| Help My yorkie is 5 months old. He is very cute and his name is Jackson. He is also very hyper and mouthy. The vet said now(5-6 months) is the time to get him neutered. My questions: 1. Will neutering calm him down? 2. He is about 4.5 lbs., is he too small too walk on a leash in town? 3. He gets very hyper and when I put him on my bed he sometimes almost falls off, i watch him like a hawk, but how come eveyone else can safely put their yorkie on the bed? 4. When is it too cold to go outside (he has a shearling jacket)? 5. He seems smaller than other yorkies at 4.5 lbs and 7 inches at the shoulder, is he? 6.How do i get him to stop nipping? |

2. Mia is 22wks 4 lb and I walk her all the time. Just takes a bit more vigilance to keep from stepping on her or others stepping on her. Mia wears a harness and we keep her on a short lead right at heel. 3. Mia is getting better, but has her hyper moments on the bed. I only put her on at bedtime and hold a greenie or bacon edible nylabone for her to chew. Gradually she is learning to stay on the bed and not go near the edge. She has jumped at least twice that we know of - fortunately without harm since my bed is over 3' off the ground at mattress top. I think it has just been something she learned. 4. Mia LOVES the cold. To potty I don't bother with the coat, but I am in NM and the coldest is upper 20's in the middle of the night and only for a few minutes. When we are out for very long, she wears a sweater or coat. 5. Mia is also about 7" to shoulder 4 lb. 6. Nipping - Good Luck! We generally flick her on the nose with a stern 'NO' It seems to work somewhat. | |

| i am going to neuter my toby as well (he is 3 pounds so far) ..... i know that it stops them from marking, ect... and as for the hyper thing, its kinda a puppy thing isnt it? arent most puppies hyper? i know my toby has hyper moments but he also has quite moments.... as for up on the bed, i have toby up on the bed all the time (it is a double pillowtop so it is pretty high up) and he HAS fallen off a few times (because of his hyperactive play and not paying attention to where he is going) but he hasnt been hurt, just keep a good eye on him... as for the walking on teh leash, as with everything else just be vigilant.... as for the cold thing i really couldnt relate ( i live in california, and i have only had to put a sweater on him a few times when we have gone out at night)..... 4 and a half pounds isnt unusual, ive seem smaller yorkies very freequently...... and as for youre final question about the nipping, toby USED to do this as well, but he stopped doing it (to me at least) after the first day, i just gave him a gentle flick in the nose and a serious "No", it only took one day (but he still sometimes forgets when he is in "play mode" and needs a reminder)....... jackson is a cute name, post some picks, i would love to see them |

| goldcupmom - Where did you find a small enough harness?? Do you remember how much it was? Hannah - I have a few comments on some of your questions. I live in Maryland and we had our first snow and ice 3 nights ago. I took Hercules outside to go to the bathroom without a coat and he seemed ok. After he played in the snow though, of course. About the bed, we don't let him sleep in bed with us, but he has been on the bed before, and he's pretty hyper. One night we were laying there, and he was pouncing around like usual. Then all of sudden, he pounced right off the bed! Luckily we have a bed that's pretty low the ground, but it still scared me to death! We don't lay on the bed with him very much anymore. About the nipping, Hercules is very bitey too when he plays. Usually we just shove a toy in his mouth instead of our fingers, clothes, etc. If this doesn't work and he's too crazy, I will walk away and leave him confined to a certain area. But not his crate. You shouldn't punish him, because he isn't doing anything wrong, he's just playing. But by walking away, it might be able to calm him down. Good luck, I know there are soo many things to worry about with these guys, but it's completely worth it when you look into their cute little faces!! |

| My harness came from PetsMart. Another Yorkietalker had a picture of hers wearing it. It is nylon braid and goes more around the chest and tummy instead of the neck. there is a band between the front legs up the chest - kind of like on a horse- and it hooks at the back with a plastic clip and has 2 leash rings. I is VERY adjustable and I don't think I even bought the smallest size. It was under $10 I know. I think around $7. Last edited by goldcupmom; 12-22-2004 at 06:06 AM. |

| Thank you everyone! Jackson is still biting even though I tried the suggestions. I need to find a chew toy that looks like my hand! He gets bored with his toys even though i rotate all fifty of them. He is still very cute though! I wish i knew how to post a photo... |

| Definately get a harness! You don't want to be pulling on his neck and wind pipe. they are prone to trachea collapse so don't want to excerbate this. As to the cold! Mine dog is around 3 # grown. It is very cold here in Montana and she goes out fine. I do keep a sweater on her at night and in the morning. It can get 30 to 40 below zero here, so am a little worried about it. She went out fine at 13 below the other morning. She just does her stuff and comes right back in! I wouldn't leave them out. Of course, mine won't stay out without me anyway! Seperation anxiety to the max! Pat |

| Bell did the biting thing for about a year! It drove me crazy because when my nieces and nephews came over they were afraid of her. But shes very calm now, To the point that I thought there was something wrong with her. But I guess its maturity. As far as the harness I bought Bells at petsmart too. If you don't have a petsmart by you, you can also look for a cat harness at your locate Walmart or other super store.
