I never force wean, I let Mom make the choice. I remember that Megan is about 9 years old so if she is in good health and eating a quality food I would let her make the decision. If she looks haggard then you might start keeping her away from the babies for longer periods, but still wean them off slowly (better for Mom and babies).
You should be supplementing the puppies at this age though. I put a quality puppy dry food in a food processor and turn it into a powder, add warm water to a soupy texture and serve. As they get older I gradually add less water. At about 6 weeks I also start leaving out dry, but continue to feed the moistened four times a day. My goal is to have them eating only dry before they leave me.
Most recommend 12 weeks before leaving Mom, but I know that it is younger in other countries. No matter where you are from I think letting them leave before 10 weeks is very risky healthwise. What are they weighing now? Are they going to be bigger like Mom or more the size of Paddy? |
