The only pitbulls I have come accross were mean so I dont care who says they are a loving pet I dont trust them. Why is it there are always stories of attacks with this breed?

Its the owner and the way they train the dog.

i'd have to say that i've never encounterd an agressive pit bull, and growing up in the deep south, I've been around them all my life. I've owned a rotty and she was the sweetest thing. I agree that some breeds do have a tendency to be agressive it seems. But I think the agressiveness is the responsibility of the *owner* not the dog. I've seen agressivness in alot of breeds. I'll rarely approch a chi, chows can tend to nip and bite, I have friends of a cocker spaniel who can't take her anywhere. I think the real danger of these dogs is their size, and when owning a dog with such brute strength, as opposed to a toy sized animal, an owner should take extra precaution.

I agree with LibbieLu08...don't blame the dog...it is up to the owner to know and train their dog.

I have YET to meet a mean pit bull though, I am sure there are plenty because of the type of people that tend to own them dont do anything with them, but I know 50X more snippy yorkies and other small breeds, since they tend to be spoiled and can get away with more. ANY dog that is left in a yard with minimal contact is going to be this way. I dont care what the breed is. And, how many times do labs and other types of dogs charge a fence barking and growling (defending their property as i would want any dog of mine to do), but would never hurt you once you got back there. Maybe if you people would do some research you would see that pit bulls dont even make good guard dogs because they are so friendly (the same reason they get stolen so easily). Mine has yet to even bark at the door bell.

I have a Miniature Schnauzer that will protect me no matter what if i dont tell her someone is OK, and she feels that it is her duty to do so. She is meaner than my APBT or Aussie Mix could EVER imagine being, but that is just her nature. She really doesnt play when it comes to strangers. But since she is a small breed dog people dont take her as being harmful or aggressive. I couldnt imagine what people would think of her if she were 50 lbs. or so. I have also had a GSD that could not even be walked because of her serious protectiveness and other the top dog aggression. And, this is not from poor socialization or anything of the nature because I come from a very dog smart home, my parents have had dogs (including working GSDs) all my life and I have YET to see one as well-balanced as my APBT.

Many of the larger working breeds have gotten a bad rap and go through their phases in the media where people pick them out because that is what sells and what people want to hear. I dont know how many times I have been bitten by my roommates chihuahua. I was also bitten by a lab and a husky as a child. But, I have yet to be bitten by a pit bull, even in the stressful shelter situation most are all just happy for the attention. Most dog bites are not even reported, I know that none of mine were. But for some reason people feel that pit bull bites are a big deal, because like i said, that is currently what gets the media hyped up.

I have a 2 year old, female, APBT that has her Canine Good Citizen, that I compete with in obedience, and am currently training for agility. How many of you can say that? She has never met a stranger, she loves all people, adults and especially children. She gets along with all dogs, larger and small (including our YORKIE). She is the smartest and most well-rounded dog I have ever owned and I would definitely have another.

You may not like the APBT, but to call them KILLERS and refer to them as THINGS is ridiculous. How would you feel if someone talked bad about your beloved pets?

How about visiting "www.pitbullforum.com" and doing some reading from people that actually have first hand experience with the breed.
A pit bull bite is worse then any other big dogs bite because there jaws are so much stronger then any other big dogs jaws.

Topics like this become so heated. Everyone has their own opinions and that's fine.

I worked as a bather in a grooming salon. The dogs three dogs who bit me were a Golden Retriever, Chihuahua, and a Yorkie. The dogs who were the biggest babies, boxers and pitbulls.

Yes, little dogs can get away with a lot more because their small mouths don't do much damage. Thus, they don't hurt someone so bad they end up in the hospital and the incident doesn't end up on the news. It's still a bite, whether it's from a small dog or a big dog.

Some of the incidents that show up on the news and they say it's a pitbull, sometimes isn't. They are mixes or something totally different.
And there are many incidents of people getting bitten by dogs, most of the time it never makes the news unless it's a pit.

There's no such thing as a bad breed, again it's how they were trained and in some instances bad breeding (breeding two dogs with bad temperaments or inbreeding).
Which Dog Breeds are the Most Aggressive?

Again, the breed will continue to get a bad rep as long as there are owners who don't care to train them. It's horrible and I hope one day it changes. Until then many will live in fear... heck I would be scared if a dog came charging at me because the owners are not responsible enough to secure them.

Ok I may sound like the bad guy here, but I just have to say YES these dogs CAN and DO attack, but not every one of them do. I know several pitbulls that are WONDERFUL dogs. You an't judge a book by it's cover. I feel very sorry for the yorkie and whoever get attacked by these powerful breeds, but not all of them are bad dogs. I have several people ask me why I have a rottie when I have small children, but all I say to them is that she is the BEST dog ever! She loves my kids! My nephew has a pit bull and he is a wonderful dog. I would let my children around him in a heart beat. I know that I am going to hear it for saying this, but all I am saying is that there are several pit bulls and many other "dangerous" breeds that are wonderful dogs!

and sense they can attack I would not want to take a chance with young kids at all because all it take is on bite to kill or injure them horribly bad

It's the owner that is at fault here. I can tell you here in New York you have no idea how these animals are treated and trained and abused all for money making purposes, once rescued the only alternative is to be put down, they are just to aggressive to retrain and not to people so much as to other animals. I have many friends who own pitbulls and they are the sweetest most loving animals, because the owners have trained them to be that way. I am saying the pitt is a dangerous animal if not trained properly and know from the start who the dominant one is, their jaws automatically lock down when they bite, they have been compared it to a hyena (thats strong) some wont release their jaws till killed When rescued their eyes say it all, what did I do , why did they do this to me, it's so sad they are killers in the ring cause thats all they know , they have been tortured and know if they don't win they will be killed on the spot, I have seen it first hand.

I wouldn't trust ANY dog not to turn, the difference with the pit is the fact they can kill you with their bite.
Don't lump ALL pits into this category , cause it's not true.
When trained and properly managed the pitt is a loving companion and one who would die for their owner, blame people not the pitt/

It's very sad and I encourage anyone who knows of a fighting ring to please report it, cause these animals are suffering every single day

It's always so sad to hear when a dog attacks.

I've got to give my opinion here too. I agree hands down that it's the owner's fault.

I owned a Doberman pincher who was trained so well, when another animal walked past us as we were in my unfenced front yard, all I had to do was tell her to sit and stay and she'd sit and then never move until I released her. She was such a friendly dog, everyone how met her for five minutes loved her. My vet cried right along with us the day we ended her fight with wobblers disease.

It's amazing how many people get dogs with no idea on how to train them, or the desire to learn how to.

Animal Planet did a great show on the Michael Vick dogs that were rescued. I highly recommend it.
