| Night Time Barking WAY OUT OF CONTROL!!! Long Post Ok for the most part my puppy who is now 3.5 months old and is doing pretty good during the day time with her barking and misbehavior. Today she spent most of the day with me alone and was very calm and quiet. I did notice that she would want to sleep on the couch or on a pile of clothes etc for most of the naps. I noticed that she was quite calm and very easy going and not even biting as much as usual. I was alone as my husband had taken the kids out for a few hours. My kids are 11, 7, and 1. When everyone got back home she went wild. Boy do I mean wild. It was then time to go to bed and she just went nuts with the barking. All day she wasnt barking at all and all of a sudden she just wouldnt stop. I had to put a blanket over her crate to muffle the sound. She did the same thing the night before. No one could sleep. She barked for two hours straight. I tried the water in the face, the coin shaking, ignoring her etc. Come to find last night that she had vomited in her crate. After it was clean she was ok for about 10 minutes then started up with the barking again. I waited and did the corrections again to no avail. I then let her out after 30 minutes and took her to her litter box. She peed. Then back to the crate for more barking again for at least 30 min. I then fed her and she was ok then she fell asleep in my rec room on top of some clothes. I took her off the clothes and into the crate she went then into my room. I finally got to go to sleep at around 2am. Tonight she starts up with the barking again. She goes at it for about an hour. I put the blankets over the crate and after about 30 min she stops. She starts up again and i take her to the litter. No pee. I take her to her food. NOt hungry. I put her back into the crate again. She starts up again. I turn on the tv for a little while she goes at it for about 10 more minutes. She finally stops for about 45 minutes. Now she is back to the barking again. I have her in the kitchen and dont want to bring her into my room etc because i dont want her to get used to sleeping near us. I dont want her to get used to being near us as I dont want to start any type of separation anxiety later on. Its bad enough my 1 yr old wants to be on my hip all day. Dont know what else she could want other then to sleep with someone. Ive tried everything and nothing is working. I live in an apartment and my downstairs neibors are real jerks when it comes to noise esp late at night to the point they will call the landlord and the police. I dont know what else to do to get her to stop the barking. My husband is really giving me a hard time about it as he gets up at 4am to go to work and he cant sleep with all the barking. I need help!!! Any advice? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post. Is. Last edited by isevilla; 10-07-2006 at 10:51 PM. |

| Try moving the crate into your room,I know this sonds as if it will make her more clingy but I think it works. If sh can see you she might settle! Does she only go in the crate at night?Try and make the crate a place good thing happen like feed her in it or give her a little treat when she is in it or hide some treats in it you could also get a kong toy and fill that so she has somehing to focus on! Hope this helps.

| Why can't your dog sleep with you? My puppy slept with me from the first night I got him (8 weeks old) - and he slept through the night (6 or 7 hours) from the very first night on - never cried and never barked --- and didn't even pee during the night. I would certainly give this a try - because I couldn't stand barking at night - I sympathize with your husband... *** If you don't want him sleeping with you - let him sleep with one of the kids...they'd love it. Good luck! Carol Jean |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | How much exercise is she getting? When you say she spent the whole day with you and was calm and quiet, the first thing I think is that she needs to burn off some energy at some time during the day.

No she goes in the crate at all times of the day to just lay in there and also to sleep at times. Sometimes I will find her on top of a pile of blankets, or the sofa.

| We still have a crate/night barker. I still havent been able to get this dog to quit barking while in the crate and its worse at night. I cant get to bed any earlier than 1 or 2 am with her. She then starts right back up with the barking at 7am or earlier. Ive tried everything and nothing works. She doesnt want to be in the crate at all she wants to run around the house. She wants to sleep anywhere except the crate and voices that decision loudly every single night. Im really getting tired of it and I have already considered getting rid of her. Anytime she starts up the barking its so loud and its so annoying I just cant take it anymore. I dont want her loose in the house while im alsleep as she tears up paper and anything she can find around the house even clothes. She will also jump on anywhere where anyone is sleeping and jump all over their face and start to nip at them. So that's where we are today a few months later after the original post. Any additional suggestions? Is. |

