Hello,

Our Coco is giving us quite a challenge when it comes to doing her business outside. For a while we had her trained to where she would whine, and usually go to the bathroom right when you got outside. Now, she whines and barks constantly to go outside, but just wants to look around, sniff, and chase things.

Here's a common scenario: Get home after she's alone for 4 hours, let her out, keep her on a short leash so she knows it isn't play time. She doesn't do anything. After 15 minutes or so, go inside. About 30 seconds later she starts whining and barking, go outside, same routine, no pee or poop. Get back inside, whining, barking, FINALLY she goes pee. So I let her run around and reward her as she pees.

However, once back inside, she'll bark and actually ring her bell to go back outside. Over and over and over. It's to the point where we have NO clue whether it's to go play or go do her business!!

The dilemma: We don't want to ignore her whining and barking because we want her to let us know when she needs to go out. By the same token, we don't want to just let her outside everytime she wants to go just to sniff around and eat leaves and snow!!

It's as though she learned that she needs to let us know when she needs to go out, and it worked for a month or so... BUT, all of a sudden a lightbulb went on and she though "I can go outside WHENEVER I WANT"

Any suggestions??? We're getting somewhat tired of it. In fact, last night she was whining at about 4am and I took her out, because I knew she'd have to pee, and she stood around for 5 minutes before going! Previously, she'd want to go out, pee, and get right back in bed as it's pretty cold out at 4am in Minnesota!!

I'm sorry, I'm sure this isn't funny to you, but it sounds so cute and funny. I can just imagine her whining and wanting to go outside. I am trying to train my girl with the bell method and she's afraid of the bell. Have you tried puppy pads?

I agree. It sounds like she's outsmarted the system. I wish I had an answer or helpful tip. This is tooo cute. Thanks for sharing.

I have a run that I hook her up to. She does it enough but when she doesn't want to go out my other dog does and then she has to go out with her. I think Penny is looking for the little red squirrel that is always around my bird feeder which she can reach, but I think the squirrrel or something is living under a big bush by the feeder which she can't reach, so she barks at it. Anyway its hard to know if they really have to pee or not but you have to let them out just in case.

Fortunatly I have a fenced in back yard so Starsky can go out whenever. The problem is I don't have a doggy door and no way of putting one in. (strange door system, only french doors) Starsky is constantly going in and out. Barking because he wants out, no sooner do I shut the door and he wants back in. It's up and down from whatever I am doing. Plus he likes to chase my beagle around real early in the morning and he barks while doing this. I am sure my neighbors aren't happy to hear this on a saturday morning!! I hear your dilemma!

Have you thought about a wall mounted doggie door? My husband just installed one in my laundry room that goes out to a dog run. This way it is hidden out of sight and we didn't have to spend 300.00 on the ones that are used with sliding glass doors. I found mine on Ebay. Just a thought : )

we have already thought about putting this kind of door in, but my husband is not a handy man and doesn't want to cut into walls of the house. I would probably have to pay someone 300.00 to do it!! I keep asking my brother-n-law but his business is to busy for him to come do it. Send your husband over and he can help me put one in will ya!! He hah!

My husband said he would for 250.00 (he he he). We ironically do live in Colorado too! What a small world. Tell your husband it would save you both a lot of grief!!! Good Luck!

Wow, I am having the exact same problem. Only Sadie isn't completely housebroken and she will go out and mess around and then come back in and pee or poop. Yesterday my husband was home and he said she was outside more than she was inside. We have a yellow lab too and it got to the point where she didn't even want to go out with Sadie (and Maddie loves being outside).

We have started to bell train. We had bell trained Maddie when she was young, but then we ended up getting a new door and we never put the bells back up. We do have a fenced yard, which is really nice, but we have a hawk that flies around at times. So I am usually a little afraid of letting her out by herself.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be happy to hear too.
