| help Hello, I'm new to the group, but my female Sophie is going to have babies. I took her to the vet for her two year shots....I believe she will be delivering around april 1st. Is there anything i should watch for as far as her delivering....i mean any signs that would signal me to rush her to the animal hospital? She weighs 8.6 lbs right now, but her little belly has just started to pop out to where it's visible that she is pregnant. Vet said to exercise her so her stomach muscles get strong and to feed her puppy food until she's done nursing.....any other advice you might be able to share with me? Thanks so much !!! yorkiemomma7 |

| Thanks for the input Yes, Sophie did get her shots. I don't think that the vet would have given them to her if he felt they would harm her while she's pregnant. I did contact another vet who is closer to where i live. I asked him if he would be able to assist me if she started having any complications and he agreed...so that takes some pressure off of my mind...lol. I'm sure she'll do fine, but i have researched preganancies of yorkies and there are so many things that could go wrong..like the eclampsia, and so on....she isn't a miniature, maybe that will help her to do better...who knows, i have faith in her and that she won't have any problems. yorkiemomma7 |

| We are still struggling with the weight gain (3.4 oz this morning) I am supplementing the puppy every 2-3 hours. Before I start I let it nurse on mom. Baby is doing better latching on but now I am concerned about Vicky loosing milk. I don?t know why? Is it because the puppy is not nursing a lot? What can I do to make sure she has enough for the baby when it finally will go on its own?I hope?

| Hi, I just saw your thread and thought I would check on your baby. How often is she latching on to mom now? If you are worried about mommy not having enough milk be sure to keep putting the pup on her every hour or 2. The more the puppy sucks the more it will stimulate her to make more. Also, are you putting her on different teats? With just one puppy you need to be sure to rotate teats to promote them to make more milk. Most puppies at least double their weight in the first week but as long as the vet thinks she is fine and she isn't losing that is the important thing. Keep us posted and try to get a little sleep! I know that first week is a killer but it will get better. BTW Vicky is just beautiful! Such a sweet face.

| Pinch the puppy's skin above her shoulders. If it stays in a "tent" shape, then she is dehydrated and needs to see the vet right away. If you need to talk, you can PM me your phone number or ask for mine. I'll help with anything I can. |

| Oh I was hoping for better news... When Lilly had Scout I was so much more at easy because Scout was gaining every day. She is 7 weeks now and she has had a few days she stayed the same... but never lost. Almost everyday she gained though = ( I'm praying she starts to eat more and gain.

| I don't think the baby needs tube feeding since I have no problem feeding it through syringe. My vet and the ER vet didn?t recommend it as well. It gets 3 to 4 CC of the Esbilac formula every 2 to 3 hours. I also let it nurse on Vicky before feeding and give some nutrical. Baby is not dehydrated. I know how to check since it happened last weekend and I rushed to ER. I just don?t know why it gains so little. It is very active puppy, racing all over the box and mommy. I am very frustrated but not giving up. Is there anything else I should use instead Esibilac? Maybe some home made formulas to help the baby grow? I am using powder formula mixing 2 tbs of water with 1 tbs of powder per directions on the can. Thank you for your suggestions.

| I commend you for the great job you are doing. It takes a lot of love, time and patience. I am glad to hear how active the pup is. I just can't figure out why she isn't gaining weight. There have been several threads on here with members hand feeding their puppies. Maybe start a new thread in the Breeders section and the Nursery section asking for experienced help with getting an infant puppy to gain weight. You know I wish you the very best. Have you named her? She is a little fighter, that's for sure. |