| My 4 dogs sleep in bed with me and my husband...they go in crates when we arent home only. They certainly dont have separation axiety because they sleep with us?? Id give it a whirl...I couldnt imagine 2 hours of non stop barking..eek..I agree with alaskayorkie and try to excersise her more. Puppies have TONS of energy they need to get rid of and a few walks a day might do the trick..make the longest walk your last walk...maybe she will crash out in her crate after that. Also try putting her in her crate just before you get into bed...if she hears you all having fun, talking, doing things..she probably just wants to see what you are doing...and if you dont want her in your bed...try the crate in your room..she is still a baby and probably just wants to make sure you are still around.. My furkids Donating Member | Did you just get her? When I brought Lillie home (she was 8 weeks old) she cried and whined for the first 4 nights...(Her crate is in our bedroom) I also got up with her, did the pee thing, gave her food etc....but, this was encouraging her behavior...I just left her to whine and kept telling her NO LILLIE!! GO TO SLEEP! after 5 nights of this she finally stopped...Maybe she's cold? try putting a heating pad under her blanket in her crate...and leave the crate covered...Maybe put her favorite toy in there with her... I'm sure this isn't going to be easy...especially where your hubby gets up early and your neighbors get upset.... Good Luck

| Maybe a play pen with the clothes she likes to sleep on would help, or here is a link to a heartbeat thingy... http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=B0002FZT0O

| I got her on 9/20/06 and she was a couple days shy of being 3 months old. She is now going on 5 months old. I would let her sleep with me if I could be 100% sure she would actually sleep and not be running around the house or in my room chewing everything in sight. She just wants to play 24/7 and its rough play. She will not just cuddle with anyone. she will lay on your lap for a few minutes and then she is nipping and gets all roudy again. if she is laying with someone she will jump all over you and start to bite like crazy. My 1 yr old sleeps with me and i couldnt have the dog jumping all over him while we are asleep. I actually think what the problem is that we let her roam around the house pretty much all day with exception of the bedrooms and sometimes living room. Then its time for bed and she wants to lay in the office on top of clothes and or on the couch. So when she gets crated i think she just gets mad cause she wants her way and be out doing what ever she wants. I definately cant let her stay out of the crate at all when not supervised. We tried a couple of times to leave her out of the crate while running a short errand and upon our arrival she has pieces of things all over the place that she either chewed up or shredded into pieces. Luckily its not furniture or walls etc and its only paper or clothes but still its not a good habit for her to keep doing. I came home one day to find her chewing my underwear. She has a fetish with socks which is why we named her socks and now with underwear. She is weird. She is so cute and we all love her to death but she is just way too fiesty and always wants her way. if she doesnt get her way forget it she goes crazy. She wont even eat her food if she thinks she can find something better on the floor that the baby dropped. Dont know only time will tell. thanks again everyone |

I think the barking at night might be just a side effect of not being walked enough. My puppy is only 4.5 months old, and if I don't walk her at least an hour per day, she can get pretty crazy too. Forcing the dog to walk next to you is a good bonding experience, as it shows your leadership, which makes the dog more relaxed. The mental challenge of matching your walking pace becomes another energy outlet for the dog as well. Whenever the dog walks perfectly next to you or slightly behind, make sure the leash is loose so the dog gets the idea that if it is patient and doesn't pull you, it will feel no tension from the harness. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggestion to leash pop the dog. But it's just having a little tension on the line when they are not walking next to you. The best way to burn off their energy is to set up play dates with other dogs. We have a neighbor with a yorkie, and when our two girls get together, they turn on the afterburners and sprint for hours on end. Last edited by P-did; 11-11-2006 at 11:05 AM.

| Ollie barked for a week straight in the cratre at night. Finally I took the door off of the crate and penned her in the laundry area. That did the trick. Everytime you take her back out of the crate when she is barking you are just reinforcing the problem. You would not give in to a child throwing a temper tantrum. ' What would you do if one of your cildren decided they wanted to sleep with you and threw a fit. Would you keep going to there bed and getting them up, or would you let them scream it out. |
