| When to transition from Pen Hi everyone. I was wondering when you started to let your little ones spend time alone in one area of the house instead of being left alone in the crate/pen? I have had Bella for 1.5 months and she has been doing well with the pen and pee pad training. I pretty much watch her all the time if she is out of her pen and she is good. I would like to eventually just leave her in the kitchen during the day, so she is not so confined, but when and how do I start this? I do not want to mess up any progress and training we have established , so maybe this is to early? She is 3.5 months old. Any suggestions? |

| As long as the area you confine her to is puppy proof, I see no reason why not to try. Start for a short time, then gradually increase the time she is alone. When she makes a mistake, back in the pen she goes for a while. Gracie is now 4 1/2 months and has mastered the stairs, so I let her run around as she wants when I am home. When I am gone, she is in her pen.

| So I puppy proofed the kitchen and then chickened out this morning. I got the feeling that I was rushing things. She is only 3.5 months old, and has really just settled into our routine. I hate leaving her, but if she is going to bark and be distructive at least I know she is safe in her pen. I think I will wait another month or so before I give her more space when she is alone. I do not want to mess up any of the great progress we have made . Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping her entertained all day in her pen? There is only one day during the wek that she is in there for 8 hours. I came home to find her water bowl tipped over and the pen a mess. I give her a special treat, but it looks like she barely touches it. She also has a ton of different toys.... |

| I am not certain about this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sleep for most of the day while we are gone.

| This is a little sad, but I actually plan on camping outside my house tomorrow for part of the day to see what she does. I have a lot of time on my hands! It will ease my mind and I am sure you are right about the sleeping. |

| When in the pen, Venus was really good at knocking food and water bowl over. I think she did that, trying to climb out. I have a climber, so the pen only worked for like a week or less. I put pee pads in the kitchen, and just gave her kitchen priveledges. We're very slowly working on house priveledges. |

| Have you tried using a water bottle instead of a bowl of water? That will keep the pen much cleaner. I have all of Gracie's toys in the pen. She sleeps alot of the day. I know this because I often work from home and leave her in her pen when I cannot watch her, which ends up being most of the day. I sneak downstairs and peek in on her, and she is sound asleep in her crate.

| My Bella is also 3.5 months old and she has free run of the kitchen and living room when I am with her. She is learning to go outside and is very good at that, but will sometimes go on the pee pads that I laid down on top of a few old pee marks on the carpet. I do take her out frequently and watch her like a hawk though. When I leave for errends, she goes in the laundry room with a gate and has not soiled in there yet. She does get a treat most of the time when she goes outside and is very happy to receive those. |

| I think I will slowly introduce her to spending time in the kitchen alone. She has free run of it when I am around and is excellent with the pee pads. I am more concerned with her barking. She is still not confident staying in a room alone, the poor thing whines when I go to the bathroom, so I am concerned that the kitchen alone would be more stressful then the pen?! I will put her pen in the kitchen as well...so she has her safe place. I guess 3.5 months isn't to young to start introducing it. Hearing your stories are great. Thanks! |

| Kitchen alone? Venus was eating up my lenolium tile right underneath me, while I was on the laptop Bad part was....I didn't even know there was a spot under there that she could get ahold of.. But she's doing great in the kitchen alone now. I've put clear deoderant on the spot of tile where she chewed...and everything wood in the kitchen. After the deoderant on it, she doesn't mess with chewing anymore. She's about 18 weeks old now. I've been very slowly, unsuccessfully introducing her to the living room. I have a feeling that carpet cleaner will get lots of use this winter. |
