| What do I do now??? Help!! Hi,Megans babies are now 4 weeks and two days,Ive been told that I should completely take mum away from them and not allow them to feed from her anymore, they are eating puppy fod and drinking water but still feeding from Meg at the moment. I wanted to know what you all think before I do anything which sounds so drastic. Also, should I be giving them weetbix? Cows milk? What do I do now guys!!!! Oh,and is 6 weeks a good age to let them go to their new homes?? |

| I can't fully answer all your questions as I am still learning myself. I can tell you what I have learned and if I am wrong, someone please feel free to correct me. Usually when weaning puppies, once they are a certain age, right around when the start getting their baby teeth in, the mother dog will no longer let them nurse. At this time you should have them on a puppy mush, food mixed with water and heated up so it is warm. I have no idea what weetbix is but you should not give them cow milk when you are weaning them, they should be on their puppy food. Never give cow's milk in the first place, to puppies or adult dogs, it will upset their stomach and give them diararea (sp?). If you were to ever give them milk, it would either have to be a puppy formula from a store or goat's milk. And 6 weeks is Waaaayyyyy to young to let them leave for their new homes. They need to be ATLEAST 10 weeks old, 12 weeks is the best for them.

| This is what i know from reading, i am NOT a breeder so please don't jump on me! The mom will stop the pups from nursing, that's when you use a good quality puppy kibble, mixed with puppy milk formula. Make sure the food is the right temp. and introduce the new food to the pup. I would put the puppy kibble in a blender to crush and mix it with the puppy milk. I don't think you should take the mom away from the pups that drastically, but i might be wrong? NEVER ever let the pups go at 6 weeks, that is WAY to young. They should stay with mom till at least 12 weeks of age. She has a lot to teach them and they need to get socialized!!!!

| Oh no,one of the ladies who is having Sooty from us used to be a Yorkie breeder and is who we had Paddy from, she insists on giving puppies cows milk and gave them some yesterday. She says that pups should be fed weetbix (breakfast cerial) with milk, she no longer feeds her dogs dog food but cooks mince (frozen) for them and pasta, fish etc. She has helped me so much and has become a friend. This means she is a risk to the puppy she is going to have. How do I get round this one. So Im going to let Megan carry on till she is ready to stop feeding,so I just let nature take its course. Sounds good, they are eating pedigree chum puppy at the moment with a bowl of water. At least I got that right!!! Sorry Im rambling but this has got me worried. We got Paddy from this woman at 5 1/2 weeks. |

| Six weeks is way to young for the pups to go to their new homes. I got one at that age and he got stressed and got diahrea and dehydrated. Do the pups and the new owners a favor and keep the pups untill 12 weeks. They have also alot they learn from the Mother in that time also.

| You don't have to say anything to your friend, just tiptoe around it. Hopefully it won't be too much of an issue. And let me add, different people do different things and one way is not the end all be all. The only thing I really have a problem with is the age she's suggesting to let them go. Just tell her you can't bear to let them go right now, and you want the momma to decide when to wean...and momma will wean them! Leave out the softened kibble for them to "practice" on...it will all work out!

| My breeder weened her pups and supplemented their canned food with puppy milk. Puppy milk is a 12 oz. can of evaporated milk. 1 tbs. Karo, 1 tbs. Veg. oil and one raw egg. Gracie loved it. By 8 weeks, the vet said to start weaning her off of it because lactose intolerance would soon set in.

| Most puppies can be weaned by 8 wks. they are eating good by then and drinking. I feed a good puppy food, If they are not small puppies, they can go to their new homes after the 8 wks. but if they are small you are better off keeping them a couple more weeks. Don't ever feed cows milk, beside giving direhea,[spell]. it also does not have the nutrents that a puppy needs. you can starve a puppy to death , if you just feed cow milk to them. I use puppy milk replacer powder and wet it into liquid and pour over the puppy food, to get them started eating good.Dont forget your shots and wormings , that should have started at 2 wks. [worming].

| I didn't read all the replys, so if I am repeating something already said, I appologize. I never wean my pups from Mamma at 4 weeks. Supplementing mother's milk with another milk doesn't sound like a good idea to me if she is still producing. The natural way is better. She will let the pups know when they should be done weaning. Don't go cold turkey on weaning or the mamma may end up very sore or even worse. Pups should never go to new homes at 6 weeks. Some people think if they can eat on their own it is time to go. There are more reasons than nursing to keep them longer than that. |

| I never force wean, I let Mom make the choice. I remember that Megan is about 9 years old so if she is in good health and eating a quality food I would let her make the decision. If she looks haggard then you might start keeping her away from the babies for longer periods, but still wean them off slowly (better for Mom and babies). You should be supplementing the puppies at this age though. I put a quality puppy dry food in a food processor and turn it into a powder, add warm water to a soupy texture and serve. As they get older I gradually add less water. At about 6 weeks I also start leaving out dry, but continue to feed the moistened four times a day. My goal is to have them eating only dry before they leave me. Most recommend 12 weeks before leaving Mom, but I know that it is younger in other countries. No matter where you are from I think letting them leave before 10 weeks is very risky healthwise. What are they weighing now? Are they going to be bigger like Mom or more the size of Paddy? |
