| From Pee Pads to Outdoors, Suggestions? Ok, so, as soon as we get our harness and leash, we are going to transition Maximus from pee pad training to strictly outside. I would appreciate any helpful suggestions or ideas to begin the process. Then, I will be joining the the YT Potty Log. I hope it isn't too late to retrain him. The whole pee pad thing just isn't working out for us.

What I've done so far is taken her out every 2-4 hours. I don't wake her up to go though. I know she can hold it through the night because she's never gotten up to pee in the middle of the night on the pads. So this is what I've done. 1)She wears a harness all the time, I take it off to brush though. 2)Every 2-4 hours I say, "Do you have to potty?!" and out we go, while she's on the leash. ( I want to start bell training her.) 3)I go to a part of my backyard and keep her fairly close. If you let them off leash their just going to think they are playing, at least she does. 4) I give her 10 minutes. Once we're out there I ask again "Do you have to potty" 5) I try not to say anything while she's sniffing around. 6) when she finally squats, I say "Go potty." "Good girl! Good potty" 7) we have a little party and she get's a treat, sometimes she denys the treat though ... she's a weird one. I've had her going outside before, but not all the time, I wasnt strict with it. When I first started I brought out a used pee pad a few times and this seemed to help a lot. The only problem we seem to be having is her actually pooping. This morning I knew she had to go but we had been out there for 10 minutes and she just layed down. I was going to take her back out in 5-10min. So I brought her inside, went to the bathroom for not even a minute, go back and she's pooped inside. When I'm away at school, she mostly sleeps and I never come home to any pee spots on the wee pads, so I'm hoping the schedule I have for her works! The longest I'm gone is about 5 1/2 hours on Monday's... so I plan to leave out a pad just in case! Good luck with Maximus! Think positive and be consistent. You have to train yourself to take him out.

| We took our puppies out all day yesterday to DC and our little boy Luk has no problems going outside but our girl Lexi will not. She will literally hold it until she gets in the house. We even take puppy pads with us and she would not go. We were out all day yesterday from about 8:30am to 6pm and she just wouldn't go. As soon as she came in the house she went right on the puppy pad. |

| My yorkies were outside pottiers. My male was a champ. Learned very quickly. Female (2nd)picked up by observation. They always went out at the same time. She moved from paper which she had started on at the breeders, to right outside when we got her. The trick was that I let her tinkle on a piece of newspaper and I took it outside. She started going on the paper outside right away. I didn't go out with them. Hooked them on leashes and closed the kitchen door ( They liked to go in private). The would go in about 30 seconds. That door and the lawn chains signified bathroom. Walks were different--that was for fun. Babysat an additional yorkie who was going to spend a few days that had never gone outside. Had her going "out" on the first try. all three at once. Never underestimate the power of imitation.

Senior Yorkie Talker | My 4 year old has been an outdoor dog for two years. Quite simply, you leave the pad down, take her out on schedule every few hours, and after awhile, the smells and action outdoors will deter her wanting to go at all indoors. I am convinced it takes 4 years to completely potty train a Yorkie...hehehehe. Now, Lilly will only go on her pad if weather will not permit otherwise. 1. Every few hours ask, "Do you want to go outside?" 2. Walk to the door and wait for the dog to come. 3. Place the leash on at the door. 4. Walk the animal until it goes potty. 5. Immediately give small treat and praise, i.e. "good girl went pee pee" or "good girl went poo poo." My dog will pee and poop on command now, which is very convenient when weather doesn't permit long walks. |

| I just wanted to update: We are still waiting for our leash and harness, but I realized we had a sweater that has a harness attachment on it, so we started early. He has done well for the most part. I stayed outside with him for a while this a.m., but he was way too interested in sights and sounds to concentrate on peeing and pooing. He came in and peed in the floor, I immediately took him outside. A little bit later, he went outside again, he peed, never pood, and when we finally came inside, he decided to poo. UGH! Oh well. I am torn whether to leave a pee pad in his x-pen or just clean it off the floor for accidents. At any rate, I'm working on it.

| 5 month old so terrified to go outside OK well i have a very strange one and if anyone has ever had this problem PLEASE let me know how you fixed it!! 5 month old male yorkie, we live in a condo and he has the pee pad thing down. after he got all his shots we started taking him outside with his big sister (3 year old yorkie). he is pretty small (only 3.5 lbs) so he was a little unsure at first of the whole going outside thing but caught on quick. All has been great since - until 2 weeks ago.....He is now SO scared to go outside and as soon as his harness goes on he starts shaking. i can't even get him to walk down the stairwell that he used to race his sister down. If i want him to walk i have to literally drag him down the sidewalk because he just puts the brakes on or lies in the grass. now he really won't even pee or poop outside. We have a park right accross the street so if we take him to the park he's fine and does his business, so it's not that he's now totally opposed to being outside at all. I have no idea what to do and this is just getting rediculous. Nothing happened to make him scared it was just like a switch was flipped all of a sudden. we have tried being over encouraging, doing the potty dance, treats etc. and nothing is working. HELP!!!! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | One more thing. I purchased a split leash for my two. The male, almost 9 months old, is the alpha male and definitely moved in to take over. Since he is the fresh air lover, he leads on the walk and will not tolerate the "putting on the brakes" behavior from the older female. The leash itself is single and splits in a "Y" formation at the end with enough length for them to walk together, but freely. She basically has to follow him. I think your pup will learn from the older Yorkie, and this just might work in your case. Good luck...Lisa |
