| Keeping puppies warm I would like some opinions on the best way to keep the pups warm. Keep the room warm, heating pad or heat lamp/bulb. Thank you |

| I keep the heat on during the day (in the winter) and, if it's going to be a SUPER COLD day, I put 2 heating pads under their bed (I put 2 because their bed is very long, so I want to make sure the whole bed is warm). Also, on those few and rare bitter cold days, I throw on a little shirt for extra warmth. My Maltese always shivers so he basically lives the whole winter in a sweatshirt.

When we had puppies, we had a kennel warmer. It was like an electric pad but it was made of hard plastic. The size was about 2X3 ft. and 1 inch thick. It's made for animals, so its safe from animals chewing on it. I would put it under their blanket, so the warm came through nicely. Got it at Petsmart.

| I use a heated fleece lined flexi-Mat and on really cold nights I might use an heat pad too, I stop using them at about 4 weeks by then they can hold their own heat. Make sure there are no drafts in the room. http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store....15463c71c914f4 hope this helps

| I used a heating pad on the low setting under a towel, didn't want to heat them up too much!

This is a rough time of year to have puppies due to the Air conditioning. Make sure that your puppies do nat have an air conditioning vent close that can cause them to get chilled. I use heating pads- that are covered with a well worn baby blanket , pillow case or shhepskin. I play with all three to see which one my mom prefers. Laying for that length of time can be hard on the mom and the vet feels that the sheepskin gives her support on her hips and that the heating pad underneath helps with keeping the babies warm. I have never heard good things about using a heating lamp. I have always been told that it gets mom and the babies too hot. You will be able to tell if mom is too hot cause she will pant ( like a on a very hot day outside) and not want to stay in the box. What do you have set up for mom to have the babies in? I'm not sure we in Maine have to worry a whole lot about babies in the summer.. Most of us do not use air conditioners... It never gets that hot and on the freak chance it does.. it never lasts to long.. | |

| Here where I am in CA it has been overcast lately and my house stays cool most of the time anyway. My whelping box is so thick on the bottom I am afraid the heat would not go through. I will try to heating pads on low and check the heat constantly. Thank you all so much. |

| Heat If you have it too thick it is hard to get the heat to the puppies. Once mom gets too warm she will make a mess out of the bed trying to cool herself down. As the saying goes if Mama ain't happy no one is happy. It is a fine line with babies- you can't have then too hot and you can't have them too cool. My hubby causes me a lot of problems cause he likes the house darn cold during the summer- I have to check any puppies I have closely to make sure that they are being kept warm and not getting cold. wnalegria |

| I do, use heat lamps. I have a PVC pipe attached to the crate and the heat lamp clamped to the pole. I put an outdoor thermonitor on the bottom of the crate and adjust the position of the lamp until I get the temperature I want. With heatpads the moms want to chew on them and fluff them up and sometimes the heat pad will be on top of the puppies. |

| Keeping Puppies Warm As you can tell by now, we all have our own way of keeping the kids warm. Is on way right over the other- nope. You have to look at the situation and see what you have to work with, what you are comfortable with , and what you think will work for you. You have been gave a lot of excellent ideas and ways that others take care of thier babies. Good luck in getting everything together for Yorkie Stork. |
