My mother in law has always had perfectly potty trained dogs. I did what she told me to do.
First, I just kept taking him out every two hours. Her clever little poodles were trained within a week. My little guy who "has a long learning curve" took at least 3 weeks. When he did go in the house, I scooped him up and brought him outside and kept telling him "go potty outside."
When he did, I made a huge deal of it. And I still do four years later.
Next, I kept him in the kitchen until he was trained completely-no mistakes.
I used boxes to keep him in there because the room was very open.
Next, after he was "completely trained" for a couple of weeks, he did indeed start to make mistakes. Then I followed the advice I got on this forum- It was back into the kitchen until he stopped that. it was only two days and he got the message.
(I did let him sit with DH and I on sofa in the evenings)
It was hard work and frustrating at times to train Dinky, but he really, really go it. |
