| Worried Mom! Okay, so I have raised three kids and had a bunch of wonderful pets in my life and have been thru so much with them however this one really hit me today when I had to take my little Dixie, six months old to the vet. She is getting spayed, microchipped and two baby teeth taken out tomorrow. Leaving her there was so darned hard I just wanted to cry and I am having to constantly keep myself busy this evening so I don't dwell on the thought that she is there in a cage problely thinking about what she could have possibly done wrong to get herself in this kind of trouble!!!!! This "empty" feeling I have now is I believe worse than I have felt in a long time. I want to go to the vets office and camp out on their sidewalk!! She will be gone tonite and also tomorrow nite and I will pick her up on Thursday hopefully barring no complications. My daughters little yorkies Teddy and Maxie are here and do not understand where their playmate and sleeping buddy is. They keep looking for her and giving me that long sad look like what happened??? So keep this "nervous nellie" mom in your thoughts for the next day or so. I hope she will come home in not much pain and able to stay with Teddy and Maxie. Hope I do not have to keep her confined away from them!!! Anyone else been thru this, how did your baby do and how did you handle it? This is harder than with real children!!!!! |

| ZsaZsa only weighed 2.4 lbs when she was spayed, micro chipped and two teeth pulled at a year old. She came through it great. I was so nervous and paced and paced while she had surgery. The nurses were so nice and sent me pictures of her when she was awake to my cell phone and I got to see her as soon as she woke up. I then went and got a much needed massage and they sent more pictures. I picked her up that afternoon. She bounced right back. Try not to worry and go get a massage. It really helped ease the tension and stress. Let us know how she does. |

Hugs to you.. do you have onsies for her? It keeps them from licking the incision and yet they are so soft. I was glad I had them for Sandy. I will keep both of you in my prayers.

| It's ALWAYS hard to know that our babies are ALONE in a CAGE and going through surgery!!! It was very hard for me when Daizy had her surgery! I'm sure your baby will be just fine!!!! I can't understand why they are keeping her 2 nights......I was able to get Daizy the same day.....after her surgery.... and with pain meds she did great!!! Good thoughts are going your way. She'll be home soon!! :0)

| I (and so many others I am sure) know just how you feel. No amount of reassurance helps, really. Nothing will be right until you have your baby back in your arms and home again. Until then, I will say a prayer for both of you.

| I never leave mine at a vet unless there is someone there 24/7. I have never left one overnight for minor surgery and have always brought them home after spays/neuters. I have done quite a few because I am a rescuer. My biggest fear is that something could happen and no one would be there, so I prefer having them home with me. I am not telling you what to do, but I would suggest that you speak with the vet and ask for a good reason why you cannot bring her home tomorrow afternoon. Ask him what being in a cage will do for her...and what would happen IF she had a problem...is someone there? Ask him what they are going to do there overnight that you could not do! Many vets recommend that they stay because some people have a tendency to overreact to things...OR to let the dogs run and jump when they should not. I believe most vets recommend it to make their own lives simpler. Just my thoughts. I am so sure she will be fine. She is lucky to have such a concerned parent! Keep us posted!

| oh gosh girl i was a mess when I dropped off my dex for his neuter and it was not even overnight. I dropped him off and went to work. I worked all day and the vet called to tell me it was done and he was recovering nicely. I called an hour later and he was fine, he peed, pooped, drank some water on his own and walked.... so she said the anesthia (sp?) was wearing off great. I probably called 3 more times before I left work and then went to pick him up. They warned me that he was fine but when he would be placed in my arms he would go limp like noodles. They prepared me for that. Yet, when they got him and put him in my arms and he went limp, I FREAKED! LOL They said it was 'relief' ... that almost all of the dogs do that. They get into the arms they feel the most safe and comfortable and can let themselves go. He certainly did! Scared me to death! Its nerve wracking no doubt. Call the vets when you need to and know your baby will be just fine!

To the OP- your baby will be fine!!!! Surgery is so scary but as long as you have done all the necessary pre-op blood work and have a good vet things should be great!! I would inquire as to why she has to stay for two nights though.... I would go crazy! Oooh and I LOVE the massage suggestions! What a great idea! Good luck and keep us posted!

| I just had my Pebbles spayed last Friday. She is 7mo. old. She did great!! Coco missed her so much, as they are buddies. I picked her up that same day and just held her. She was so sleepy so I just put a pet bed in my daughters room with some water nearby and checked on her every 15min to half hour. She stayed in the same position for a while. Then she started slowly getting perkier and perkier. I let Coco visit her but I held him because he was so excited I didn't want him to hurt her. I just put baby gates around for a few days so she wouldn't go down stairs. She was great. I also bought a collar for her so she couldn't lick her stitches but did'nt need it because she wasn't at all bothered by them. Now her scar is hardly noticable and I can't wait to give her a nice bath. Good luck with your baby!!! COCO PEBBLES |

| Minnie was spayed last month, she was fine. She acted like nothing happen the day after when we picked her up. I have to admit I did cry when I let her all by herself.

| [quote=amandawash;2285161]I agree with everything you said aside from the fact that you think vets recommend clients leaving their pets overnight to make "their own lives simpler." Have you ever thought that it is most likely for the protection of the pet?? Um, sorry, but that comment rubbed me the wrong way. /quote] Actually, I asked why they do it and that was exactly what I was told by a vet tech. People get scared and don't know how to handle a dog that is still under the influence of anesthesia. That way they don't call freaking out in the morning...or end up at the EC needlessly during the night. Call it whatever you want to call it. Might want to ask your vet why they keep them overnight (if they do) and ask them what would happen to the dog if it had complications from the surgery such as bleeding. Do tell me how it could be better and safer for a dog to be left at a vet clinic overnight where there is no one on staff? Very few vet clinics have round the clock care. Sorry, but I will never leave a pet somewhere alone. And...by the way....low cost spay/neuter clinics never keep a dog overnight!
