| 3 month old puppy has never peed outside My puppy, Winston, seems to be smart and fairly willing to please -- nothing out of the ordinary. He was more or less paper trained by the breeder and we continued this for a while since he was only 8 weeks when he came home and I didn't want to risk him getting sick until he had more of his shots. Now we want to try to train him to go outside as well. (Yes, I realize that this isn't an optimal situation & it would have been better to bring him home a little older but he is a very healthy, relatively large & sturdy pup, and I have chronic health issues so I can't always take him outside. Since he's already learned to go on puppy pads, I don't want him to unlearn, just realize that it's "OK" -- more than ok really--to pee and poop outside on walks, etc.) I have tried different things to get him to realize that "going" outside is a good thing. He stubbornly waits until we get back in the house & goes to the puppy pads soon after. I have had limited success with him pooping outside so it's really the peeing part that's the biggest issue. I am wondering if anyone else has tried training their puppy to go outside after paper training and had this problem and what worked for them to get the light bulb to turn on. So far I have tried spraying the grass and sidewalk with the same housebreaking spray I use on the puppy pads and even put a puppy pad outside until it blew away. I can't give him a treat because he hasn't done it even once! I've tried both taking him to the same place in our small front lawn & for short walks. Maybe as he gets a little older he will want to mark his territory & that will help? Thanks in advance for any insight/advice you may have. Jennifer ( Sir Winston Pupchill, my first Yorkie!) |

| Constancy, Constancy, Constancy. Same time everyday, rain, hail, sleet, snow, hot, cold, humid, even if he comes in and does his business on the pee pad, pick a time in the early morning that is good for you and a time in the afternoon. Take him the same time everyday regardless of the weather. Dogs are creatures of habit. Even if he has already done his business just before the due time you were to take him out, take him anyway. He must know at a certain time he is going for his walk. Just have lots of patience and be consistent with the time, he will get it. Good luck.

| My Leiloni is a strictly indoor gal due to her tiny size. She was also pretty much paper trained when she came home at 10 weeks. When I took her out and actually let her down on the floor she wasn't quite sure what to do. She did eventually get used to it and would run and play but when it came to doing the do, she didn't feel comfortable unless I brought a pad with. So I started saying "go potty" every time she went. Eventually she caught on and even though she didn't have to go I would say the magic words and she would squat and tinkle a few drops. After she got that down we practiced it outside. She was a little skittish at first and would look up at me as if to say "but where is my pad mommy",,,, it was nothing a nice tasty treat couldn't cure the skittishness. Now she's very comfortable going outside and I don't even have to say "go potty anymore. She just goes when she has to.

| My lilah didn't go outside until she was around a year old- actually she peed and pooped and I was shocked and without a clean up bag! (I found a plastic bag in my car, don't worry). I had encouraged her to potty outside (we are also tiny pee pad dogs and very happy to be, not looking to change that just wanted to expand her horizons). Now she is a pro- and an outdoor marking queen to boot! I wouldn't worry about it unless your goal is outdoor training, it will come with time- maybe after winter is over.

| My mother in law has always had perfectly potty trained dogs. I did what she told me to do. First, I just kept taking him out every two hours. Her clever little poodles were trained within a week. My little guy who "has a long learning curve" took at least 3 weeks. When he did go in the house, I scooped him up and brought him outside and kept telling him "go potty outside." When he did, I made a huge deal of it. And I still do four years later. Next, I kept him in the kitchen until he was trained completely-no mistakes. I used boxes to keep him in there because the room was very open. Next, after he was "completely trained" for a couple of weeks, he did indeed start to make mistakes. Then I followed the advice I got on this forum- It was back into the kitchen until he stopped that. it was only two days and he got the message. (I did let him sit with DH and I on sofa in the evenings) It was hard work and frustrating at times to train Dinky, but he really, really go it. |
