How awful. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for not securing their dog.

Honey
There is one in my neighborhood that is behind this wrought iron fence that gives it full view of the street. I can't tell you what that thing sounds like, but it is a cross between a freight train and a bull (now I understand where the name comes from).

Anyway this one has a habit of waiting until unsupecting (most neighbors know now) people come walking their dogs and he will stay quiet as a mouse until you are RIGHT in front of his fence, then he lets go with all the fury he can muster. Scares the poor dogs and owners to DEATH, then CHARGES the fence with all of his might.

I don't even walk on that side of the street anymore, and feel deprived of my rights in my nieghborhood.

This THING is in the same yard with a small dog.

I don't know why anyone would want such an animal other than maybe to protect property. I pray it never gets out because if it does, I swear someone or something is going to die that day.

Angry

there should be a mandatory 20 yr term for every incident involving these killers then maybe the owners would not be so hasty in getting one

That's so sad. My neighbor has two pits living in her house with three children under the age of 7! And all she complains about it how "these poor animals are misunderstood". Sheesh, do your homework already! You can't argue with statistics. Aggravates me to no end. (And she can't figure out why I won't let my daughter come over to play with her's)

That's so sad. People should really have any dog secured in their house.

I wish people would actually train these dogs to be good dogs so that they didn't get such a bad rep.

Every pitbull I've encountered has been a big baby and a sweetheart, luckily. I hope all these people who want this dog because they look tough, actually learn about the breed and train them properly.

Ok, i find this VERY interesting, I wish you people would do some research and actually meet some normal pit bulls before making assumptions. I have YET to meet a mean pit bull though, I am sure there are plenty because of the type of people that tend to own them dont do anything with them, but I know 50X more snippy yorkies and other small breeds, since they tend to be spoiled and can get away with more. ANY dog that is left in a yard with minimal contact is going to be this way. I dont care what the breed is. And, how many times do labs and other types of dogs charge a fence barking and growling (defending their property as i would want any dog of mine to do), but would never hurt you once you got back there. Maybe if you people would do some research you would see that pit bulls dont even make good guard dogs because they are so friendly (the same reason they get stolen so easily). Mine has yet to even bark at the door bell.

I have a Miniature Schnauzer that will protect me no matter what if i dont tell her someone is OK, and she feels that it is her duty to do so. She is meaner than my APBT or Aussie Mix could EVER imagine being, but that is just her nature. She really doesnt play when it comes to strangers. But since she is a small breed dog people dont take her as being harmful or aggressive. I couldnt imagine what people would think of her if she were 50 lbs. or so. I have also had a GSD that could not even be walked because of her serious protectiveness and other the top dog aggression. And, this is not from poor socialization or anything of the nature because I come from a very dog smart home, my parents have had dogs (including working GSDs) all my life and I have YET to see one as well-balanced as my APBT.

Many of the larger working breeds have gotten a bad rap and go through their phases in the media where people pick them out because that is what sells and what people want to hear. I dont know how many times I have been bitten by my roommates chihuahua. I was also bitten by a lab and a husky as a child. But, I have yet to be bitten by a pit bull, even in the stressful shelter situation most are all just happy for the attention. Most dog bites are not even reported, I know that none of mine were. But for some reason people feel that pit bull bites are a big deal, because like i said, that is currently what gets the media hyped up.

I have a 2 year old, female, APBT that has her Canine Good Citizen, that I compete with in obedience, and am currently training for agility. How many of you can say that? She has never met a stranger, she loves all people, adults and especially children. She gets along with all dogs, larger and small (including our YORKIE). She is the smartest and most well-rounded dog I have ever owned and I would definitely have another.

You may not like the APBT, but to call them KILLERS and refer to them as THINGS is ridiculous. How would you feel if someone talked bad about your beloved pets?

How about visiting "www.pitbullforum.com" and doing some reading from people that actually have first hand experience with the breed.

I use to be very friendly toward all dogs, and I appreciate learning that this isn't a good thing. So many attacks on Yorkies, I don't know if it's just because they are so small and an easy target, or their attitude gets them in trouble. I'm now so careful when I'm around other dogs. I don't know how this woman could have prevented the attack, it sounds like the dog came out of nowhere, and this is so frightening. People seem to fight these leash laws, and right now the fines just don't seem to be large enough for people to take them seriously.

It is true that not all big dogs/pitbull are bad but they are big and strong and if they decide to inflict damage, they can easily do so and the effect will be many more times than a small dog. Small dogs do get away with alot of things and that is because they are small-it isn't fair but it is a reality and nothing is ever going to make it fair. If you have a big dog, it needs to be well-trained or at least the owner is able to control the dog. Example-a small dog jumping on someone is nothing but a big dog can make a person fall hence the responsibility of owning a big dog (including training) is so much more needed and it is sad to say, not a lot of big dog owners are prepared to take on the training/challenge needed and the bigger dogs do not get away with it and end up inflicting injury to others.

Also, I think small dogs are seen as a prey to these bigger dogs. When I saw the pitbull/mastiff mix that was lost in my neighbourhood last night charging at a 3lbs Yorkie who wasn't even looking at him and wasn't even aware he was charging towards them, how do you explain that? It is the killing instinct. Good thing he didn't decide to attack the owner or the Yorkie when she lifted her Yorkie and hugged him close to her. And how did this big dog end up running around our neighbourhood? Coz the owners "thought" they could contain him in their own makeshift 3 foot temporary plastic orange fence and when he jumped out, he didn't even listen to his owners calling for him and just took off. You could tell he is not under control and is pretty wild.

I have been around pitbulls/rotweilers/chows/dobermans all my life! We had a beautiful rottie that was a big baby to us...he pinned my son down when he was 4yrs old. Scared me to death. I had a chow turn on me...I've been literally chased by pitbulls in our neighborhood.
All the news stories lately involve these breeds. We had a story out of Phoenix, a female police officer and her husband who was also a police officer had a baby 3wks old. Their chow killed their baby. One bite to the head! Everyone that has a trained dogs of these breeds gets offended when we fear these breeds. How can we not!!! It's always on the news... Irresponsible dog owners have these breeds and aren't willing to take responsibility when their dogs attack!
We had a woman at our children's bus stop who was attacked by a pitbull. She wrapped her arms around the kids and took the blunt of the attack. The town 20miles away from us had a pitbull attack a little girl in her front yard and the little girl was killed. They now have laws in place to outlaw pitbulls. The people who own them can have them but they pay a hefty price to license them. When is it gonna stop??? My husbands' best friend had a rottie and it went into the neighbors doggie door and killed their little dog! It had to be put to sleep.

I guess where I'm getting at....is these breeds are dangerous.

I always feel bad when I read these things. I raised pit bull's for 6 years, and never had a complaint about my dogs, or any of the puppies I sold. Your all right. You do have to be vigilent in watching and training them. I wish they would really investigate these attacks a little closer, and see if the pits were inbred, or mixes. A lot of pits are crossed bred with mastiffs, and rotwielers. That's why I would advise anyone who buys a pit to make sure that the breeder is reputable, and never ever buy one without papers.
