipe of Greenies are really bad at making him have trouble...I realize this story is long, but I wanted to emphasize the dangers of these little guys and eating yard debris.....He is so funny now if he finds something he KNOWS he's not supposed to have, he brings it to me and hold in his mouth until I take it out, then he gets real excited for his good deed...

YT 2000 Club Member | Jasmine is 14 weeks old and is chewing on everything outside too.....she will run and pick up a stick and then a leaf and then a rock and then its off before I can even reach her to the rose bushes and she even chews on them. By the time we go inside it is time for a nap...........MINE! What she has been doing here lately is sticking her head through the chain link fence........that really freaks me out! Our poodle was never as interested in everything as much as Jasmine is! She is like one little bitty wind up toy that just keeps going and going and going and going...............
