Have you tried using a water bottle instead of a bowl of water? That will keep the pen much cleaner. I have all of Gracie's toys in the pen. She sleeps alot of the day. I know this because I often work from home and leave her in her pen when I cannot watch her, which ends up being most of the day. I sneak downstairs and peek in on her, and she is sound asleep in her crate.
