| Simon's new name is Houdini! I need some help. When I leave for work I put Hallie and Simon in their condo area (pic attached) and I have been doing this for a year now so they are accustomed to it and have had no problems. A few months ago I fostered a cat (Wyatt) for the weekend who instantly became Simon's best friend and also taught Simon how to jump over the baby gate in the hallway. Simon continued to jump over the gate so I got a taller one. Then he decided it was easy to be a goat and climb up one side and jump over the other. All this time he NEVER jumped out of the condo (it's an exercise pen). And actually a few months ago I decided they could have the apartment and took down the condo, that didn't work, Simon freaked out when I left and didn't like it at all. Today I came home for lunch as I always do and Mr. Simon Sassy Pants was sitting in the hallway with his soccer ball in his mouth and poor Hallie was still in the condo b/c she's too little to jump out! SO I left them out this afternoon and when I got home Simon was pacing up and down the hallway whining and being mad at me. I'm afraid he will try to jump out again and break his little leg or get caught but when I leave him out he panics. Any recommendations? Thanks! |

| What a GREAT condo!!! You'd think Simon would NEVER want to leave it! Hmmmm, is there an extra bedroom or ?? that Simon and Hallie can have while you are gone? Simon might feel the entire home is too much space to "yorkie manage" while you are away and feel overwhelmed. But maybe if they had just one room Simon would feel more secure? I don't know....this is all just a guess.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I agree you can find a small area, like a bathroom or kitchen area and that would help or you can try and find a taller x pen, we have one and it is like 3 feet tall and then is no holes in it so they can climb over it....it works wonders, we got it Petsmart!!! Here is the link to it: X- Pen

| How about closing all the doors to the other rooms and letting them have run of the house that way. By the way love the condo don't know why he want's to leave. Yorkies got to love em.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I don't know why he'd want out...he's got a GREAT pad there! You need to find something, sheet, something to cover the top. That's the only thing I can come up with.

| I agree with Kimberley- if you could cover the condo area, I bet he would be happier. When we have company and I don't want KimMee out, I cover her crate and she doesn't make a peep. Obviously He is stressed out by having free run when you aren't home. |

| I know it is not nice to laugh but I have too. HEHEHEHe. Nice to see another one. Lucy when I first got her and she had just had surgery, up and over she went with a cone on her head and a bely full of stitches and me right there. My vet said if she had not pulled herself apart she was fine and confinement was over. Baby gates are for climbing or one jump and over and well just about everything else can be climbed too. She is in a large dogs kennel when I am not home and she is not at work with me. Like Saint Bernard size. She was a bed and toys and water and a lid to keep her in. I am in big trouble if she figures out how to open the door. I can with care get the baby gate to the cat box just high enough she can not jump and low enugh she can not go over. Joy |

| We stack 2 baby gates - one on top of the other - to keep Joey from climbing out when we aren't home. Alternately, they make covers for ex-pens, I believe.

| I am a dog lover not a cat lover. I actually have a fear of cats and their claws. I imagine you might possibly be regretting taking in the cat since he's the one that showed Simon "how" to jump the fence. My 10-1/2 year old Yorkie has never tried to jump the gate. Even when we put her in her plastic cage to go to bed at night, we only push the door to but do not lock it. She likes it so well in there that she's never tried to push the door open.

| bigger x-pen I would not advise the taller x-pen. My baby would just climb higher.....which means he has farther to fall or jump and more likely to get hurt! They do make covers for them. My local petmart didnt carry them, but you could order them throught the x-pen manufactuer. That is an option. I ended up having to just get a bigger crate for Miko though. He got out of everything or distroyed his area.....ripped pee pads, ate wall paper, tore up carpet or vinyl. I know his was anxiety though. |

| I don't know what to tell ya to help you, but I do understand how they get all anxious when they are left to roam, a couple times I let Bailey out of his crate while I went to get gas, etc and when I came back ( within 5 mins) he would still be sitting at the door barking. Then once I told my neighbor to watch him ( from outside) while I went to the drugstore,, I come home and she said " he went from the door to the window NON STOP barking!" So, I continue to crate him while I'm gone,, I thought it would be nice to let him roam and sleep on the couch, but I guess that was his way of saying, " I like my crate" WHO KNEW?!

| Hmmm... I wonder if Miko and Bailey really feel better in their crates or if the crate just keeps them from being destructive. If you're concerned that they're still anxious, you might talk to your vet. You might also investigate the "DAP Diffuser". It's like an air freshener that secrets calming dog pheromones. Haven't tried it myself but it's supposed to help dogs with anxiety. Vets here in England carry it and I've seen it at healthypets.com. It's possible that it's widely available in the States, I'm not sure.

| My Munchkin climbed out of her playpen when she was 4 months old and would be waiting for me by the door when I got home. So we tried the baby gates in the kitchen - she went over them. I was afraid to try the tall ones for fear she'd climb and jump and hurt herself. So we blocked off as much of the house as we could, and she had the run of the place at an early age. Granted, we were very careful and had baby-proofed everything so she wouldn't get hurt, but it worked for us.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | How about electrifying the xpen? KIDDING. I have no advice, but that condo looks nicer than my room! Oh, and Simon is Eddie's hero being able to escape like that!
